It seem Chris Evans will be broadcasting from the Olympic Park 7-10am when the Olympics start. The first day 27th July will be as normal ( 6.30 -9.30 ) Then from Monday 30th July Claudia Winkleman is sitting in for Ken Bruce from 10-12.

Then from 10pm-Midnight Zoe Ball and Richard Bacon Go For Gold show will broadcast Monday - Friday.. Sara Cox is covering Janice Long also.

I don't understand why the regular presenters are being moved because of the Olympics......its sport......what has that to do with Radio 2? Confused

The whole thing is just crazy, they should leave the schedule alone. I'll just switch off completely as I've started doing whenever there is an Olympic topic of any kind.

How about a sense of perspective here?

This is the first time in over 60 years that Britain is hosting the Olympics. What's more, Team GB have a pretty good chance of getting plenty of medals. Radio 2 isn't likely to be broadcasting wall to wall commentary like Five Live - but there will be a sense of occasion on the scale of the jubilee.

It's two weeks out of 60+ years. I'm sure the audience will cope.

Mark in case you have forgotten, Radio 2 is a music station not a sports one. If you want sport switch to one that does sport. Just because some idiot decided it would be a good idea to hold the games in London doesn't mean the rest of the nation has to rejoice.

There has been a 'sports desk' on Radio 2 for as long as it's been in existence. I suspect it was there in the days of The Light Programme too. I'd be more inclined to listen to 5 live (which, it seems, dips it's toe into other fields aside from it's main topic - sport) if it means I don't get any of Evans' squawking!

No problems with perspective from where I'm sitting. Like Helen says, Radio Two is primarily a "music and chat" station whose programme programming brief is actually quite wide and varied.

The BBC itself went down the road of dedicating channels to specific areas of programming, ethnic audiences, etc., a good few years ago. That's why we have the News channel, Parliament, BBC Three and Four, Radio Five Live, 6 Music, The Asian Channel, etc etc.

And that's why many Radio 2 listeners don't want a saturation of programming focused on the Olympics, either. Except news of Tom Daley's achievements. But in that respect I am biased.

Mark I'm well aware that some events are held outside of London, some close to me, but the Games themselves were awarded to the city of London and are known as such.

Helen, I think Mark has missed one vital clue that's hidden in the title - it's the "London 2012" games.

That's right. There will be football games in Coventry but the large purple banners hanging off the ring road say 'London 2012' which officially is what the event is.

Another very good reason to listen to other things then!

Rubbish. I would guess that what the majority of people dislike is change for change's sake - and the Radio 2 controller has a definite skill in that area.

I don't mind outside broadcasting. I used to enjoy it when Richard Allinson broadcasted live from festivals such as Fleadh and Guildfest on his old, much missed, saturday afternoon show, when Radio 2 were involved with them. I was at Guildfest a couple of times when Radio 2 was there. I never saw Richard Allinson (both times he was tucked away in the caravan), but I did see Bob Harris, Janice Long & Sally 'Traffic' Boazman did a bit of stage compereing too. Also Chris Hawkins (of 6 music) Other outside broadcasts I still fondly remember are when Richard Allinson did a show from a Yorkshire shopping centre and webcast it, you could watch it as well as hear it, then, on another occasion his show came from the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, that was similarly webcast. And another from a seaside resort (I forget where now - I think it was in the northern half of the country) where a seaside airshow was on, it was all going 'tickety boo' until an F16 did it's display and it seemed to drown him out! (Thinks:- I wonder if one would drown out Evans!! Maybe that would take an F18 or Eurofighter Typhoon!) As I recall, you couldn't watch that one. Another I enjoyed was when Radio 2 had a week in Newcastle (around 2003 I think it was) I think Janice Long also did some live broadcasts then. Those were the days, and I really miss them! Whilst Guildfest is certainly still going, does anyone know if Fleadh is still held at Finsbury Park?
I am not anti Olympics, I like the idea of something big like the Olympics happening in my lifetime in my own country, I suspect it'll only happen the once during my life. Being only 5 years old at the time, I don't have a lot of memory of the 1966 world cup. This'll be the second olympics that my father will see. However, I won't listen to any of Radio 2s coverage if it means I get shouted at by Evans. That's one bloke who gives me a thumping headache!

Me too. What I don't get is why Radio 2's "star turn" (heaven help us all) has to be rolled into each and every R2 event regardless of how relevant his presence is. And all he does is show off as usual.

It's not wall to wall sport coverage. Just a few shows which are concentrating on the event. Can't pretend this once in a life time event is happening. Most of us probably won't see it again in our life time.

If it's a 'once in a lifetime' event I feel I'm just very unlucky having to put up with it happening in my lifetime

I was rather hoping I could have missed it and then I would have been a whole lot happier Smile

So according to MarkO, Evans will be on 7 days a week. I knew this would happen eventually. Can't be long before he's on 24/7. Abandon all hope!

The new jingle package is only the first stage of a complete re-branding of the station. It will eventually be called "Evans FM" (after being privatised by the Culture Secretary whether the BBC Trust likes it or not), and there will be a choir singing all over the new musical idents with the chorus "Thank Evans for Chris". And lo and behold, those once loyal listeners to Radio 2 will have gone mad.

There's a two page spread about Tom this week in the Radio Times. I watched the programme about him and his family a while back and he and his Dad seemed very close ...he says in the article that he is diving for his dad.

Athletes from all sports work so hard and we only see them for a few minutes (usually) in their chosen field so it is easy to not think of all the hard work they put in day after day to achieve the results they do,be it first or last.

I wish Tom and all the athletes the very best and will be cheering lots of them on.

There must be quite a large percentage of the population, and therefore of R2's audience, with absolutely no interest whatsoever in the games, or indeed any other sport.

I was also hoping to find a refuge from the whole affair by avoiding TV and the papers, obviously not that easy if the BBC are going to be contaminating R2 with excessive coverage.

But are there really so many people that aren't interested in any of the vast range of sports which are included in the Games? To me it seems that not enjoying any sport is the equivalent of not being interested in any books or music or art or drama, which comes very near to having a closed mind.

I'm not really into sport at all, but I do like the sense of occasion that the Olympics brings to the country. I also like the fact that British businesses will make money out of it.....

.......like mine!

Thank you BBC. Smile

PS: Please support my second cousin Tom Daley, everyone. He's worked for years to get to this championship and if he grabs gold then it will be richly deserved - not just for him but his whole family and all those who've given so much to his development.

We'll be sending him a text message to him on the night before the big one. Sorry Ruddles - but text is quite an appropriate form of communication in this context!!!! Smile

Well I take a close interest in numerous sports including Football, Rugby League, Snooker, Darts. Tennis and Golf but I just cannot abide the Olympics and all the hype that goes with it

There's a big difference between real competitive sport and a bunch of amateurs having their 15 minutes of fame backed by their sponsors looking to capitalise on the situation and save themselves quite a significant amount of tax in the process most of whom will never be heard of again once this irritating spectacle is over

Roll on the new football season I say and I don't usually say that in July but I do wish Tom and all the other competitors well Smile

Well I'm one who has no interest in the Olympics at all. I don't like much like sport at all these days but I do enjoy tennis but probably won't see much of this event.

Like Blackcloud I was hoping R2 would pretty much be an Olympic free zone, apart from news bulletins and the few bits elsewhere, but it's not to be sadly. I'm just glad to have my internet radio and will only listen to R2 if I know what is going to be on.

Desmond's programme for this coming Friday....looks as if he might be of the same mind as you and others, Helen.

Desmond shares good tunes, some unexpected ones and a few you may never have heard before. This week he sorts through his personal record collection of some 250,000 titles for songs and music related to the theme "Not the Olympics". It's an alternative sportsday set to music.

My second-cousin Tom isn't one of the "bunch of amateurs" and he certainly isn't looking for "15 minutes of fame". So how would you classify his involvement?

What - a bunch of egotistical prima-donnas who ponce about on a football field once a week, occasionally (but more often not) managing to put a ball between those posts at the other end of the grass, and are paid way too much for the little they contribute to society in general. They "work" for football clubs who, in turn, are effectively owned by Rupert Murdoch and the Sky organisation (because without Sky's massive injection of cash there's no Premiership football to speak of and the |players" might otherwise have to get proper jobs).

The only football I rate is that which is played by the kids on playing fields near me on a Sunday morning. More goals are scored, that's for sure.

Completely agree Colin. Much as I hate the corporate greed of half of the sponsors the Olympians are sportsmen. Football isn't a sport, it's a business, there's nothing sporting about it

She who must be obeyed has already pencilled in the diving as one of the few events she wants to see
