Santa is right. But banality can come in the form of letters or postcards, or even good old-fashioned telephone calls as well.

As I've said in the other thread it isn't the technology that's at fault, it's how one chooses to use it. If it were any different then perhaps we should put a ban on the invention of all new technologies?

Vanessa had a fab thread this morning about puppets.... I so wanted to text-in with my fav puppet, Spit the Dog - sadly I've not used my mobile for so long it had died in my handbag- it's taken about 4 hours of being plugged into the mains to bring it around.

Alex has a thread about phases this week- when I first heard it, I thought he said "phasers"....... set to stun etc......I go through phases.... we all do. Smile

This morning Vanessa was asking, which of your Icons would you like to share a Victoria Sponge with? I conveyed the question to hubby.... he said, you, cos you're my Icon- he went on to say that he would let me have it all. Awwwwwwww..... "Oh no,now I have guilt." Which film?

I actually once met a woman called Victoria Sponge - she was originally Victoria Hill but she married a 'Sponge' Smile

What do you do if you can't sleep, Vanessa asked this morning. Not a problem for me, my problem is staying awake, as soon as I'm anything less than vertical - I'm asleep. But for others I guess if you cannot get to sleep, a quick read of one or two of my posts should have them in a state of unconscious bliss before they get to the end of....ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

Vanessa could have answered her own question - the answer being "Just listen to me for 10 minutes"!!!

From a Victoria Sponge to sleeping disorder. What Next? Too much eating could keep you awake.

It's counterbalanced by the fact that Vanessa's show is a certain cure for insomnia though!

I don't know about keeping you awake, Mark. Last night it was PNaB night for us ( Posh Nosh and Beer Night) ( it helps to keep the love alive)( I don't have beer, that's just for hubby) for pudding we had double Chocolate Cheescake with clotted cream, sprinkled with shavings of Willie's Chocolate Factory Peruvian Dark Cacao: this morning I have the Mother and Father of all chocolate hangovers. ...

On a different subject, earlier in the year on a PNaB night when my mum was staying with us, I'd bought Hubby some Banana Beer , it was the first time I'd bought it and I've not seen it in the supermarket since - anyway my mum has told anyone and everyone who will listen in a gossipy kind of way.... "you know, our Rachel's husband drinks Banana Beer" Everyone I talk to now- goes on and on about banana beer! It was just once!!! Another time he had chocolate beer but mostly he has Hobgoblin.

He is, I don't deserve him really. To make matters worse, I've just scratched his car in a multistorey carpark- why do they put those concrete posts so close to where you need to park?

Ooops! Yes, you're right. Our Sainbury's underground carpark is a bit like that. Once, last year, we were picking up a hire car at Malaga airport and an old bloke was driving out of a bay in his hire car but turned right before actually clearing the space - and a concrete pillar. He hadn't driven more than two metres before the whole of the right side of the car was mangled!

My wife gets me to reverse into tight car parking spaces - or at least she used to. Two days after taking possession of my Alhambra 3 years ago I reversed into a low bollard in a car park (no parking sensors - big omission). Not much damage done (thankfully) but a serious dent to my hunky, macho image nonetheless!!! Smile

I'll tell him now that it's fixed, Colin. I hate it when I borrow something and break it, the funny thing is, I asked if I could use his car today because I find it really quite difficult to get my 4x4 into the Waitrose underground carpark- it fits but only just. Don't give me the lecture on shopping in 4 X 4s. It's actually more efficient than my old Ka. Usually I park next to the disabled space - cos there's a bit more room there but the smug guy in the Bentley got there before me this week... usually I beat him to it- which really annoys him cos it's the only space he can his Bentley in- so we have this, who can get there first competition every week. When I had my old Ka , he would go bonkers if I got there first - so now I just do it to annoy him. He's a nice chap really. There is another space he can get in but on a different floor.

In other news the Howden's kitchen Rep has been - panic over- they will sort it all out for us.

Now back to Vanessa's show.....

Maybe. Smile Although I don't really write into shows anymore like I used to. It was almost a fulltime job, I certainly put that much effort into it anyway. Just the odd text now and again is all I venture these days. In many ways writing to radio shows on a regular basis, is a lot like being eaten by a shark, they eat the bits they like, spit out the bits they don't , ignore you when they're not hungry and then leave your shredded corpse to the crabs. That's showbiz!

I thought you drove some kind of fancy Ford Ka Rach - or is that now past history - and if so ask yourself do you really need a 4 by 4

Personally I think such vehicles are a liability unless you're in farming or live in a very remote area and really need one Smile

The SportKa went when Hooby, our dog, arrived. Dorset is quite rural, Rudds, and remote in places. Do we need a 4x4? What we need is a car that will do over 50mpg ... the 4x4 does that, my SportKa did 34-ish on a good day... we need a car that can easily carry our dog in his car cage thing, the 4x4 does it easily, my SportKa couldn't do that, we need a car that is capable of getting around in country lanes covered in snow, the 4x4 will, we hope do that, my Sportka had trouble on just wet roads. We could have had a Volvo Estate or a Subaru Estate or maybe even an MPV but the 4 x 4 we bought is more robust, more efficient and really quite nice to drive.

Since the lost post here was over 6 months ago it would seem that none of us listen to her any more or have just accepted the dross served up. I woke up to her this morning (by accident), and could not believe how bad it is - car crash radio.
Some music, trailers for other shows, and dominated by reading texts/tweets or whatever on "what do you use ginger for?", all delivered in an over the top gushiness - I'm sure there's no such word but it does the job, unlike this dreadful presenter. How does she get away with it? Or is it just me.

It's not just you.
Gushiness abounds.
To be fair, I find Vanessa is better when she's covering for Jeremy and by virtue of the show format is actually provided with something to talk about, rather than make stuff up.

It's pretty much the same gripe I have with Zoe Ball (bless her), who is in line to represent Britain (bless her) at the next world gushing championships.

Maybe it's about wanting to be liked?

I knew I wasn't 't alone. On the odd occasion when I've heard her in that slot she does seem more at ease although I still struggle to see what she adds to the listening experience.

The comparison with Zoe Ball is apt - can we be sure they aren't the same person? There is a hint of desperation to both of them, never seemingly relaxed in their delivery. Maybe they can't believe their luck, and are just permanently on edge waiting for the day they are found out? Can't come soon enough.

To my horror Zoe Ball turned up on 5live last week subbing for Richard Bacon - kids tv comes to radio.

I suppose it's a sign of the quality (at least in my opinion) of the Vanessa Feltz programme that I have only heard bits of it on a couple of occasions I didn't think that Sarah Kennedy was brilliant but at least I listened to her regularly, annoying as she was at times.

I'm obviously in the minority but I can put up with Zoe Ball in small doses.

Now we're straying into Evans territory, that's my idea of kids tv coming to radio, having had the extreme misfortune of hearing Evans recently. Zoe is far preferable in my opinion. For starters, paracetamol isn't required afterwards! When Vanessa Feltz first took over from Sarah Kennedy, out of fairness, I did try her show out. But it isn't really for me. I did prefer Sarah Kennedy's show.
