Richard Bacon and Zoe Ball co-presenting an Olympic show on Radio 2. No doubt this nightmarish duo appeal to someone, but combining two of the most vacuous, babbling, empty-headed and talentless presenters I have had the misfortune to encounter must justify the question, what numbskull thought this was a good idea? |

I think the answer is the same numbskull who has recruited the increasing number of idiots who present Radio 2 shows these days - it's a long list! |

I thought the title was talking about the 2000 film - Where unusually intense storm pattern catches some commercial fishermen unaware and puts them in mortal danger. Hope the listeners will be ok

Very interesting Mark - by the way did I hear your name mentioned on The Golden Hour on Smooth this morning? - seems you got the year right so well done _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

The Golden Hour is excellent Colin - even if you don't listen to anything else on the station for me there's only Simon Bates who can present that type of show however cheesy some people might think he is _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I promise myself that I will give Smooth a listen in the mornings. Anything is better than the gay disco pop dross that Ken Bruce and 'producer' Gary Bones inflict upon us, though I am put off by the name. 'Smooth' implies the usual banal drivel that dreadful stations like Heart play. |

He's so cheesy though he's good because there's very little cheese about these days so it's different - cheese has been replaced with something even worse - self obsessed presenters - especially on Radio 2 _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

On that point I agree. I think I'd rather endure Bates' cheese for a couple of hours than 2 minutes of Evans' variety! That said, I really don't like these commercial network radio "brands" - they're all too corporate and not independent enough for my liking. |

I do agree Colin but if you like shows like SOTS and POTP on Radio 2 I can't see how you would not like The Golden Hour as it's very similar except with news stories from the years in question - admittedly the adverts are quite irritating - I'd much prefer to see the thing on Radio 2 _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

The whole on-air presentation style of these "branded" network stations is awful, and that's what I dislike. I also hate the commercials, of course.
I can guarantee that most of the music featured in the Golden Hour will be held in my iTunes library so I can always make up my own playlists and not have to put up with cheesy presenters, annoying commercials and endless on-air promos. |

That's probably very true Colin - but the fact remains as to whether you will ever have the time or take the trouble to do it
Why bother anyway when the format is available on your radio five days a week - the only downside being the adverts _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I actually do it all the time because my iTunes library is accessible throughout my house and even in my office. And it's very easy to do. If I have my feet up in the living room, I simply call up my iTunes library via my phone or iPad and send the output to my stereo audio system. If I'm in the kitchen or the garden, I still have the same ease of access. I really don't want old-fashioned cheesy radio to get in the way of that. However, I do still like listening to presenter-led programming like POTPs, SOTS and Johnnie Walker's SOT70s largely because I value the input of the presenters in each case.

Because no source of radio broadcasting is doing it in a way that suits me. Thanks to today's wonderful technology I have a much wider choice. |

I don't have the vast array of high tech gizmos or knowledge of them Colin has, but I wouldn't want to listen to the music on my Ipod too much as I'd find it slightly boring.. knowing what was coming next to a certain extent - even on shuffle.
That's not to say my Ipod music is dull, it certainly isn't. I like the surprise element and variation of live radio with a decent presenter of course.
Like many on here, I find a lot of daytime Radio 2 dull and that's what I like about my wonderful Internet radio.
KYA San Francisco is great for me for example as it plays 50s, 60s and 70s music with hardly any adverts or droning presenters.
Plus of course, I can listen again to SOTs and PotPs when it suits me! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
I have heard how radio should be.

Going back to the original topic of the thread I just don't get the point of the Ball & Bacon show. It's not really about the Olympics, it has no distinct musical agenda, and is just two self-obsessed people wittering on about each other for two hours.
Evans and Mayo have done a good job interacting with the Olympics but why the schedules had to be torn up for these two, I have no idea. |

For me, R2 is a complete no-go zone this week. I don't begrudge the station locking in to the Olympics activities at all (the station would be criticised if it didn't make it a big occasion, let's be honest) but I'm just not interested in all the waffle coming from presenters (no names) and myriad of celebrity guests.
I think the BBC is doing a very good job with the whole event (it's the biggest single OB and multi-venue presentation job it's ever done - and all credit to the folks involved in TV and Radio, most of whom are now external contractors, facilities providers and freelancers, who really are working their arses off) but I'm only really interested in seeing certain sporting events. All this "Oooh we're all here having a wonderful party at Radio 2's expense while the plebs sit at home and listen enviously" nonsense. |

Well I quite frequently indulge in a spot of Welsh Rarebit for breakfast as I take the view that there's nothing wrong with having a bit of cheese at that time of day _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I hear (belatedly) that GMG (the owner of Smooth) has been bought out by Global, the owner of Gold, Heart Real etc.
So has to wonder as to the future of Smooth and indeed Simon Bates at breakfast. Is there is a conspiracy to ensure that everyone listens to Evans?!
The official line is that there will be no change, but I recall the same being said when Classic Gold merged with Capital Gold, still miss Classic Gold.
Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. |

Most of those stations already have shows similar to 'The Golden Hour' at 9am but not done anything like as well as Simon Bates does that particular thing
I reckon you might see his show broadscast on the other networks within the new group but I think whenever there is change of this kind it inevitably gives people lots of cause for concern _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Probably not, but there's definitely a conspiracy to ensure a limitation of listener choice - hence my post relating to OfCom's open invitation to us to submit our views on another thread I opened. |
