I've just heard that Bob Hoskins is to retire from acting as a result of his having been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. What a shame. I first met him when I was a student working on some learning materials linked to the BBC's Adult Literacy Education programme "On The Move" in which he starred with a young Neil Morrisey.

He was fabulous to work with, and I was pleased for him when I next saw him on TV - in Dennis Potter's wonderful 1978 BBC TV series "Pennies From Heaven". His real triumph, of course, was in the lovely British film "Mona Lisa".

Here's the BBC story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-19176729

I've had to be careful not to refer to him in the past tense!

Very sad news. He's appeared in some fantastic films over the years.

Before I read this thread I thought he'd done something disastrous on the Parky show - rather like Oliver Reed Laughing

Seriously though it is a very debilitating condition - my mother suffered from it for around 15 years before she passed away in 1995 Sad

You see the problem is Colin that you put an apostrophe where it was not appropriate - naughty boy Smile

I'm surprised you haven't already had Shaky Fan on your case

For that I would expect you to get three strokes of the cane plus two hundred lines 'I must not misuse the apostrophe' together with at least two weeks detention - not to mention saying at leasrt three 'Hail Marys' now I'm just thinking should I have put an apostrophe in 'weeks or Marys for that matter' - at this time of night frankly I don't really care Smile

Ruddles, I'm keen on apostrophes and in support of Colin's thread title it's a tricky one and possibly acceptable. There is a private school in my area and I have always been disturbed that it's called St Nicholas' School with the apostrophe in that place. I tell myself that the Governors must have checked very carefully before letting it stand.

Perhaps I should consult Lynne Truss on that one Smile.

Well, that's probably because I have assumed that it is "Parkinson's Disease" (referring to a singular "Parkinson"). If that is the case, then my apostrophe was correctly placed. If, instead, it is "Parkinsons" (plural) then it will be misplaced and will require an apostrophe after the letter "s".

So what is it to be?

Note that the apostrophe as applied to the name "Hoskins" is correctly placed, which proves that I understand the rule - does it not?

I think you will find it's a generic description Colin - the disease isn't personal to anyone by the name of Parkinson - I guess he's probably the person who first discovered the science of it

Getting back to Eileen's point it used to irritate me that Waterstones used to use an apostrophe but put it in different places on signs on different shops

I once queried this with them and they honestly admitted they hadn't got a clue which was the correct spelling Smile

In that case I assume that the name as appears on the Companies House register is the proper one.

Sorry to hear about Bob Hoskins, he always comes across as a decent fella and he's a great actor.
He's been in so many excellent films but I particuarly I liked him in Mrs Henderson presents with Judi Dench.

Me too, Toggy. I'm fond of that film and loved the music so I bought the CD.

'Pennies From Heaven' was my favourite TV series ever. Lovely plot, great acting, and a fabulous 1930s soundtrack.
