I never stop listening, even to the shows I like the least. You can't have a valid opinion on something if you don't know how it ticks.

I have replied positively to LP's question. He asked a question a question and I answered it by saying that Radio 2's output is mostly rubbish these days. That's an observation - brutal (as Rachel would say) but honest. Radio 2 take note. It's our BBC after all.

But Mark, this isn't actually a forum JUST for Radio 2 listeners, it's the Radio 2 Preservation Society, so it's for those who would wish to preserve or bring back the more traditional schedule that WAS Radio 2, with a better spectrum of music and entertainment shows.

I've listened to Breakfast, Ken Bruce and Drivetime and part of the shows that follow it each evening.

I'm listening to Ken Bruce in my office right now. I don't usually leave home until 9.30am which is convenient since the car radio kicks in just after the irritating Evans finishes. At the moment, of course, Ryan wotisname will be on up until that moment but as I'm out of the habit of listening to the station pre-9.30am I don't get to hear him or even to Dickie Dawn before him.

Normally, I'll switch off when the wicked witch comes on at 12.00, and at one I'll normally listen to Radio 4's The World at One, where the handling of news and current affairs is less tabloid or banal than is the case with the Vine/Feltz offering.

I could, of course, opt to stream the many, many online sources of listening that are infinitely better than today's radio 2 but unfortunately my agreement with my serviced office landlord is that I pay a premium for excess bandwidth usage, so that effectively limits my choice of radio to the unbelievably narrow range of listening options available on FM.

There. Is that the kind of answer you'd prefer, Mark? Jolly good.

I've listened to quite a lot of Radio 2 in the last few weeks - the Olympic coverage has been great, and I like a few of the playlisted songs.

Apart from Evans and Mayo (who I've enjoyed immensely) I've listened to Ken, tolerated Jeremy (but not Vanessa) and was happy to discover Fiona Phillips is no longer on with Ryan.

I'm still mostly with 5Live in afternoons though, except for the occasional Prom on Radio 3 and Ray Davies with Mark Radcliffe on 6Music yesterday.

Evenings are trickier - because I've been doing a lot of driving, the specialist shows haven't really worked for me lately. Fridays are fab, but some of the documentaries have been a bit obscure. That said, the Ball & Bacon show was poor but better than local commercial offerings.

But despite all this listening, can't say there's much that excites me about the station though.

Dammit I forgot about it - even though Davies really is doing the promotional rounds this week. I'll have to catch up on iPlayer. 6Music is proving to be a much bigger attraction to me these days - I must get me a DAB unit for the office.

Is "traditional schedule" the right phrase there, John? Tradition is something that goes back years and years, generations even, radio schedules are and always have been a moving target, an evolutionary process- an ongoing, suck it and see broadcasting experiment. The only tradition in broadcasting is continuous change, updates to listening platforms, broadcasting techniques etc.... although I think I know what you mean. There is a danger that looking back at how it used to be on 2 is heavily sprinkled with good personal memories from that era, making it seem like 2 was better the way it was way back when you got your first real six string: a more civilised listening experience from a far more civilised age but we are where are now, which is the only reality we have. A snapshot in time makes an interesting jigsaw but look at the same scene today, you'll find it's not just radio 2 that has changed, it's every single piece of the puzzle, including us.

I agree with Rachel in that all media evolves as society evolves culturally and otherwise. Personally, I wouldn't listen to R2 if it resembled the R2 of - say - 20 years ago. That said, I do like diversity and I don't see there being as much of that these days on R2. I've always liked the niche, specialist programming on both radio and TV and it seems that such programming is a risk not worth taking by ratings-conscious (or perhaps that should even be "ratings controlled") channel controllers these days.

The problem is Radio 2 is involving - bringing in new presenters to take over shows where some will retire in the years to come. The station also needs to develop new shows around the new presenters too, also maintaining the sound which some listeners have come custom too.

Well yes I don't mean R2 would be better today with shows identical to Charlie Chester or Sing Something Simple, but back in the day the daytime shows did not play pop/chart music from 7.00am - 7.00pm and the weekend shows were mainly free of pop.

Seems R2's music policy is lazy and daytime caters just for pop fans who will switch on the radio at work at 8.00am and it stays on R2 till 5.00pm, so it's for lazy listeners too.

We have Radio 2 on at work and can't keep chopping and changing stations, it doesn't mean we're lazy listeners.
I have to say although I still enjoy some of the music I yearn for the days when there was so much more variety in the music during the daytime.
Over the last 30 days they have played the new songs from Scissor Sisters, George Michael, Paloma Faith, Keane and Amy Mcdonald for a combined total of 293 times.
I don't dislike the songs but Radio 2 are just letting the A list completely overtake the whole music output of the station.

I agree with Gaz generally about most of his comments

I retune my radio quite frequently and quite frankly I simply don't want to listen to c--p - whatever station it's on - and that includes R2 Smile

The problem is that most FM radio stations are just that these days - crap. The BBC is running scared of politicians and providing safe options all across the board and independent commercial radio (national and local) is now owned by a very few large "brands" - who in turn are dictated to by record companies.

The best sources (for me) are definitely on the massive variety of digital sources, both online and over air. Trouble is that they're not so accessible when you're out and about.

Well, it does to me. If you didn't like say a light classical programme at 11.00am then you could put a commercal station on, much the same music as current R2 daytime playlist.

Because listeners are lazy that's how R2 gets it's huge listener numbers for daytime.

I agree, the 'through the night' playlist is much more interesting, the best playlist on R2 (although, again there's no dedicated jazz, folk, blues or light classical sections - why is that?

Over at R3ok or FoR3 you'll see threads devoted to Radio 3's Through The Night playlist, again more interesting, less commercial, than daytime's output.

iplayer allows many listeners to listen to the twilight playlists in the daytime, just think if 2 million people did that for R2 and R3 how it could affect the RAJARs Smile

Trouble with commercial stations is that you have to suffer not only the same annoying playlist but also endless promos and commercials plus total airheads who love the sound of their own voices. At least we don't get all that on R2. Well, with the exception of the latter, perhaps, at breakfast times!

Well, I am fed up of certain presenters' voices on R2, and the nonsense they spout, AND the BBC trailers/commercials, most of which are being heard by listeners with no intention of switching the radio on after 5.00pm or at weekends, so what IS the point???

None at all. That's why I maintain that much of R2's output is beyond redemption!

I agree with much of what Gaz says, especially the thing about offices. You can't keep having a show of hands if something comes on you don't like - it's easier to stick with what's on, which the office has decided is best overall.

The problem with Radio 2 is they should use this opportunity to expand their playlist to a captive audience, not play it so safe.

I went in to work at 6 today and listened to Anneka Rice and I think the music was a lot better than the usual daytime stuff.
Along with some of the playlist stuff she also played Bowie, The Kinks, The Monkees, The Cast of Carousel, Dolly Parton, The Style Council, Frank Sinatra, The BeeGees, Mama Cass, Elvis Presley, The Pasadenas and Culture Club.
I know they are all pop and are not to everyones taste but it's a lot better selection than you get from most of the other daytime shows.
So if Anneka and her producer can do it why can't the other daytime DJs and producers (yes I am mainly talking about Ken Bruce).
I presume they are working on the same music framework as the other daytime shows but are just putting a bit more thought into their show, and not just playing their own favourite records endlessly.

It's all right having a producer making a show sound great with the music, but the presenter needs to work alongside the music too. Some don't care and are there as entertainment.

Yes of course, but R2 is supposed to provide for a wide range of musical tastes (and they don't do that in the daytime) whereas commercial can play bland pop all day.

So, much like R2 back in days, there should be a good mix of programmes daytime, and for the lazy office bland-music lovers stick to local BBC or Capital.

I don't think that Radio 2 should be doing specialist shows during the day - my complaint is more about the standard of some of the daytime presenters who simply are not up to the job compared to the situation a few years ago

As for the suggestion that all commercial stations play'bland pop' all day I'm not sure that's necessarily always true

I've just listened to the Double Top Twenty Show on Smooth - one of the years covered being 1967 - and tracks like 'We Love You' by the Rolling Stones were played as well as 'Pleasant Valley Sunday' by the Monkees and 'Just Loving You' by Anita Harris - not exactly tracks you hear every day Smile

Well I've just listened to almost 6 hours of R2 and have to say I've really enjoyed it. O/H has been working so have been pottering around the house.

After all the Elton John hype I wasn't really relishing this weekend (I only like his music in small doses) but it's been quite good. Note to to R2 people 'don't over hype and we might actually enjoy the shows when they come on air'!

I dipped into Weekend Wogan - as he's back. Trying to be cool, and do the whole twitter thing, which doesn't suit him at all. Obviously deadly is on his hols so he's slightly lost without him sitting in the back ground feeding each other with silly things. It does seem Wogan is there as a spare part now, as he's part of the BBC furniture, and isn't going to be taken away by Pickfords anytime soon.

Where's Richard Madeley?

He's had Twitter for ages Mark so he wasn't trying to be cool.

Would love to know why you think he's a spare part and he didn't sound lost to me..............

PS do you always post the same things here as on DS?

I listen a lot less than a few years ago.

I used to listen weekdays from 06:00 to 12:00, 14:00 to 17:00 sometimes, and then 17:00 until 23:00

but now it maybe 09:30 to 12:00, and then maybe 17:00 to 19:00 occasionally, and then after 19:00, except for 20:00 to 22:00 Mon to Thurs

so most of R2 daytime is no-go Rolling Eyes

I have probably listened a bit more today than I usually do on Saturdays. Saturday mornings are best as there's no nincompoop to give me a splitting headache. Much better to hear Aneka Rice followed by Sounds Of The 60s and Pick Of The Pops. And today the great Steve Lamacq doing Dermot O'Leary's show. Steve is someone I have great respect for as he is from the same 'school' as other DJ greats like Bob Harris & the late John Peel.
