The Government has said 'it has deep sympathy for locked-in sufferer, Tony Nicklinson'. But it opposed his case in the High Court agreeing with judges that it should be up to Parliament to decide any changes to the law. And because Parliament hasn't voted to legalise either assisted suicide or voluntary euthanasia - which is what Tony Nicklinson's case is about, because he couldn't physically kill himself - the Ministry of Justice says it would have been wrong for the courts to over-ride Parliament.
Now next year the former Lord Chancellor, Lord Falconer will introduce a Private Members Bill in the Lords on assisted suicide under strict guidelines, which could win political support. But even he told me he wouldn't want to go as far as backing voluntary euthanasia.
The truth is this whole area is highly emotive and sensitive - it divides both public and political opinion. I think it will be some time yet before we see any real change in the law.

It's what is called a real political 'hot potato'
I feel that everyone should have the right to die if they so choose but of course the problem will always be proving the case after any death - especially in the case of old people
I suppose it would be like most other things if it became legal - most cases would be genuine but there would be a minority who abuse the system and bring it into disrepute _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Gosh Mark, do you mean that you actually generate new topics on here by simply cutting and pasting content from other sources?
I'm truly shocked........................! |

Obviously Colin and others don't have an opinion. Why do you all bother responding as you have no interest... Leave me alone now and go away. I don't want some of you responding to my threads. Leave it to those who are interested. |

Mark, I would say posters here DO have an interest insome of the news topics on the forum, but would welcome some original comment to start off a thread, not paragraphs cut and pasted from the ITV news website! _________________ -

I'm surprised that the R2OK Newsroom hasn't sacked Mark for plagiarism. It happens, of course, but hacks normally have the good sense to delete any clues to the fact........................... |

Aww, Mark don't get discouraged especially about this which I think is a good topic for debate.
My personal view is that in cases like this if the person wishes to die they should be given help to do so.
The Terry Pratchett program about assisted suicide or assisted death as some call it was most interesting. |

He died after contracting pneumonia - but I'm glad in the end he outwitted the system _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Sad story but I guess Tony has got his wish now.
May he rest in peace. |
