Sunday trading laws were relaxed during the Olympics and Paralympics. There are ideas that this could be relaxed full time. Maybe price hikes for Supermarkets? Good or a strain on the economy, and retailers Good or bad for the customer? Also there would be no difference to normal trading hours if it was extended too Sunday - as it's your choice to shop. |

I thought this might happen, while Mark is correct to say it's your choice to shop I wonder how much choice staff are given as the whether they want to work or not. |

Where will it end though. If Sunday becomes a normal trading day then you will need normal public transport services. Then we will need access to our banks and so on until everything is 7 days a week. |

I went to my local branch of Tesco this evening to buy a new ink cartridge and the place was almost empty with only a skeleton staff and nobody manning any of the specialist counters other than Customer Services
I just can't see that there is any real demand for longer Sunday hours although it was useful for me today as I had some urgent documents I needed to print _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

It might be a good thing for the economy. You know when on the news they say things like, an extra bank holiday costs the country £11Bn...cos we all have a day off, well...at £11Bn a day, why don't we all just knuckle down to a six day working week for say... a year.. and bingo - we've paid off all our debts! Yay!... Then we can spend the next fifty years borrowing money again to pay for free stuff - pensions, prescriptions and tuition fees etc... |

It's not only London, it's all over the place. We have three Tesco stores here (one is the largest in the UK, I'm told) that we can pop to at any time - and we use them when we need to. There's a Tesco store in Hunstanton, West Norfolk, where we have our holiday caravan, and we often nip to that one at odd times and there's always people in there. |

A difficult one. My gut feeling is that I don't want Sunday to become indistinguishable from the other 6 days.

To be honest, I think the damage has already been done. When we go (if we have to) to the Centre:MK shopping centre in Milton Keynes on a Sunday it's now as busy, if not busier, than any other day so we're already past the point of no return. |

Certainly is ....and if the shops that open already on a Sunday depended on the likes of me they would soon go out of business...I have never made a habit of ( food) shopping on a Sunday and have no intention of ever starting. |

Do people really buy more because the shops are open for longer? I buy what I need - I don't suddenly think "Oh the shops are open now so what else shall I go and buy?" I would be very sad if Sundays ended up being just another working day for the majority. Surely 6 days a week are enough for people to buy everything they need? I know I'm getting on a bit now but I can't remember anyone starving or going unclothed because they couldn't shop on Sundays. |

I'm not religious but I would want to see Sundays kept separate from the rest of the week, a day of rest etc. After all, we managed in the past without Sunday shopping and it can all be done on the internet anyway.
This nasty little Government of spivs would do anything to 'regenerate' the economy: Tesco's being built all over the countryside, school playing fields being sold off (and lying about the true figures), building on green land instead of using brownfield sites, etc etc. As long as it's not near Chequers of course. |

It's handy be able to get something when you do need it though. Like, right there and then - such as some plumbing bits which we needed in an emergency a few months back and was able to get one within 10 mins from B&Q. Sorted! |

That's another bugbear. Sunday trading has encouraged the DIYers, who love to drill and bang about on a Sunday afternoon. _________________ life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans |

I don't think they should be extended permanently. As others have said we managed for years without them being open at all, so the 6 hours that we have are quite sufficient. At the end of the day there is only so much money available and it will just spread out the spending rather than increase it IMHO.
I don't actually enjoy Sunday shopping unless I'm desperate for a particular thing as everywhere is so crowded and everyone has half a dozen hangers on attached to them!
