I'm not in the habit of listening to Vine at lunchtimes much these days due to the fact that his presentation style grates with me somewhat, but I have stayed tuned for Paddy thingumywotsisname and I have to say that I think he's doing a good job - certainly better than that scatty woman did last week!

His telephone manner is much better; he doesn't compress people's comments down to five seconds or cut them off when he wants to play Elvis Costello for the zillionth time and is generally much more courteous.

Paddy O'Connell. That's the one. He's just told me.

I can't really think of where I heard Paddy before he came to Radio 2. He's doing a great standing in job - Although I think he might be sitting down. Matthew Bannister was another good stand in.

It'll be nice to have Jeremy back.

Sorry but I don't like him, better than Vanessa Feltz though.

Not for me it won't. He's like a cat on hot bricks - I wish he'd just relax a bit more. At least Paddy O'wotsit is a bit more laid back.

You never seem to like anyone who are the regular presenters on the station?

I actually quite like Jeremy V, but have to agree with Colin B about hurrying up callers just to play a record.
If it's an interesting subject can't they just ditch the record that you've probably heard loads of times that week anyway.
I think they should only have 3 subjects for discussion as well, having 4 leaves you hardly any time to discuss much before you have to go to the next subject.
Regarding Paddy O, he's very professional but I think he lacks any real warmth.
They had the perfect host for the show in Jimmy Young anyway and should never have ditched him.

I much prefer Paddy to most of the other stand ins - with the notable exception of Jane Hill

I also agree that JY was the master on that type of show and I'm sure he could quite happily have carried on for many more years Smile

Bring back Brian Hayes. He was a good stand in!

Didn't he go back to Australia some years ago?

I think that was a rumour Helen.
Just found his Blogspot about going to see Warhorse and other stuff in London so I presume he's still here.

Yes I've always liked Brian Hayes and remember him from his days on LBC in London. I have a recording of him reading the bulletin the day that the original Radio Caroline ship (the Mi Amigo) ran aground and ultimately sank on March 16th 1980. A tragic day in British broadcasting history!!! He read it very well... Smile

I liked Brian Hayes too.
I do wish the technical fellows on the JV show could do away with the cross chat problem on the phone lines... it happens so often that somebody is whittering away and JV is trying to interject and they just keep talking! Is it because they don't hear him? I think it is.

I know not many folk on here watch Family Guy, but the occasional similarity between JV's voice and Stewie Griffin's is amazing! Laughing

It's more likely that he's being rude - he's way too impatient with people and makes it obvious that he just wants them to shut up and be unceremoniously dumped in order that he can play a Scissor Sisters record (or something equally bland).

Brian Hayes was my favourite stand-in. He had a discipline that many lack (though Paddy, and Kirsty Young are good too).

I think it's because they keep getting the sort of contributors who like to talk but not listen.

I agree. Brian Hayes has the perfect radio talk show voice, although I'd forgotten that he presented the R2 Breakfast show before Terry Wogan until I checked Wikipedia.
