I have just heard on the radio that Scott McKenzie died on August 18th aged 73. In the last two years, he had apparently suffered from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. He died in his home in Los Angeles.
I am very sad to hear this and I always consider that 'San Franciso' is one of THE tracks of my life. _________________ Pirate Johnnie Walker played my request on 11 April 2009 |

I agree Angela and there was a brief tribute to him on SOTS this morning - that was the first I'd heard about it
It was certainly an iconic track which has stood the test of time which I think will always live in the memories of people of our generation because effectively it represented all that was good vibrant and new about the latter half of the sixties which without any doubt was the happiest time of my life _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

I too was unaware of his death until I heard about it on SOTS yesterday. Very sad . As said above, his wonderful song was an anthem for the flower power generation, the hippies, love and peace etc of the summer of 1967. It really was a beautiful but fleeting era which will never be repeated.
I don't know why the media didn't publicise his death more, I didn't hear any news bulletins about it last weekend. They're too busy with vacuous trivia, I suppose.
Mark: why didn't you tell us about it? It's surely more important than Radio 2 traffic presenters.
Reading various online sites I see the song reached only no 4 in the US. |

Sad news.
His song always reminds me of many trips to the beaches of Tynemouth/Whitley Bay that summer when the sun seemed to shine a lot, I was waiting for GCE results as well but still felt carefree.
