My husband does airline representation part time (not check in) at Manchester Airport, mostly for a Canadian airline but they also look after Belavia who fly in from Minsk in July and August mainly with children who come from the Chernobyl area. Most weeks he comes in with tales of how well behaved the kids are and a few sad stories too. It isn't the first time there has been a tear in my eye after hearing them.
A few weeks ago one little girl was in floods of tears, my O/H asked a helper what was wrong and was told she had no parents to go home to, lived in an orphanage and didn't want to go back.
Today flight was the last of the season, and one of the helpers pointed out a boy of about 11. She said that he came with only a small haversack, which contained 2 small gifts for the people he was going to and 2 pairs of shorts and a T shirt, plus the clothes he was wearing to last him a month. I asked if he'd been given anything, which seems to be the norm, and today he went back with a bag that weighed 30 kgs and looked very happy. 
It sort of puts things into perspective...................
