And from the same POTP, 1963, my track of the day was Sukiyaki by Kyo Sakamoto. A fab little tune and so very unlike 1963.

I don't think that new group from Liverpool that everyone's talking about will get very far though.

LOL about the Fab Four!

I'd be hard pushed to pick just one tune from that chart as there were so many good ones, brought back loads of memories as well. Love both of those mentioned so far, but I'll pick Billy Fury's In Summer, it's rarely heard so a treat to hear it.

My Track Of The Day (well, yesterday) on Radio 2 was Billy Paul's version of Elton's Your Song which Trevor Nelson played last night.
This was the b-side of Me And Mrs Jones from 1973. It's a superb fusion of blues, jazz and gospel and must be my favourite cover ever and so unlike the original (which is also very good of course).
So good to hear a song like this on the radio.

I very rarely listen to Steve Wright but thought I'd tune in this afternoon to see what he is playing and the second song I heard was the lovely New Kid In Town by The Eagles..

I see Helen has started a thread about Feedback and the Radio 2 playlist ...this one, for all I know, could be one of the ones played to death.... Twisted Evil

It is a bit, to be honest. It's certainly one of the top 5 regular Eagles songs to be played.

Didn't hear much R2 yesterday but Mark Radcliffe played the Supremes' 'Come See About Me' about 11.15 last night. Not heard that in a while.

Great to hear Southern Nights by Glen Campbell on Chris Evans show, and Theme From A Summer Place by Percy Faith played by Ken Bruce.
In fact Ken has played some good tracks in general this week, is G.Bones on holiday?

I thought Ken's stuff has been good this week as well!

My track for today has to be Young Gifted and Black on Tracks of My Years, another version was on Jamie Cullum last night.

Yes, that was a great track Helen, although my favourite that Tanita Tikaram has picked this week is "Looking For A Way Out" by Odyssey.

My track of the day would have to be 'Girl,You'll Be a Woman Soon' by Neil Diamond played on the JV Show today

Probably his best song in my opinion although he never ever really came up with even a mediocre track

I also like the 90's cover version by Urge Overkill - rarely ever heard on radio today Sad

I enjoyed Neil Diamond as well Ruddles, I've heard Jeremy play it a few times. I first heard it sung by Cliff Richard way, way back.

For years, Becky, I thought that was an Aretha original.

This was a revelation to me this morning on SOTS. I always thought Nicky Thomas did the original

Four Preps - Love Of The Common People

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WzGtmK6EIg

And this one, from last week...or the week before. Thought it was a Supremes original

Johnny and Jackie - Someday We'll Be Together

Well of course for me, "Peaches En Regalia" by my hero Frank Zappa was the track of the day on SOTS this morning... and as if that wasn't enough, Hendrix with "Crosstown Traffic" plus Cream, "I Feel Free" and... John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers with "A Hard Road" !! Razz Razz

Nice to hear Marty Robbins too

Brian said that Ben co-wrote that song but not according to the Wiki (I know) page about it, he didn't.

I missed that one, raver, as the phone went in the second hour of SOTS and when I caught up with it later in the day I must have skipped it by mistake ....went back to listen when I saw your post ....I knew it was a Paul Young cover but didn't know The Four Preps had done the original ..didn't sound at all like The Four Preps ...sounded like there was just one vocalist on it.

Mine too. I'm never awake early enough on Saturday to catch SOTS from the beginning so I catch up later, as I did so this morning. Second on the list for me was Hendrix's "Crosstown Traffic" which, as always, sounded utterly wonderful.

It was indeed good to hear Hendrix, Cream and John Mayall on SOTS.
It makes a change from all those ridiculous obscurities from 1961.

However, it was also nice to hear The Fortunes' Here It Comes Again, a nice mid 60s pop song.

It was nice to hear one of my favourite songs from the last few years,'We Are The People' by Empire Of The Sun, an excellent song from 2009, played on Ken's show this morning. I know Zoe Ball played it a lot at the time so presumably Gary Bones the producer of the show likes it.

Excellent song.

Haven't heard one on Radio 2 for quite a while. I heard this one on 6 music yesterday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Yd8TNzOc8
You can be sure that if I was to hear it on Radio 2, then I'd have it as my track of that day. Comsat Angels 'Independence Day' - Right up my street!!

Some songs I love on SOTS this morning but Tony has just played Blue Angel by Roy Orbison which is a great favourite of mine so halfway through this particular day this is my Track of the Day....what a voice he had...

No doubt about my track of today. It has to be the 'country showstopper' on Drivetime. I only caught the end of it, so will have to catch all of it on 'Listen Again'. It was 'Rex Bob Lowenstein' by Mark Germino. It sounded like this version that was played: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYQZMtLv9ng
There is also a more uptempo take on it which he did with The Sluggers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uY7VNjCLsO4
I'll catch up later to hear which one it was.

Becky/Helen: 'Do I Love You' is a fabulous song and it's nice to hear it as opposed to 'Be My Baby' and 'Baby I Love You'.

It was the accoustic version (the first link) A great song which turned out to be very prophetic!

For me today there can only be one choice - played on Drivetime before the 6 o'clock news

'I'm In Love With The Girl On a Virgin Manchester Megastore Checkout Desk'

I've never heard that track played on any radio station in the last 35 years - not even on shows like POTP - and it just brought back such wonderful happy memories

Driving along the M56 tonight on my way home I turned my car music system up to full volume and soon afterwards ground to a halt being stuck in a massive queue and so I opened up the driver's window trying to see how big the queue was up ahead only to discover with great pleasure that every car around me was also tuned in to R2 also playing the track at maximum volume - I reckon between us we were probably even louder than Deep Purple in their heyday

Everyone should listen to that track at least once before they die - I go to sleep very happy tonight Very Happy

Brilliant - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvV465SHJBg

Anyone else and it would probably have been "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?"

I had a feeling that it would not really be quite your bag Schiz - I agree that generally we do have similar tastes in music but I think that punk and new wave is probably a genre which many rock music fans still think of as being not quite the real thing

I love all virtually all forms of rock music starting with the superb progressive rock of the late 60's /early 70's right through punk and new wave and including heavy metal grunge and more recently indie rock

The only brand I've never been able to get to grips with is thrash metal which really does nothing for me at all Smile

One from Thursday. Pink Floyd's 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond'. Heard on Jeremy Vine's show, though it was Jane Garvey presenting it.

Not from R2 but heard Billy Joel's 'Leave A Tender Moment Alone' which I adore from the Innocent Man album on Cool 98.7 yesterday.

Today's track - Jack Johnson's 'Better Together' heard a few minutes ago on Jo Whiley.

Steve Wright played a Beatles sounding jingle (All you need is love I think) then 'I Feel Fine' followed by 'She Loves You'.............. Both sounded great.
