I can't believe it's been 11 years since the tragic day. I still remember to the day - I was out in the garden mowing the lawn and wife called me to tell me a building was on fire in New York, and that's when it all started to happen... |

It's the anniversary of Kristal Nacht in Germany, I think. Quite what it has to do with New York is a mystery, though!!! |

I was in the kitchen and older son who was watching TV in the living room came in to tell me to switch on the kitchen set. I immediately phoned a friend of mine who I knew had visited New York a few months earlier and had been up one of the twin towers. It was bad enough thinking it had been a terrible tragic accident but when the second plane crashed in ... |

I had turned the news on on that fateful day and the phone rang ...it was a friend so I turned the sound down on the TV. As we were talking I was watching the pictures and slowly it dawned on me something awful was happening ..I said to my friend " I'm not sure what I'm seeing on the news but I think you should turn the news on now"....when I came off the phone the afternoon then followed in a haze of unbelieving horror at what I was seeing.

9/11 was probably the most shocking day of my life. I'd never experienced the emotions brought on by those images before.... for weeks afterwards.
I decided to remember the occasion by flying the Stars & Stripes at half mast for days after the event and on every anniversary for maybe 10 years. Well, 10 years has gone by and I'm hoping to be out of this place in the next few months so I thought I'd fly the flag one more time today.

I'm disappointed that a couple of posters here decided to soil this thread with a tired comment on the 9/11 11/9 thing when (despite the thread title) Mark clearly said 11 years to the day, so we are talking about the 11th day of September, and 9/11 is the generally worldwide accepted 'title' of the event, anyway....
My brother-in-law, well my wife's brother-in-law, was witness, well sort of, he had just got off the subway near Wall St when it all happened, he didn't see the plane impacts, surrounded by high rise buildings, and he couldn't get back on a train, so with thousands of others walked miles back to his home in north Bronx thinking the world was coming to an end. _________________ -

Thank you Becky, over the years the half mast flag has stirred a few comments from passers by and neighbours, mostly appreciative.
Through gossip, we've heard many of our neighbours think we must be Americans!
To be honest, I was dreading to hear some insulting comment around the time of 9/11... I think I would have been arrested I felt so strongly about what happened.

Depressingly, I felt that way too for a while.. I felt the attack was so extreme, the Americans and some of it's allies, wouldn't let it go unanswered. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
