Tonight on BBC4 at 21-45

In 1978 the Undertones released Teenage Kicks, one of the most perfect and enduring pop records of all time - an adolescent anthem that spoke to teenagers all over the globe. It was the first in a string of hits that created a timeless soundtrack to growing up, making the Undertones one of punk rock's most prolific and popular bands.

Unlike the anarchic ragings of the Sex Pistols or the overt politics of the Clash, the Undertones sang of mummy's boys, girls - or the lack of them - and their irritating cousin Kevin. But their gems of pop music were revolutionary nonetheless - startlingly positive protest songs that demanded a life more ordinary. Because The Undertones came from Derry, epicentre of the violent troubles that tore Northern Ireland apart during the 1970s......

Becky, in 1978 (just before Teenage Kicks hit the chart) the Undertones played in a pub just up the road from me! And very loud they were too.

BTW: Teenage Kicks was John Peel's favourite single and was played at his funeral.

They were a bit raucous and anarchic, I recall. It was a small venue in a pub called the Craufurd Arms in Wolverton, Milton Keynes (they never had a website then but do now! - http://www.thecraufurdarms.com ). The sound was awful but there was clearly something about them that said they would get big. Not long after that gig, John Peel featured them in session on his R1 show, and they took flight from there.

Just been watching this on IPlayer! The band are still going with a different singer and I was lucky enough to see them in Belfast last November as part of a charity gig where they played the debut album from start to finish followed by some of their other material.

Since they reformed in 1999 they have released two new albums - the first of which (Get What You Need) I would highly recommend!

I enjoyed this programmme..

It was essentially about four, fast friends who formed a band and looked for a singer to complete them ....and that's how it stayed (four friends and a singer) as far as I could see ....shame Fergal couldn't see his way to contribute to it
