Very sad news. I hope the killer never sees day light again.

Seems like he had made his mind up to hand himself in (for previous murders) but decided to take out two police officers first; he lured them to the street where he shot them and then threw a grenade at them.....

he'd used a grenade in previous murders too.

This really is a case where - if convicted- the death penalty should apply
and I don't say that lightly as I am not in favour of it being reintroduced indiscriminately

Of course it will never happen for this or any other cold blooded pre planned murder quite simply brcause we are stuck with this ludicrous EU membership and have no say on such issues - everyone knows they are controlled by the unelected officials within the European Commission

I really feel for the relatives of the two murdered officers but let us not forget the father and son who this evil bastard is alleged to have also killed Evil or Very Mad

The initial news of a policewoman being shot and killed was shocking enough but then after the news of the second policewoman's death came the incomprehensible news that they were thought to have been lured to their deaths ...that was the most shocking piece of news for me..I couldn't believe that someone could do that ...

This morning Fiona was discussing wedding preparations with her boyfriend and then she went into work and was talking with her colleagues about how to make wedding invitations on the internet

I was listening to the ongoing news about this on the BBC this afternoon and Ian Hanson, chairman of Greater Manchester Police Federation, was being interviewed before the women's names were released and the interviewer said "we don't know their names yet but could you give us some details about them ...are they married etc" ..I couldn't believe my ears ...Mr Hanson replied he didn't think it was appropriate to do that ..I emailed the BBC to complain.

Mr Hanson went on to say "These officers had an absolute right to go home tonight to their loved ones. Sometimes you hear people say when something like this happens that it's an occupational hazard, it goes with the territory. It doesn't. This is cold-blooded murder. This is two kids, gunned down in cold blood. Greater Manchester has lost two fine police officers today."

Listening to this news today has made me incredibly sad ...those poor, poor women and their families....

It's a dreadfully sad event. The murderer is an evil monster, and should be left to rot in jail until he dies.

Norman Tebbit has called for the return on the death penalty. There are many police officers killed in the US and they have the death penalty in some states. This doesn't stop killings. There needs to be tougher sentences - life means life with no parole.

Two points:

1. You can forget about the death penalty coming back because it isn't going to happen.

2. Why on earth was this man bailed when he was a murder suspect?

Don't agree with the death penalty although tempted in some cases. If this bloke is found guilty he will die behind bars, cop killers do.Harry Roberts shot 3 policemen dead in the late sixties and is still inside

Ian: exactly. It's amazing this creature was granted bail whilst suspected of two murders. The trouble is that there is a strict time limit in which police can detain a suspect without charging him. But why was he not charged? Why didn't the police apply for an extension of time? What were the conditions of bail? Why was he not monitored, knowing he was involved with the underworld?

Police cutbacks don't help presumably. Someone will find it hard to sleep tonight, knowing he has indirectly caused the deaths of two WPCs.

I didn't know Harry Roberts was still inside.

He shot three coppers dead outside HMP Wormwood Scrubs in West London in August 1966 and was sentenced presumably to life in 1967. That means he has done 45 years. Surely it's time to let him out? (and keeping a cell free for the Mancunian scumbag).

I vividly remember watching coverage of that very sad event in 1966 when I was aged eleven and it made such a big impact on me at an impressionable age that I still think about that case from time to time and actually had a dream about it a few years ago

I don't think Harry Roberts should ever be let out - he should die in prison just like his accomplicies - if you want to create space in prison for the likes of this present monster then simply stop treating financial crimes more seriously than crimes against human beings

People convicted of things like insurance fraud or tax and benefit fraud should not be in prison - they are no threat to society and should be given community service orders with real teeth Smile

Couldn't disagree more, Ruddles: financial/tax/benefit fraudsters ARE a threat to ordinary decent hardworking and often elderly people and they should be locked up. Otherwise there's a two tier system in which middle class white collar people are given cushy soft community service orders (cleaning the streets for about two hours probably), whereas blue collar working class people are imprisoned.

Are you saying the odious Robert Maxwell should have been given a community order (if he hadn't thankfully drowned himself to save the taxpayer a lot of money)? His crimes were not victimless. Thousands of pensioners lost out through his activities.

Schiz - what I am saying is that we have a limited number of prison places available in this country so we have to use them to remove from society people who represent a real physical threat to the general public

Benefit and tax fraud and insurance fraud may be very odious crimes to most ordinary people but nobody is likely to end up dead as a result of the activities of those types of criminals and bearing in mind that our society is becoming more violent than it used to be we have to protect the public by reserving prison for criminals who pose a serious threat to life or the general well b eing of society

At the end of the day money is only money and financial crime can be punished effectively in other ways if there is the will to do so by the courts and the establishment Smile

Being let out on bail for murder and other serious crimes, is a recent phenomenon, isn't it? The police said they didn't have enough evidence to keep him inside, yet on the news, they showed CCTV footage of him and an accomplice, lobbing a grenade into somebody's front garden, on the same day as he was alleged to have murdered David Short.

It's completely ridiculous raver

What it tells me is that the police are generally more interested in political corectness and complying with the rules to an absurd extent rather than having the concept of protection of the public as their number one priority

I suppose in this case they never ever thought that the repercussions of their decisions would rebound on the police themselves - but whilst I really feel for the families of the dead officers I think certain people within the GMP or the CPS must be having quite a few sleepless nights this week and probably for many months - at least I hope so Smile

Ruddles: yes, if the criteria for custodial sentence or otherwise is simply lack of prison space, then the murderers etc should be locked up and the financial fraudsters should be heavily fined / given community orders.
But the simple answer is build more prisons! Those Tory spivs Cameron and Osbourne have already indicated they want to plaster the countryside over with more housing to 'regenerate' the economy. Let them build more prisons to accommodate both violent criminals and financial fraudsters.
I pay taxes and I don't mind paying taxes for this worthy cause.

I agree with all that you say Schiz but when you think that it costs around five hundred pounds a week to keep someone in prison I can't see the present Government wanting to build more prisons at a time when they are hell bent on reducing expenditure - and quite frankly I don't think any Government would want to do so in the present economic climate which according to Mervyn King tonight is likely to last for some time

So we have to prioritise when it comes to sending people to prison

I think it's a mistake in any event to send financial criminals to prison quite simply because it allows them to escape from the public revulsion at their actions - if you make such people wear a very obvious tag for 24 hours a day that is far more likely to provide an effective punishment rather than sticking them in prison which effectively allows them to avoid public revulsion at their actions Smile

Ruddles, I suppose you're right in that in this current financial climate we cannot afford to build more prisons which is a pity.
Now, if we were to stop sending millions in foreign aid to rich countries like India....

Coming back to this current case, as I said before, the police had to grant bail as they had run out of time in which to find evidence to charge. Though, as oldraver says, I'd have thought chucking a grenade into someone's garden on the same day as the original murder would constitute some sort of evidence.

On the subject of foreign aid I completely agree Schiz and probably that is the main reason why I dislike Cameron so much

He is simply not a proper Conservative - he's a PR politician just like Blair who will do anything to make himself look good on the world stage - and he doesn't give a toss about the British people Mad
