That's rather a sweeping generalisation Ruddlescat - my life is far from c**p. I think 2012 has in many ways and for many people been good.

I'm not talking about 2012 specifically - I'm talking rather more about today's society which as far as I am concerned is absolutely sick to the core - try watcing Crimewatch right now and you might understand what I'm saying:evil:

Actually - come to think about it what has been good about this year to date?

We have a recession which is now officially worse than that of the 1930s - we have had the worst summer weather for almost a century with hundreds of people losing their homes and possessions and we still have a record level of youth unemployment -just to mention a few problems

Ah wait a minute - I've just realised I've overlooked our excellent performance in some recent athletics competition which bored many of us to death on out TV screens for weeks on end and probably will end up costing the British taxpayers yet more of their hard earned cash

I suppose it's probably been good for the athletes involved but sport is only one small part of the picture and the rest of that picture isdepressing to say the least Sad

I really have no answer for someone so determindly pessimistic. If you can only see the Golden Jubilee, Olympics and Paralympics as events, discounting the joy amongst the spectators and those participating, then I give up!

Well quite clearly on a personal level we probably all can point to certain things in our own individual lives which have gone fairly well - myself included

But that type of approach with respect completely illustrates the point I was making i.e. that there is little social cohesion in our society today and people are generally interested only in themselves and really don't give a toss about anything or anyone else

I am sure that probably explains for example why we have gang warfare escallating rapidly in this country as we all witnessed only last week not to mention examples of individuals believing that they have some right to commit mass murder as happened in both Cumbria and the North East fairly recently

But of course just so long as British athletes do well at the Olympics - and I use that term loosely as some of them were not even born in Britain - then it seems that all these problems in some people's eyes just seem to be ignored - and I certainkly don't regard myself in any way as a pessimist - but I am a realist and don't fall into the trap of seeing everything through rose tinted spectacles Rolling Eyes

But you ARE falling into the trap of seeing everything through shitty brown spectacles.

As others have said it's not bad everywhere. This year I have earned more than ever before as a self-employed person, what recession, I ask? Construction is booming in Birmingham and Coventry.

While you wonder how 'bad' things are today have a google about the conditions of mining familes up to the 1940s.

I remember the slums that still existed in Britain in the early 1960s, and before that they were so much worse. Check out the time of 'Cathy Come Home' filmed partly in old Ladywood, Birmingham. Find out why the organisation 'Shelter' was formed.

Yes John - I don't disagree - financially it has been quite a good year for me too Very Happy

And yes the physical infrastructure of the country has improved vastly since even the 1960's when I was young and that has to be a good thing although I have to sound a cautionary note by pointing out that homelessness is increasing quite rapidly at present after many years of it going down

My main gripe is more about social aspects of society rather than physical or material ones - yes almost everyone has at least one mobile phone now and the majority of people own cars and have access to the internet so there is no doubt that most people are better off but is society really better as a result of all this?

Moral standards in Britain have never been lower in my lifetime as was evidenced by the riots last year when many thought it was fine to walk into shops and take whatever they could carry - human life has become substantially cheaper than it used to be and dishonesty is everywhere even amongst politicians and the police service

I attribute most of this to the systematic destruction of the Christian religion in this country and it's replacement by a multi cultural mish mash with everyone doing their own thing - I'm not especially religious but the fact is the diminution of the influence of the Christian religion in this country has directly led to people believing that there is no moral code which they have a duty to obey and that cannot really be solved by passing laws - it needs a change of social and moral attitudes which frankly I just can't ever see happening and I suppose at times that can leave even the most optimistic person feeling seriously depressed Sad

I think I must be living in a parallel universe! I live with my two grand-daughters and so come in contact with quite a few teenagers and really can't recognise in them the lack of good moral standards you see. They all seem to be working hard both at school/uni and in part-time jobs and do their bit for charities..

Are there bad people out there doing bad things? Yes, of course there are, but there always have been. Have you forgotten the mods and rockers - the gangs of their time? I understood that the crime rate including violent crime was going down.

I realise that you are only prepared to sneer at the Olympics etc but I thought it was an excellent example of people of all nationalities - both participants and spectators - getting on well together and joyfully. Surely that is a positive?

Yes - it is certainly positive but it's a distraction from the far more serious issues affecting our society today

Also I wasn't singling out young people as having a lack of decent moral standards - the problem runs through the whole of our society across all age groups and all classes of people Sad

I also live with two teenagers who are both hardworking and actually I feel very sorry for young people today many of whom have little chance of finding a job and those who do are often on short term contracts and what chance will they ever have even to save up for a decent car let alone a house

Which brings me back to my original point - our society is sick when many young people are effectively abandoned with nothing to look forward to and pretty poor prospects

I really don't think much has changed with regard to the % of people who ignore a moral code. It's just the press/TV/internet too easily bring examples to our attention.

As essexlady says the vast majority of young folk and politicians and police are fine honest hard-working folk.

Our street is probably representative - about 100 homes. About 1/2 are detached homes or bungalows, about 1/2 are rented apartments, doctors and dustbin men live here as well as many OAPs.

In our street there is just one problem family (that we know about) in the street who drive crazy, deal in drugs, fight in the street and get visits from the police.

Everybody knows about them. As far as I know the other 99 homes are good honest folk.
