Jeff Wayne's original double album was a classic, at a time when concept albums were all the rage. It wasn't especially well recorded, edited or produced, but it was certainly star-studded and it was good enough to sell billions - I've still got my copy, in 1970s wobble-board-thin CBS vinyl - and Justin Hayward's Forever Autumn is a pop standard.

Since then there have been multiple remixes, edits, remasterings and "collectors editions"; it has been made into a stage musical which has toured this country and spawned similar all over the world, and there are DVDs and video games.

They have now decided to milk the formula a bit more by remaking the original, with Gary Barlow replacing Justin Hayward, but, judging by Radio 2's current Record Of The Week, managing to sound exactly the same.

I know the answer before I utter the question, but - Why?

Don't be silly Ron - Justin's original is a real classic track and nobody should let the likes of Gary Barlow anywhere near it

I simply cannot understand why artists attempt cover versions with tracks where the original is so go that it cannot be bettered Rolling Eyes

Gary Barlow's cover is just bland and adds nothing new. I expect better from him especially as he's a good songwriter.
Mind you, I didn't like Justin Hayward's original much, though the lyrics are nice.

Ruddles: covering a classic song is an easy way to fame and riches. No work required.

The problem I have with the new version is that it sounds exactly the same, but not as well put-together.

I don't understand the point of doing a new version in the same style as 30 years ago - surely an update should have new arrangements, new synths, and more modern instruments? Just seems utterly pointless.

Exactly.

The only point is financial.

Yes, and I don't think it's fair to have a pop at Gary Barlow seeing as this is entirely done by Jeff Wayne. It's Wayne who should be getting some stick (but I expect he's got followers who won't hear a word against him).

I guess the real proof is in the eating, so to speak. If people buy the product then it will justify the effort - and if doesn't, it won't. Simple.

Well I'm sure they will.
Jeff or Gary or Liam, or any combination of those three, will undoubtedly do a tour of all the strategically important TV shows to publicise it, and the original will magically disappear from the shelves of the few record shops which remain, and temporarily become unavailable online as well.
