We went to the Top Gear live event in Birmingham yesterday and had an absolutely brilliant time. Here are a few short videos (all between 20-30 seconds) I shot in the arena, some are slightly wobbly but you get the idea.

Hope you enjoy looking. Very Happy

If you like that kind of thing - whilst I am a great fan of all cars and especially classic cars I wouldn't be even see dead anywhere any event put on by Top Gear

To me they are simply a load of exhibitionists promoting their own egos with very little serious interest in the subject they claim to promote Rolling Eyes

*snigger* Laughing

Judging by the amount of people that were at the show there are plenty that do enjoy such events.
I saw so many smiling happy faces, what's the harm in it?

Some people say I'm rather like him Colin - but I take that as a very great compliment - grumpy and proud to be so Smile

Getting back to the subject in hand I've nothing at all against people enjoying themselves but for me the whole 'Top Gear' thing has completely lost its way

It used to be a half hour show where the emphasis was on the cars and where the presenters took a back seat - if you'll pardon the rather bad pun- but in recent years it has simply become a vehicle - sorry another bad pun- for Clarkson and his fellow clowns to indulge their own egotistical preferences

If some of you disagree then so be it but I know that I'm certainly not alone in holding such views on this subject Smile

I'm with ruddlescat. After watching any episode of Top Gear I fail to recall anything technical about the cars, just stupid things said by presenters.

Personally I couldn't care less about the technical ins and outs of cars, if I did I'd watch 5th Gear instead.
I find Top Gear highly entertaining, I love the banter, the fun and the general daftness of it.
Whatever you may think of them they've taken a program for car geeks and made it appeal to a wider audience of over 8m which is incredible for.

a) a BBC2 program
b) a Sunday night

And on that bombshell..... Laughing

The posts about the TV show called "Top Gear" are quite irrelevant. Why? Well, let's quote Toggy's opening post:

There. It's about the event at the NEC, which is an event which has only the words "Top Gear" in common with the TV show. The reason is that the BBC has licensed the use of the name to the event organisers. However, the event is designed to attract a much wider audience than the TV show for the reason that Toggy has explained, and I absolutely concur with that.

I know people who go to it - not just because there's a huge range of exhibitors but also because it affords people from all walks of life the opportunity to meet their peers and talk auto-geekery. And if they're not into auto-geekery then they just take in whatever they want to take in. Period.

So what's the big deal?

Anyway, Top Gear hasn't been a show about the "technical ins and outs of cars" for years and years, but so what? The reason the format was changed many years ago was because the old "tech" format wasn't attracting audiences in any viable numbers. These days, it's really a bit of light entertainment that's put together with a massive tongue in the ol' cheek and is a bit of a laugh. It's also a format that is licensed all over the world by the BBC and if other broadcasters don't make their own version they buy the BBC's. It makes lots of money for the BBC so they must be doing something right. I don't watch it often, but when I do I usually find it very entertaining. And I'm not what can be described as a petrolhead in the least.

So, Toggy, I'm glad you had a good time at the event! It sounds like it was fab....... and ignore Victor Meldrew! Smile

Well Colin, if you reckon my real identity is Victor Meldrew then you may care to recall that he was sadly killed in a hit and run incident around ten years ago

So from that you must conclude that I am communicating with you from beyond the grave

If I were you I'd be watching my back - don't forget it's Halloween on Wednesday and if I were you I'd be slightly worried about problems with the Ghoulies - and of course the ghosts as well Shocked
