I think we all know about this Mark...........

Terrible for those caught up in it.

I was in Florida until last Tuesday and they were tracking Sandy during the previous week as it could have hit that state. I was also part of a mandatory evacuation there a good few years ago now, it's quite scary I can tell you.

Mark: I think you'll find New York is on the east coast, not the west coast.

I'm glad you're not a pilot or air traffic controller.

I wish the various media organisations in this country would remember that there is another country north of the border. I have relations in Canada, as, I suspect, millions of others do. How about our news teams continuing reports of this major storm as it hits Canada so we can see how it's affecting Canada. As it will.

Indeed.
The storm's path is projected northwards into Canada and, although its force will be decreasing all the time, its size is such that its effects are being felt well into the States and Canada, particularly the Great Lakes which are so big that tidal surges could reach Minnesota, Wisconsin and most of southern Ontario.

A reminder of the awesome power of Nature, and the futility of Man and all his attempts to defend himself, his land and his house against it.

Seen on Twitter:
"Hello, I am Hurricane Sandy, and this is my friend Hurricane Julian"
See - even the jokes are feeble.

I do too so I would also like to know how it is effecting Canada.

Whilst I don't seek to underestimate the seriousness of the problems on the Eastern coast of the USA I really do think that media coverage in Britain of the whole thing is completely over the top

I am old enough to recall the great storm in this country in October 1987 which received virtually no coverage on any of the American TV channels and I dare say the same can probably be said about the devastating floods in places like Cumbria and Cornwall only a few years ago

Why is it that when such things happen in America we get wall to wall coverage in Britain but when similar events happen in Britain the American media simply aren't interested? - I'm certainly not anti American but the situation annoys me intensely

I completely agree with the comments made about the lack of any emphasis on the likely impact on Canada - a country which after all still has our Queen as Head of State which alone should justify the media taking rather more of a serious interest Smile

I think it's a bit more serious than the '87 storm.

I'm not saying that the events in America shouldn't be covered on British TV and in the press here - I just don't think it should be the lead story on every single TV Channel - there are serious events closer to home - for example today a woman appeared in Court in North Wales charged with the murder of four people including two young children by deliberately starting a fire in their flat in Prestatyn and for me that should provide the lead story on all British TV bulletins - I think that in this country our news bulletins should prioritise home news such as that and not what is happening in America or The Middle East or places like India and Pakistan - of course it's important to keep abreast of what's going on in the rest of the world - but not at the expense of demoting serious events here in our own news bulletins Mad

I don't think a woman being charged with four murders in Prestatyn is of any real interest to anyone outside the family and locality, tragic though it is. Besides such atrocities happen every week here.

The hurricane in the north eastern US and Canada (and in the Carribean) does deserve all the headlines it is getting. After all, the NY Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have closed down, presumably affecting the global economy, two nuclear power stations were threatened, and the result of the US Presidential Election could be affected. Sandy is important!

I'm sure it's very important to people living in the USA and Canada Schiz but to me what's happening here is of far greater interest

The problem essentially is that ever since the concept of 24 hour news channels was inflicted on us there simply isn't enough home news to fill up what is a very big schedule so these channels have to alter their emphasis to drag in loads of foreign news and in a way I can understand why that happens

The problem comes because certain people within the news media are simply lazy so what for example is being churned out on News 24 simply to fill in time gets immediately transferred over to the main News on BBC1 whereas what should happen is that news bulletins on the main TV Channels should be separately run and should not simply ape most of the filler material on the 24 hour news channels

We need less news but better quality and more relevant news Smile

New Jersey seems the worse hit. President Obama has stopped the campaigning ahead of the Election and will visit the area.

Some parts of New York is still without power and some parts if not all of the Subway is still not in operation.

For the way he's played it so far that's the election in the bag for Obama I reckon.

The problem with the UK TV news media is they run it like an under 5’s football match:- all the players gathered around and fighting for the ball, following it around the pitch in an undisciplined scrum. They all report the same story about the same ball at the same time- because that is all they can see.

I totally agree with schiz, on all points so won't add much more. Like it or not America is far more important globally than Britain will ever be so of course things like this will dominate the news throughout the world.

No doubt we'll hear about any problems in Canada when they happen. The flights from Toronto to Manchester were running early yesterday as it happens!

Did you have the same thoughts after 9/11 Ruddles?

The coverage today has been a great deal better Helen and far more balanced with important British news not getting submerged as it did yesterday

9/11 was very different because it caused the death of some British people and impacted on this country not least because it resulted in Blair dragging Britain into an illegal war by lying to the British Parliament and people and of course terrorism is an issue which affects all democratic countries in the Western world including ours so I don't think the two things are really comparable

Don't get me wrong - I have a great deal of sympathy with those affected in the USA and have in the past spent quite a bit of time there and I have a relative who lives there though thankfully on the West coast

Incidentally I heard your contribution on the JV Show today Helen - certainly sounds like you have had a worse than normal problem with jet lag so hope you feel better soon Smile

I was on the phone for a good part of the show as well!

In-laws in The Bronx still have no power and we can't Skype them. They are a few miles up/inland from Manhattan. I don't expect any of them went to work today (subway to Manhattan still closed).

Sorry Helen I got that wrong - it was actually on the Richard Allinson Show
Embarassed

He said that Helen May from Wilmslow had been in touch saying that she had flown out of the East coast of America just in time and was suffering from bad jet lag - or words to that effect

I suppose I'm so used to hearing your name on the JV show that my brain didn't quite register that it was later on when Richard was playing the 'Halloween Oldies' Smile

Ah well he fabricated that a little bit Ruddles...........

I did say I wasn't long back from holiday in Florida and it was good to hear him at a civilised hour for a change (rather than his usual middle of the night, which I never hear live!)

I didn't hear it so it must have been after I'd gone out!

Jet lag normally takes a week to work it's way out of me. This time I was fine to start with and got worse later.............

Apparently they had to postpone shooting of Russel Crowe's new movie because of flooding in the NY area.

He's starring in a film about Noah. (no, I didn't make that up)

Got the power back in their Bronx district on Saturday, but wife's brother-in-law has to work from home this week as his Manhattan office block has been occupied by military/relief personnel!
