Heard something about this last week and just remembered again. Is this genuine?
Sarah Kennedy was on about the proposed car tracking-tax scheme on her show and apparently is largely responsible for making a petition widely known throughout the country .
The petition against 'Pay as you go' road tax is on the 10 Downing St website but they didn't tell anybody about it.
At the time of Sarah's comments only 250,000 people had signed and now it's 1,250,000. Apparently there is only one week left to register your objection to the tax (20 Feb).

Anyone know how many signatures the petition needs? 20 million?

Waste of time signing it, they don't care what anyone thinks. |

I've a feeling this was also featured on Jeremy Vine's show too. |

It is in most of the newspapers and as Sarah dutifully reads them out word for word every morning, (except for inserting her own malaprops), that would be how she may be seen to be promoting it.
Wonderful malaprop from her today when she said the England cricket team were using sports psychiatrists not sports psychologists. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

She was probably more accurate describing the profession of the consultants! |

Oh yes & she was talking yet again about skinny models and Belsen. It seems like a daily obsession with her now.
Would that she was so worried about obessity, alcoholism or other addictions. Maybe she can join the Salvation Army. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Signed it back in November when it first came onto the Internet. HMG put some predictable spin out when it hit the million saying something along the lines of 'well, a million signatures doesn't mean much'. Seems they've done a U-turn on this position since the weekend, but it'll only be lip-service. They're determined to see this road-pricing thing through, which will just price poorer people off the roads. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I signed it but it wont make a difference as they are going to be carrying out a trial. How on earth can the government expect everyone to pay out for a box. It's going to cost millions to set up tracking systems fitted on lamp posts etc etc, and then they will need planning permission to do this and there will be an uproar from local residents how they could effect peoples health just like mobile phones. How would it work for mothers who do the school run? How would it work in London alongside the congestion charge? It's another Tax to try and stop people using cars.

Just put some aluminium foil over the box and let the satellite try to pick up the signals then.
It's a tax to stop *poorer* people using their cars, Mark - people with more money will still cope. As most goods and services still go by road because there is often no alternative, everything will again go up in price to compensate for the tax. If you want a joiner, a painter, a plumber, etc. - they'll have to pay the charge as you can't expect them to work in the dark or travel at off-peak times of day - that means they'll either be on your doorstep at 6 in the morning or after 10. They'll have to pass the charge onto you, the customer.
I travelled up to Selkirk from Newcastle yesterday morning - early on, no queues, no congestion. Under the new arrangements I'd still be charged, even though I wasn't causing tailbacks. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

It's just more tax on the motorist, those that can afford it will just carry on as normal, those, like myself, that have no choice, (field service engineer on equipment that requires an annual service by law), will just have to pass on the cost to the customer. This in rural Lincolnshire, only saw 2 other vehicles in my last 3 miles of travel this morning, is nothing more or less than ridiculous! Another not so stealth tax by the man who would be king, sorry PM

Well Tony's going to send all the signatories an email telling them why they are wrong. That's nice isn't it? After that you will understand. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

You haven't read his email yet! I'm sure he is writing a personal response to everyone.
