UKIP members have had their foster children removed as they belong to the party. Unbelievable

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20474120

-------------------

So if the Foster family withdraw membership of UKIP, would they be allowed to keep the kids?

It does seem to be a very odd decision and, I would think, upsetting for the children to be uprooted yet again and re-settled elsewhere. They were reportedly happy with the couple.

The enquiry will be interesting. I wonder if this case will have any effect on Thursday's by-election? I've never voted for UKIP but I hope they give the Labour lot a big shock!

Probably not but they shouldn't have to do that anyway.

I have to say from personal experience having attended a few by-election counts I've always found the UKIP people to be the friendliest, down to earth and approachable of the lot.
I've never found any of them to be remotely racist, they come from all walks of life. I've never voted for them but after this I might do now.

This really worries me, there really is only a very fine line between this and removing children from their natural parents because of their political views, it needs nipping in the bud now.

I don't know many details of this case but wasn't the reason given for removing them that the children concerned were of mixed race and the council, rightly or wrongly, thought that the foster parents political views could impact on their treatment of the children?

I thought the kids were Polish, and it wasn't a permanent fostering, just a temporary/emergency; just an appalling situation that deserved a news story so that Rotherham have to explain.

The children were from Europe as far as I can gather and the foster parents were actually encouraging them to speak in their native language which certainly does not suggest that their political views in any way impaired their ability to provide a good home environment

Once the authorities start removing children simply because of political views they may dislike we are going down a very dangerous road and quite frankly I don't think anyone should be prevented from adopting or fostering whatever political party they may support or belong to provided they otherwise meet the right criteria

Really though I can't honestly say that I'm surprised at this ludicrous decision
because as I have said many times on this forum most social workers simply do not live in the real world and remove children when there is absolutely no reason to do so yet fail to act in cases where there have been many warning signs of a serious problem

Also there is far too much emphasis placed on cultural aspects when considering fostering or adoption issues and the number one priority should be to get as many children as possible into decent homes irrespective of racial or cultural differences - this whole obsession with cultural issues only serves to perpetuate a divided society when everyone living in Britain should be aspiring to traditional British values and not to those of some country on the other side of the world Rolling Eyes

The British values I'm proudest of are tolerance and generosity of spirit - and I hope these are more than just British values.

Which is exactly why the powers that be in this country must avoid blatent discrimination against individuals whose political views they might dislike or disagree with Sad

I agree Toggy, and with Ruddles in that the most important factor is to get them into decent homes even if it's just a temporary measure.

Back in 2006 David Cameron had to retract his comments - by calling all UKIP members a bunch of racists, fruitcakes and loonies whilst doing a phone in on LBC.

I've just been reminded of the couple who were told they could not foster because they were vegans and another couple who could not foster because the gentleman smoked 2 cigars a week.

In the end it's always the kids that suffer. Sad

It certainly seems some odd decisions are made - perhaps not all the facts in these particular cases are made public.

I think it will be a close run thing this time, Respect & UKIP are gaining support.
MacShane has to be one of the most insufferably smug politicians I have ever seen, odious man.

Social workers are never praised when they get the decision right but of course are always criticised when they get it wrong.

And they certainly got this one wrong. The couple seem to be very respectable and they have fostered before. To take the children away from them smacks of ethnic cleansing in reverse, political correctness at its worse, to be expected in somewhere like China.

I hope Labour get a good kicking at the by-election, though with their current big majority it won't happen.

Yes, the expense fiddling McShane is an odious scumbag, who got away with the usual slap on the wrist.
