Well, what Joey did is what I did, or found myself doing whenever I was in Europe and spending significant time talking English to Europeans.

My missus used to laugh at me but when I was a jet-setting manager for a multi-national I was doing 'the French accent' for over 20 years and it was an effective way of communicating particularly when I was standing up addressing a room full of people from several countries.

I had a strong Scottish accent up until about 1988, but after years of travelling, and some time living in USA, working with many nationalities, it became a transatlantic Billy Connolly accent, but I still fall into a 'French' accent in foreign company.

I don't know about phoney French accents but on several occasions I've conversed with friends in French in several pubs in North Wales when locals have criticised my lack of Welsh language skills

It doesn't half annoy them in my experience Very Happy
