Radio 4

If you enjoyed the film I think you would enjoy this production of the Willy Russell play, repeated from a couple of years ago, with Bill Nighy as Frank and Laura Dos Santos as Rita

Back in 1983, I was keen plane spotter and used to hang out a lot at Dublin Airport's terminal (not much security in those days).

I was there the day they shot the sequence which is shown at the end of the film where Rita is saying goodbye to Michael Caine at the airport as she departs on a some sort of student summer camp.

I also saw a train parked at Dublin's Pearse Street train station painted up in 1980s British Rail livery. It made me do a double take because you would never see a BR train in Ireland.
Back then, all trains in the Republic were operated by CIE and were essentially painted orange and black. And even the trains from Northern Ireland were operated by Northern Ireland Railways.
It was a CIE train which had been loaned to the film company and painted up in BR livery for just one sequence in "Educating Rita".

Finally, my best friend was a student at Trinity Colege Dublin and he walked into the college one warm Summer's morning in 1983 to find the quad completely filled with snow. It was artificial snow for "Educating Rita".

Hello eric

I loved the end scene from it in the airport and the music that played at the same time ...did you ever see the film?

Quite a few times over the years. I think now, looking back, it has an air of condescension about it which doesn't seem quite right and comes across as a bit patronising.

It's of its time.
