She is probably not too happy about the Mirror puting it on their front page anyway. Every suicide bomber in the Middle East will now be buying a ticket to Basra. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Hi ernie..i agree there is a big incentive for the bombers now.
This should not have been made public yet.
God forbid anything happens to him but can you imagine the outcry you would get _________________ The Voice of reason in a MAD MAD world |

Well you probably wouldnt want to be in the same unit as him either, so its not only Harry they are putting at risk. He should have joined the Navy _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

This is all rubbish I doubt they would allow the next person to the throne on front line duty. I think he will go out there, at least it will save a little money on protecting him at home. |

They did in the Falklands Mark.
Prince Andrew was second in line to the throne then, and flew sorties over enemy aircraft.
Why wouldn't they allow him? He's there to do a job, just like any other soldier.

What's the point of joining the Army if you don't want to engage in combat with the enemy.
He has chosen this career path and i only hope he is OK> _________________ The Voice of reason in a MAD MAD world |

He flew Sea King HAS.5 helicopters with 820 NAS onboard HMS Invincible during the Falklands War. The squadron was tasked with anti-submarine duties in support of the Fleet, but also undertook SAR and load-lifting duties. I think he'd not long qualified as a pilot and was a co-pilot for most, if not all missions he flew in the South Atlantic. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

You might be right there Mark, but the point was that even though he was second in line to the throne, he was involved in the Falklands war.

I'm sorry, but what does it really matter if he goes or someone else does - what difference does it make??? |

Probably because (with the exception of Prince Andrew) it's a long time since our princes, kings and queens have had to go to the 'sharp end' of things. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

The Duke of Kent was killed in the second world war, he was on active service.
Prince Philip was in the navy during the war as well.
There hasn't exactly been many wars since has there??

Duke of Kent - killed when the Sunderland flying boat he was travelling to Iceland in crashed into the side of a hill in Caithness. You could argue this wasn't on active service.
Prince Philip was still Greek back then, wasn't he? I think he had given up his Greek and Danish titles to serve in the RN. He did see active service in the Med and in the Far East. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

You nit-picking here Cherisky?? Us Geordies have to stick together you know!
The Duke of Kent was Air Vice-Marshal during the second world war. So he was serving in the Royal Air Force. Does that not count as he wasn't actually flying sorties himself?
Prince Philip may have been still Greek then, but he's been a member of our Royal Family for 60 years!

No, I never nit-pick. Just adding a little information to what you'd posted already.
Going back to my original post, what I meant was it's not as if our princes, kings, etc., have to actually take up a sword and lead the charge any more. They're not expected to, any contribution they make is lost in the overall scheme of things. In days of yore, the contribution was rather more significant. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
