Come on, now, Colin, be honest....

You're very unlikely to hear that on any radio station, even your beloved Caroline, except at the dead of night, and then only if the DJ wants to encourage the slashing of wrists.

Wow - fantastic! I haven't heard that for years because I only have it on vinyl. Of course, what this (on YouTube) doesn't give a feel for is the psychedelic lighting and surround sound effects that Brown took on tour. It was a superb experience - perhaps aid by the stuff that generated a distinct whiff in the air.

Thanks for providing that link - even if I can't understand why people uploaded music to YouTube and then feel disposed to create boring visuals. Arthur Brown's original liquid light show would have been much better.

By the way, Radio Caroline would play this and I seem to recall that they featured a whole range of material from Arthur Brown's career not that long ago.

Anyway, thanks for the memories. Wonderful to hear something different!

Tony had a hernia operation on Monday so get well soon Tony. He'll be back Live on Pick Of The Pops this week as usual.

Thank God he'll be back to present another POTP, rather than that dreadful 70s best sellers thing that took place last time he was ill a few months ago--all that Saturday Night Fever / Grease rubbish.

I think 75 and 87 are recorded today as Tony is in Vegas and went to see Sir Elton at Caesars Palace.

Enjoyed the show today although the pre 1962 stuff was pretty dire as I expected

What I can't quite work out is how they are going to deal with 2012 quite simply because until 31st December or possibly even after that we won't know what will be the number one selling track of the current year

Am I missing something or can anyone offer an explanation Confused

Radio 2 are quite right to celebrate 60 years of the charts, but I really wonder what the point is of playing just the number one selling singles of each year.
Number ones are notoriously naff (Shuddupa You Face) and merely reflect the mostly dreadful tastes of the Great British record buying public. And they seldom reflect the music of the times. For example 1965 was represented by the appalling Tears by Ken Dodd and 1967 by the turgid Release Me by Englebert, all this in the era of mods and rockers and psychedelia. And the 70s were represented by the Bay City Rollers and Boney M!
Programmes like this are produced by lazy people, for lazy people.

I like psychedelia and the mod stuff. I also recognise that Tears is a lovely ballad, and very well sung, and that people of my parent's age, who bought records in the 50's, have as much right to be represented as I do. So is Release Me, for that matter. Variety being the spice, and all that.

Wonder if we'll be trated to the delights of Mr Blobby, Tellytubbies or Barbie Girl. I suppose it's all down to taste. My three most disliked records are all monster sellers and at the top of most other peoples list so what would I know?

Since I haven't heard a top forty type programme for decades I have no idea of what was the top selling record in the last twenty years and care less. Spice Girls, Oasis for the nineties I suppose and an awful lot of Cowell Crap for th noughties

A good chart for the first hour of this week's POTP, 1965. Missed the second hour so can't comment on that.

Fabulous chart from this week in 1963, culminating with the double A side no1 from Cliff, Bachelor Boy and The Next Time. Good ones from Bobby Vee, Chris Montez, and the Tornadoes.

This was when I first started to like 'pop' music! Can remember everyone singing Bobby's Girl by local NE girl Susan Maughan!

I thought both chart offerings today were fairly mediocre

I'm afraid the early part of 1963 does nothing at all for me although I don't mind the second half of that year so much once the new age of the Beatles had arrived and pop music had changed for the better

As for Bobby's Girl it's OK but it always reminds me of my former next door neighbour attempting to sing it at karaoke - she had a gift for murdering almost everything she attempted Laughing

I think I'm right in saying that it was actually a cover version of a track originally released in America but I could be wrong

It was a cover, the internet radio station I listen to (GoodTime Oldies 181fm) plays it fairly frequently, but I can't remember who sang it.

There was definitely a shift in the type of music that made the charts during 63, but I like the mix of the 2 halves.

I enjoyed hearing 'It Only Took A Minute' by Joe Brown. This was the first record my parents bought me as a young boy, though I believe it was really bought for the B side which was Joe's interesting take on the hymn tune 'All Things Bright & Beautiful'.

Must give it another listen Becky. I've got an album of his and I'm sure it's on that.

When he said Bobby Vee I half expected The Night Has A Thousand Eyes which I remember from that time. They must have released singles a lot closer together in those days!

Think you're right there,Helen ...sometimes artistes had a few songs in the Hit Parade at the same time back then.

I enjoyed 1963 much more than I thought I would.

The Mel Torme song was a classic, way ahead of its time. And I love 'He's A Rebel' by The Crystals. Mind you, anything produced by Phil Spector is good.

The 1962 edition of this has now been released! Thankfully they haven't repeated their mistakes from last year regarding sound quality.

Loved hearing most of the songs from 1958

Heard a couple from the start of the second year and Dusty Springfield's "Nothing Has Been Proved" was played ...what a gorgeous voice she had ...

By coincidence there is a play I have posted about on the "What other radio do you listen to?" thread with Mandy Rice Davies looking back on the events of the Profumo affair.

I don't usually bother with the second half of Tony's programme but did last Saturday and loved hearing The Streak from Ray Stevens ....always makes me smile when he says "Don't Look, Ethel!" Laughing

Was my Track of the Day on Saturday but it's too late for that thread!

Really enjoyed the vinyl POTP this lunchtime, 66 especially. Was busy sewing at the time so just the thing to spur me on!

Amusing how some listeners actually thought it was the 'final' show Laughing

Did they really think that or was it just another of Tony's dubious jokes? - perhaps he could have a whole new career advertising hearing aids Smile

I too enjoyed 1966. I didn't hear 1976 but looking at the music played I'm glad I didn't. Truly the worst year ever in pop history.

great chart from Aug 1964. Brought back memories of a holiday in Blackpool with my Mum (I was 12). Loads of the groups were doing summer season there. I think we saw the Searchers at the Winter Gardens.

Loved the Merseybeats' version of Wishin' and Hoping.

Yes I agree - great memories

Funny how we all associate the music of any era with events in our lives - those records played today brought back vivid memories of me getting my first ever cat - we found him as a kitten scared stiff and hiding in a hedge next to the East Lancashire Road near where I was brought up - a very busy road and then the only route linking Liverpool and Manchester - no M62 in those days Smile

For me they were such great days and the music just seemed so exciting to a nine year old like me

1964 was the first time I really became obsessed with pop music. It was the year when British music took over the world (well, the US and UK anyway) and the Beatles, Stones, Animals etc dominated (ironically doing covers of old American songs). With the introduction of TOTP and Ready Steady Go it was hard to escape from it.

It was a good day today for A Hard Days Night, played on both POTP and SOTS!

Yesterday's POTP from 1974 had some fabulous songs, though it was a pity Gary Shearston's I Get A Kick Out Of You wasn't played. Instead they had rubbish by The Wombles and The Bay City Rollers.

Ruddles won't be pleased that yet again The Glitter Band were left out, despite the song going up two places. It had no connection with Gary Glitter so should have been played. The sanctimonious patronising BBC at its worst. They should not tell us what we should or shouldn't listen to.

Couldn't believe it when Tony just glossed over the track with a mere mention.

Me neither - although I enjoyed hearing the Sparks track which rarely gets played anywhere these days

Don't get me started on the ludicrous 'Glitter Band' situation - it's probably the greatest example of BBC nannying because they quite simply think their listeners are so stupid that they can't recognise the difference between the Glitter Band and GG himself Rolling Eyes

I have lost some confidence in Pick Of The Pops. Looking at the 'music played' page, I see that he's once again concentrated most on his favourite genre - soul. OK, one or two soul tracks would be alright, but wouldn't it make for a more interesting show if there were tracks from other 1970s genres like rock, punk, new wave etc as well. I think it would.

Trouble is that most of the decent stuff being produced in the 70s didn't feature in the Top 20. The 70s was a crap decade for singles, let's be honest. Until punk exploded in 76/77, the best music was album-based (as least, it was where I was sitting).

It was a very good year as you say, Helen. Tony didn't play Hedgehoppers Anonymous' It's Good News Week though, a pity as it's a very good song. Of course it's really Jonathan King, hence the decision I presume, like last week and Gary Glitter.
JK is a particularly disgusting individual but I still think his songs should still be played. Again, Auntie knows best.

It's getting to be stupid now isn't it? I had (it's still in the loft I think) It's Good News Week on a 45!

I was thinking ahead to Christmas the other day and wondering if Ed Stewart would be doing his usual show. They won't be able to play Rolf Harris's 2 Little Boys now will they?

I was amazed how many of the tracks I actually had on 45s from this chart. Maybe I got some for Christmas presents as I wouldn't have been able to afford them with pocket money alone.

I too have the original of It's Good News Week somewhere in the house, along with so many other singles not played in years. I haven't got The Fortunes' Here It Comes Again which is a great song so it's nice to hear that again.
Highlight for me was The Animals' It's My Life.
