Mum-in-law moved in with us on Saturday- she was born in 1921, ( that's Downton Abbey era) she's as fit as a lop and completely on the case:- upon moving in with a lifetime collection of junk, she said, as I looked at the enourmous pile, it's not all bad my dear, I come with a free TV Licence!

A word of advice Rach - by all means make the most of her free TV Licence but don't go trying to use her bus pass Laughing

I think I'll be getting on the train to London more often , Rudds but that will be to escape mother in law from time to time.
I could always get a blue rinse

Mum and I have been out for ladies that breakfast, mum knocked over a bookstand in waterstones, they'd only just finished putting the books on it. It was fun picking up all the books, not to mention getting to chat to the chap in there. How come I've not noticed him before? Wow! I may keep a diary of our adventures. Me and mum that is, not me and the chap in waterstones...although I'd wager the latter might make better reading.

That'll teach them not to stack books where they'll be in the way - I did think they had got out of that habit when TW left.

But as you found, obstacles can hide gems Cool

We'd caused so much fuss I felt that we should buy some books, I asked the chap at the till ( the same one) if getting customers to feel guilty about wrecking the shop was a marketing ploy.... he tried to sell me a pen which was also a spirit level! How many times, I enquired, have you been writing something and thought ... oh, is this desk level?

Very pleased to see that you've actually spelled 'Waterstones' correctly Rach - most of their signage is wrong because it includes a superfluous apostrophe

I wrote to their Chief Executive pointing out the error around two years ago and received a reply telling me that the matter had been noted and would be addressed in the near future - and it mentioned as to whether I had ever participated in the television series 'Grumpy Old Men' Shocked

I didn't deem it appropriate to dignify their impertinence with a reply - but I was tempted to say that most of the people on their are simply acting grumpies rather than being genuinely grumpy in real life Smile

Yes, the name of the company is now Waterstones without the apostrophe - which they dropped to make it "more versatile and practical for the digital world" in January last year.

The chain originally belonged to Sir Tim Waterstone, and the apostrophe was grammatically correct. Once he sold it (to WH Smith - it has since been through HMV's hands and is now with a Russian billionaire) I suppose it did become superfluous. The capital letter isn't, though Wink

Not such a daft idea as it sounds. How often have you put a pen down somewhere, to see it roll off and fall to the floor because the table has a list? The spirit level might be superfluous (cos you'll know the table's not level) but the pen won't be totally round, so it won't roll away. (What it's like to write with in such a shape is quite another thing.)

Ah the old claxton of pedantry :- I have a tablet pc thing now, it has a touch screen keyboard , it’s a nightmare!

Rudds , you’ve made the classic mistake of making a mistake in a post about mistakes. Smile I like that.

Oh I dunno Ron , here's the thing: pens that do other things or indeed any thing that does other things that you would normally need another thing for usually only ever get used for the main thing they are and the one time in your life you need it for one of the other things it does, you can’t find the thing or it's been so long since it was used, the bloomin' thing doesn't work!

Ah - but I might have done it deliberately Rach just to see whether anyone actually noticed Smile
