Why couldn't they just play some or all of the original tracks?

Typical BBC to think they could go one better. Not impressed. Evil or Very Mad Stereophonics sounded like the Mavericks doing I Saw Her Standing There and a woman murdered There's A Place on Ken Bruce. I know her name but she doesn't deserve the association to the Fab Four's first album.

I agree totally Helen!

There are some excellent songs on the album and they should simply be played as such, rather than be badly covered.

Don't really know what it's supposed to demonstrate, one group -whole album= hard work but lots of artist doing one each - so what?

I've switched off for most of the day as it was just annoying me. Left radio on after 7pm news and at least Jo Whiley played Twist and Shout from the album it was great. It's been like trying to create a tribute band, why??

All I can say is that I'm so glad I grew up listening to the Beatles and saw them when I was 11, something I'll never forget. The folk who are raving about today's performances are easily pleased.

I thought it was all rather good, especially the Jo Whiely bit.

I think they should have restricted coverage to asking people who were around in the sixties about their memories interspersed with playing tracks from the original album

None of the cover versions were much above mediocre perhaps with the exception of Beverley Knight whose effort was at least half decent Sad

It was OK, certainly better than the Sgt Pepper reconstruction a few years ago, which was quietly laid to rest as a better idea in theory than in reality.

Joss Stone murdered Till There Was You, as only she can, and I Am Kloot and took a predictably indie approach to Chains. Gabrielle Aplin's folky reading of There's A Place was a surprise. Otherwise they sounded like a pub band or buskers, probably not far removed from what The Beatles sounded like before George Martin polished and added a few twiddly bits.

I didn't hear Joss Stone sing "Till there was you" but did hear her performance of "A Taste of Honey" and thought she made a pretty good job of it. Perhaps it helped that it wasn't an original Beatles song.

Idiot that I am, I meant A Taste of Honey. Well it was one o'clock in the morning.

I just can't stand all that warbling, a la Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
It ruins a perfectly good song.

I didn't hear much of it but as I drove home today listening to Wrighty, I heard that fellow from Squeeze and Paul Jones....

Terrible. Rolling Eyes

My opinion ....Smile

"I Saw Her Standing There" Not a bad effort by The Stereophonics.......enjoyed watching their drummer on the documentary tonight on BBC Four

"Misery" Rather liked this version by Paul Carrack *

"Anna (Go to Him)" Nobody can beat the Arthur Alexander version of this, imo, not even the Fab Four so there wasn't much hope for Mick H

"Chains" I thought the I Am Kloot* boys took this and brought their I Am Klootish style to it in a very stylish way.

"Boys" - Okay from The Merseybeats

"Please Please Me" - This was missing a vital part for me ...and you all know what it is if you have heard it ..love you lots,Chris and Glenn (and you,Paul) but this didn't work for me

"Baby It's You" - Graham Coxon*did a very nice version of this but this is another song from the album where I prefer the original by The Shirelles over all others

"Do You Want to Know a Secret - I liked this version by Ian Broudie* (my favourite version of this is by Billy and the boys)

"A Taste of Honey" - Not keen on Joss Stone's style...this didn't work for me.

"There's a Place" - A very pleasing,sweet version of this from Gabrielle*

"Twist and Shout"- Not a bad effort from Beverley.

I wonder what Paul and Ringo make of this collection of covers...would be interesting to hear their true views on them

The ones I've starred are the ones I would go back and listen again to and being the enormous Fab Four fan that I am that is huge praise ....and I can't say fairer than that!

Enjoyed them all a little bit more (with the exception of Joss Stone) watching them all perform on the documentary on BBC Four, which is well worth a look. Smile

Hearing and seeing them on tonight's TV programme was much better, even Joss Stone.

I know it was less "raw" but the sound had benefitted from some post production and mixing. The Stereophonics, Difford & Tilbrook and Merseybeats still sounded like a pretty poor pub covers band though.

I liked Mick Hucknall, Paul Carrack and thought the Stereophonics were OK.

Did not like Difford and Tillbrook at all.

Though it pains me to say it, the Difford/Tilbrook/Jones version of Please Please Me, was so bad..the low point, being every single note that Chris sang. I've sice realised, that the only person whose harmonies(?!?!) his gruntings remotely resemble, is Chesney Allen, except I like hearing Ches.

I thought Gabrielle Aplin's There's A Place was beautiful, Graham Coxon's Baby It's You, enjoyable - he gave it everything he had, despite not being the greatest singer in the world, he more than did it justice. Stereophonics, Mick Hucknall, even Joss Stone, all pleasant enough, the rest probably best avoided..Kloot at least tried a different take, but the best part of that, was John Bramwell's headphones falling over his eyes. Their new album is great, though.

But when all's said and done... a dodgy Beatle tribute album programme is better than none at all, if only to show just how good they were.
