For Comic Relief

Radio Today

Quote:
Comedians French and Saunders are to take over BBC Radio 2 for an entire day, in aid of the BBC’s Comic Relief charity appeal on March 15th.

They’ll pop up during all the regular programmes, along with the usual presenters, asking listeners to donate money and causing mayhem.

Station controller Bob Shennan said: “What better way to celebrate Red Nose Day’s 25th anniversary than to hand the Radio 2 reins over to two of this country’s greatest comedy legends.”

The station will also broadcast a concert organised by Russell Brand on March 6th. He was a presenter on the station until that incident with Jonathan Ross in 2008.

BBC Radio 6 Music is also joining in the fund-raising, with Simpsons voice Harry Shearer and comedian Kathy Burke creating shows for the digital network.

On March 15th breakfast presenter Shaun Keaveny will host his show from the BBC Radio Theatre and welcome various guests including actor Adam Buxton and comedian Tim Vine.

That's a good reason not to listen at all that day.............. I hardly listen much anyway these days so it won't be a hardship!

Problem is they'll be trailing it for at least the rest of the week and then telling you to listen again on iPlayer the following week. Sad

Does anyone really believe anything that Shennan says?

The truth is he says whatever is in the interests of Bob Shennan at the time and hopes the R2 audience is so thick not to notice when he's talking c--p - which seems to be most of the time Rolling Eyes

It doesn't surprise me in the least, but it saddens me a great deal, what has happened to R2, ever since Jim Moir left the station in the uncapable hands of Lesley Douglas. Shennan seems to be even worse..which I'd have thought impossible.

I was just thinking the same thing myself this morning Raver! I suppose we had the good days, but I never thought things would get as bad as they are.

I listen a lot to internet radio now and found a good station, 181.fm which has several genres under the same roof. I like the GoodTime Oldies one and often have it on my radio for an hour or so when R2 isn't that good.

PS there is also a Beatles only part to 181.fm Very Happy

I'm hoping to catch some of those.

Maybe we misunderstood and he said he wanted to attract more 6-5 year olds.

On Twitter today there was a video of French and Saunders going through R2 presenters promo photo card things: guessing who each of them were ... twas quite funny, not side-splittingly funny but I did smile a little but only a little... no Alex though , so no £5. Well, not for that anyway.... perhaps the rumours are true ... Alex is leaving R2 at the end of April.... I'm not sure if that's good or bad.... a day time show somewhere else would be good.

I'm not a fan of comic relief or Red Nose Day or whatever it's called, it goes on far too long and it's just not funny It feels like it's been comic relief for weeks now...where are the real comedians? Kate Thornton doing the plank on a train, isn't funny. Maybe I'm just old, bitter and twisted with a dash of ugly but I'm just not getting the funny part? Off on holiday tomorrow for another 3-weeks - so thankfully I'll miss it, well I won't but you know what I mean.

Rachel I thought it was just me who wasn't a fan of Comic Relief, so somewhat relieved to find it's not. I've hardly listened to R2 for nearly a couple of weeks for one reason or another, especially if I've known there was to be Comic Relief input. Next week it will be 'dodge the iPlayer trails'..........

Have a nice holiday, where are you off to?

The red button trails are already running, Helen. After reading about it on Wikipedia and other places, it turns out that, being a charity with highly paid employees and executives as well as a massive investment fund, it's not a charity that fits with my ethos for giving. So now I have another reason not to like it.

We're off to France for the first week, Cornwall for the second week, then I'm off to Northumberland on my own in the third week.. to see my family. I hope the weather improves. Smile

I can't help wondering if there aren't too many of these extravaganzas now. Wasn't it the sports version last year (The one when David Walliams swam the length of the River Thames?) And then every November we get Children In Need. The average man / woman in the street only has so much they can afford to give.

I think he meant to attract French and Saunders. Surely they must be that old by now. They seem to have been hanging around since Noah was a lad. I suppose they might make me laugh one day.

I don't actually mind CR too much (apart from F&S obviously. Oh, and Hart) At least it's only every couple of years, unlike CiN which, in the words of Drax in Moonraker, appears with the tedious inevitablilty of an unloved season.
