There is a piece on the BBC website(Scotland)about a GP who helped three of his patients commit suicide. He was not prosecuted as it was not in the public's interest.

There is a big question over asissted suicide and i don't know if it's right or wrong.I am 42 now and i hope i have a few more years in me but i look at my dad who is 75 and his quality of life after suffering a stroke last year is not good.In his place how would i feel?

Well, there are at least two ways as to how you look at this...

Is one in a reasonable state of health but very lonely? or,
in a particularly bad health/movement situation which restricts a reasonable lifestyle.. possibly placing a burden on the family or friends..

If in good health but living alone, I think it very much depends on whether you have family or good friends around with you at that time...

Personally speaking, I'm pretty sure if I were to reach my mid 80s and had lost my wife and dog, I wouldn't want to be around so if a quick escape were available, I'd take it. I have few friends and no family so life would be grim as I'd be hopeless on my own ( like many men ).

If I ended up hardly being able to breath or move, I think I'd want out too..

Of course I see this kind of situation everyday and, although not great, life in a (decent ) care home with company etc, could be the answer for some but, I wouldn't want to be here without my wife or Newfie.. Razz

Everyone should have the right to choose to end their own life

The problem is putting in place adequate safeguards to prevent greedy relatives of elderly people unduly influencing them to end their lives

Despite those problems I still believe that a system could be put in place as happens in some other countries Sad
