I was watching great railway journeys with Michael Portillo on Friday and one of the places he visited was Saltzburg.
I thought it looked lovely and it's really made me want to visit one day.

Just wondered of anybody from here had been there and if so what advice do you offer.

By the way I didn't mean I was with Michael Portillo watching railway journeys. Laughing

Hi Toggy,

We watched the Railway Journeys and it brought back a lot of memories as I went to Austria and Salzburg in the late 60s. I loved it as of course the Sound of Music hadn't that long been out! My Mum and I were on a coach tour which had a week in St Wolfgang which isn't too far away and we took the boat to Bad Ischl and St Gilgen which I think both featured in the programme (?).

It's somewhere I'd like to re-visit, not sure if my O/H would like it though!

Did you see the Swiss episode? I'd also been to Lucerne and Fluelen on one of the same type of steamers. Another place I'd like to re-visit as I was only 10 when we went there. The wooden covered bridge in Lucerne was a favourite to walk across and I'd love to see it again although I believe there has been at least one fire but it has since been restored.

Thanks for that, sounds like it's worth a visit then, it won't be until next year at the earliest though.

I do like railway journeys, I think Portillo is actually a decent presenter who seems like a nice enough fella.
I wish though they would put it on at the same time every week, I miss them sometimes (but there's always iPlayer I suppose)

I think you'll enjoy it Toggy! I always put Railway Journeys on series record and save them for when there's nothing on or an odd half hour or so to fill in.

My memory of Austria is going there in the late sixties with the school and paying - shock horror - the equivalent of £1 for a cup of coffee and thinking to myself - I wouldn't want to live here as it's far too expensive

A great programme featuring a good presenter nevertheless but I do prefer the British ones Smile

Salzburg is a beautiful city. Try to find a hotel on the river looking towards the castle and opposite the old town.

I did find that the authorities overdid the whole Mozart thing though.
