Chris playing Maggie May this morning reminded me of the bad old days when Wogan used to play that song every other day. I'm glad we've moved on from that.

Just goes to prove what I have always said - both are equally bad presenting a breakfast show Smile

I enjoyed the interview with Michael Palin yesterday, quite liked Michael Vaughan too until he started going on about bloomin' strictly. Rolling Eyes

Well at least he didn't say he'd been molested by a deceased former DJ.

To be fair Strictly is probably more relevant - more people watch one episode of that than they get in a whole season of English cricket, where in any case the only talking point (KP) is a minefield. C'est la vie

I'm not saying it's not relevant I just don't want to hear about it all the time. Laughing
I used to get annoyed with Terry going on about Masterchef all the time, although in this case I do enjoy watching it.

Seemed a bit rude to Palin to me - he's surely got enough of a career and reputation to be able to get a solo interview by now? If James Nesbitt can be on his own for a show, so can the former Python. All Vaughan was there for was to plug Strictly - and every other BBC show does that already!

If you don’t like Chris Evans, this being the third birthday of his show, should be good news. Yay! Very Happy Chris hasn’t done anything for more than five years- ever: so you could say he has only ( more than half way folks) two years left of the Breakfast Show, Yay- Very Happy with two months off, each year, that’s only 20 months- 600 days ish but 80 weekends is 160 days – so just 440 shows to go: could even be fewer than that… who knows? That’s a small enough number to start a shows to go chart! Yay! Cross another one off. Smile On the other hand, if like me, you do like Chris Evans you could be thinking, 3 years in and he hasn't messed up yet, this bodes well for breaking the five year record, if there is such a thing ( I made up that 5-year fact… it helps with the argument but it must be near to being true so lets just go with it.) Maybe if we’re lucky and he doesn’t die of an excess of personality (or red wine) then he might get to ten years of doing the breakfast show:- I hope. Yay!

Probably two years since I ever tuned into Chris Evans show! So is it a case of I don't know what I'm missing? I think I do know what I'm missing.

What's the music selection like these days? I might have a look at the playlists listed on the website.

Music's mostly good, John. He seems to be able to get away with playing odd stuff that other daytime shows can't.

He certainly seems more enthusiastic and inventive and generally enjoying himself more than 2 years before he left Virgin.

This morning Chris played, "There's a Coach Coming In" ... can you hear it? from Paint Your Wagon... what an earworm... it's been driving me nuts all day... I've been singing Roy Orbison songs to try to get it out of my head...

A candy coloured clown they call the sand man...
there's a coach coming in... can you hear it can you hear it.....
One look from you is all I need
There's a coach coming in... can you hear it can you hear it....
Pretty paper pretty ribbons of blue....
There's a coach coming in, can you hear it can you hear it....
My lovely woman child I found you out running wild with someone new, you've been untrue, and everybody knows we're through....... but I can't say goodbye to you...
There's a coach coming in can you hear it can you hear it...

So, was it Johnny Depp or not? Yes? No? Not sure? Cannot confirm or deny?

If you don't know the Johnny Depp story, I-player today's breakfast show. Smile

I saw Norman Lamont in Morrisons in Cheadle Heath about ten years ago, and we saw Dawn French on holiday in Cornwall, she was staying in the house next door to ours which belongs to a n other famous person... oh, and I bumped into Tom Watson MP on Westminster Bridge, he was pretending to be on his phone and completely ignored me. Oh yes and that Johnny chap from a place in the sun home or away, he was surfing on the same wave as me at Perranuthnoe in Cornwall.. we had a chat about board waxing, on the beach. And of course there was the time last year maybe the year before when Johnnie Walker came to our door to ask me to frame two pictures for him. It still bamboozles me ,why he thought I did picture framing and who told him that I do, cos I do but I don't for other peoples' pictures.
Have you met anyone famous just while you were out and about? I don't mean when you were expecting to see them just unexpected encounters.

I've met many famous people but in terms of chance encounters I can recall a couple

When I was about ten years old and on holiday with my parents in Devon we stopped in a small village - I think it was called Holne - and my dad knocked on a door thinking the residents did accomodation but much to our surprise the door was answered by the then Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Michael Ramsey who was also on holiday

In the mid seventies I was sitting in a car overlooking the bay in Harlech North Wales when a posh car pulled up alongside and the occupant was none other than Roy Jenkins dressed in white flannels wearing waders and with his colleagues he duly ran across the mudflats presumably to view the extensive birdlife there Smile

We came across Harry Enfield and family in Polzeath a couple of years ago. Heard him before we saw him - he was "parking" his family at a restaurant before going off to surf. One of them was an slightly older chap (not his dad, a brother perhaps?) and mum-in-law chatted to him - he was obviously the person Enfield based "You don't want to do it like that" on.

Keith Barron stopped me in the street one dank December day and asked the way to the Theatre Royal, where he was to appear in a play the following week. He was walking in the wrong direction and it was such a pity that it wasn't the pantomime, cos I would have been able to say "It's behind you"

I have bumped into David Jacobs and shaken his hand, but he's unlikely to remember it - I was nine at the time. And round about the same time I was in the car with dad when Lonnie Donegan pulled up behind us at a petrol station and turned the air blue.

Literally bumped into Peter Kay in the loos at Bolton Cineworld. I said hello, he said hello back... thing is, I just thought he was a mate, and it was only afterwards that I realised he was off the telly.

My girlfriend once met Marc Almond when he arrived in Preston for a gig and asked her where a good record shop was.

Cool beans. The thing I've found with some famous folk is how just like everyone else they are when they switch off and be themself. I like that, even if being themself means they're cold and distant, nervous or anxious, shy, even.

This morning Chris started with a Blondie track(call me)- you know it's gonna be a good day when that happens.

Very Happy

In the 80s while on holiday in Portugal with my family we met Cliff Richard in a local restaurant one evening and Neil Kinnock and his family at a village festival the next night. The Kinnocks were very friendly and when we commented on the fact that their teenage children were on holiday with them they replied that, as in many other families, they were happy to come along as it meant a free holiday. I met Jarvis Cocker and Damon Albarn in the bar at the Barbican but they had just been in a concert there.

Met Honar Blackman recently at the Royal Festival Hall, in the bar after the main event-she was the narrator for a James Bond themed evening.

Very interesting lady-full of life, energy etc.

So instead of Zoe standing in for Chris this am, Richard filled her shoes instead.

The world is a better place when Richard is broadcasting to the nation.

Great way to start the day.

I was glad I'd left my radio on R2 last night instead of switching over to Smooth or an internet station or I'd have missed Richard.

Great to hear him!

I missed Richard as I didn't know he was on but I still think that Simon Bates takes a lot of beating as a breakfast presenter but I would have listened had I known - is he on again tomorrow? Smile

I prefer to have a cuddle up to the missus before getting out of bed, a cup of coffee and some toast and cereal instead of having my ears bashed by any of the aforementioned.

Oh what a joy to have CE finally lose his voice after all these years only to have the bad news that Zoe was the only available replacement, then then only to find out that after she'd thrown yet another sickie that we had to suffer RA.

Just remind me how much time Ken has taken off in his R2 career? What a professional.

Chris Evans has annoyed me, I just want to shake him, however, he hasn't annoyed me on his radio show, oh no, because that continues as it always has, to be up there with the best of them. Yay! Go Chris. He has annoyed me in another way. Recently, the MoS, in a bid to save cash dressed up as, 'hey look we're doing something new and different just for you', have combined their weekly review paper ( which was really quite good) and their Live Magazine( which was - well, readable in parts)into one supplement called 'Event' or something like that. I don't like it.

Chris used to write interesting stuff in his bit at the back of Live Magazine but now he writes about (.....yawn) cars!!! What's wrong with that ? He knows about cars, doesn't he? So then, what's the problem? Fernando is faster than you! That's the bloomin' problem big boy. Ferrari. Each week Chris is given a car to test drive for a couple of days, then write about it, but so far both the reviews he's written, one on the Subaru sport thing and the other on the Vauxhall Adam, could be summed up in 4 words. " It's not a Ferrari" But here's the thing.... most people have never driven a Ferrari ( I have) and anyone in the market for a Vauxhall Adam isn't going to care much that it doesn't have the power of a Ferrari or that it handles more like a portakabin than it does a Ferrari. What they care about is cup holders: can you isolate the front air bags so you can have a baby seat on there? Does the air con work well, can you get a double buggy in the boot? Is the petrol flap easy to find and operate? What tax band is it in? What's visibility like, does it have rear parking sensors? Does it have a proper spare wheel or one of those space saver spare wheels? Chris' car reviews are a miracle! None of those questions get anywhere near being answered; it's all Ferrari Ferrari Ferrari and more Ferrari!

Look: don’t yell at me… it’s constructive criticism… I’m being helpful Smile : everyone else is terrified….
