Tonight's show is focusing on French songs, not all to be sung in French.
Comme D'habitude/My Way opened up the show. I don't think we hear enough continental songs.

What a delightful hour of music that was! ...thanks for flagging it up,Helen...I sometimes miss this programme
I would have put money on that Le Mer would have been included ...it was in a way but I would have much preferred the Charles Trenet version. |

I would agree, H, but in truth, having listened to French radio both while there on holiday and on the internet - French Radio London which plays a mix of French and English language tracks - apart from the period or vintage recordings, continental pop is (some would say depressingly) very similar to our own.

Thanks Helen, I really enjoyed it tonight - but then I usually do!
Becky, I too would have preferred Charles Trenet's La Mer. By the way, am I alone in always confusing Charles Trenet with Jean Sablon? |

It is now Ron, but back in the 60s and 70s French radio had to play a much larger preportion of French tracks by law than they probably do now. Of course popular songs were covered in French by their own artists. Richard Anthony, Claude Francois just 2 names that come to mind.

Desmond did another 50s special last night. I didn't hear it but the playlist looks good, Dickie Valentine was featured Eileen!
Will give it a 'listen back' later on.

First up on Desmond's programme last night was Garden Party a song by Rick Nelson which is a personal recollection of an experience he had in 1972.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_Party_%28Rick_Nelson_song%29
I was surprised therefore to hear that someone else had made it and that Des chose to play that version over the one by Rick ...I suppose the sentiments heard in the song are not unique to just one rock star,still.....
Nice version of Across The Universe by Barbara Dickson. |

Tonight's show is a tribute to David Jacobs. Some bits of a joint broadcast from what Desmond has just said.

Anyone listening to Desmo? It's a tribute to David Jacobs when the two of them co-presented a programme 27 years ago to celebrate their 60th birthdays.
They both sound so young and delightfully full of fun - they never changed .
Glad you're listening too, Helen!
Oh, and ending with Flanagan and Allen singing "Let's Be Buddies" |

Have just listened to this and what a delight it was from beginning to end...both the music and the reminiscences of these two old friends ...as Eileen said they both sound so young.... what a couple of smoothies they are/were?
Lovely story about David, his Mum and the tannoy.
I've never heard of Radio Seac. |

Here's a very scratchy YouTube of a Radio SEAC broadcast Becky. Desmond is mentioned a couple of times and there is a postal envelope with David's picture in one corner:

... and another interesting link (with a photo of a very young Desmond):

What a delightful programme this was, and so good to hear in full a complete programme from David Jacob's lunchtime show back in 1986. To be honest I had a lump in my throat at the end and so, it seems, did Desmond. |

A very nice tribute to David Jacobs from a very sad Desmond at the beginning of tonight's programme.

Enjoying tonight's show so far.
The first track he played was 'So What's New' by Herb Alpert as it was apparently the theme for Album Time. I never heard that show but I do remember hearing it as the theme for a tea time show in the 60s. I'd hear it almost daily at home as Mum always had the radio on. Anyone else recall that show? I suppose it was the forerunner to today's 'Drive Time'.

Strange thing was that I'd no idea of its title until my Mum got a Herb Alpert album that had the track on it. Of course I recognised the tune immediately!

Wunderbar to hear again "There's a Lighthouse 'Cross the Bay" from Conrad Weidt and his "Lessie, stare-gazing".
Great memories of the Wake up to Wogan days! |

Just the programme to listen again to on a lazy Sunday, with it's theme of rest, repose and quiet.
Some lovely songs played including Skylark by Marion Montgomery . My favourite version of this is by k.d. lang. that I heard for the first time on the soundtrack of the film Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-o92_OI5OU
First up was It's Oh So Quiet, which is very much associated with Bjork,of course .... I was surprised a while back to discover this was a cover from back in the fifties sung by Betty Hutton, which was the one that Desmond played...not a lot of difference between the two!
Heard somewhere (can't rememember where ) the other day that Desmond celebrates his 89th birthday on the 23rd of this month. |

I heard the first part as it went out on Friday Becky and you're correct that it will be Desmond's birthday on 23rd May.
He mentioned it on last week's show and that he would be 89. It's remarkable that he is able to continue broadcasting from his home in Scotland. I don't listen everyweek but when I do there is always something good to hear!

I seem to remember it was someone talking about Desmond rather than him saying it himself,Helen, so I don't think it was on his programme that I heard it. |

Tonight's programme had a long feature about Val Doonican which included several songs and excerpts from an interview which Desmond did with Val about 8 or 9 years ago. It is well worth a listen and comes in the second half of the programme. |

I'm hearing from a source, who knows producer Dave Aylott, that Desmond Carrington is very unwell, so soon after his retirement from Radio Two. We might have a sad Christmas.

I do hope not John, but I share your thoughts. Even the BBC statement when he was leaving, to me, hinted of that.
As I say I hope we are wrong.

Sorry to cause anxiety and I actually I did wonder if you all would think the worst! I'm just glad that they are going to do this show while Desmond is still alive. So often tributes come too late to show how much the person was loved and appreciated by so many listeners.
