Alex Ferguson is understood to be giving serious consideration to ending his 27-year reign as Manchester United manager. There has been several reports in the media. The club is floated on the stock market and Wall street will need to be told the position, and will need to stand the story up. David Moyes and Jose mourinho have been rumoured.

Lots of heavy hearted supporters of Man United this morning as the most successful manager in British footballing history announces his retirement.

Sir Alex, who has been at the club for 26 years, said in a statement: "The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so."

Surely we will never see the like of him again.

Enjoy your retirement Sir Alex...you deserve it! ...

Not only a great manager, but just as importantly, a lucky one. We'll never see trophies and titles won on that scale again.

I hope Davie Moyes gets the job. Scotsmen and United are like love and marriage.

Of course, all this nonsense has obscured the real story today. Kenny Jackett has resigned as manager of Millwall...

Who would want the job with Mr Ferguson sitting in the boardroom sticking his oar in at every opportunity

If Davd Moyes takes the job he's a complete fool - which I've never thought about him before - just ask managers like Tommy Docherty about how their hands were tied when Matt Busby retired and went upstairs to the boardroom - they couldn't sign any players unless they had the previous managers approval which probably explains why ultimately the club got relegated in 1984 Smile

Completely agree, and can't believe they could be so stupid. Alex Ferguson is too stong a personality - not the kind of man who after all this time calling the shots could operate on the fringes without interfering - not a criticism, just a fact. It might work if he took a complete break for a year or two and then returned to the boardroom in some capacity, but otherwise it's doomed!

Six years! ...not many of them handed out.

David Moyes is very much his own man and as many football pundits were saying on the TV last night that whilst Sir Alex will be on hand should he want any advice the ultimate decision will be his and his alone and if he does indeed go to Sir Alex for advice this should be seen as a strength not a weakness.

Good luck to him!

Showed a great clip of the two of them on the TV this evening having a right go at each and David Moyes was no shrinking violet in the altercation. Shocked Very Happy

At the end of the day the truth is that the only way is down for Man United

How can anyone do better than Mr Ferguson - however well his successor does they will still be branded a failure Smile

And there's realism based on the previous history of this club - Moyes will be just the first of a whole string of managers none of whom will cut the mustard in exactly the same manner as happened after Matt Busby retired and moved upstairs to the boardroom - and just look how the club ended up 15 years later - probably a classic case of history repeating itself Smile

Very Happy

A fantastic reception (thoroughly deserved) for Sir Alex as he walked onto the pitch today at Old Trafford...he looked almost embarassed as he walked through the guard of honour.
