I must admit to gasping when I saw his name associated with such vile acts. His football reports are always entertaining.

That is correct. Although he's been formerly charged then bailed, doesn't mean he did it. This is getting spooky. I wonder how many more celebrities are waiting for that door to knock. It's very concerning matter with allegations going back years.

Me too Becky. I met him about 20 years ago at a presentation and he was very nice.

As Mark says who else will we hear about.

I do hope the Stuart Hall allegation isn't true. He did a wonderful Friday Night Is Music Night recently and it would be a shame if such a fine broadcaster's legacy is destroyed.

I've also met Stuart Hall about ten years ago and it will indeed be sad if such a genius of a man leaves a legacy of such sordid behaviour

He should be remembered for his incredible power of the English language which is always reflected in his football reports

I suppose he's almost a neighbour of yours Helen Smile

Sadly, it appears that many of the allegations were true.

Yes, I met someone working on the case recently who was convinced it was pretty open-and-shut but I still hoped it wouldn't be.

Really sad that a such a great broadcaster will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons

I will certainly miss his football reports for Five Live - clearly back in the Sixties and Seventies he must have thought that his fame rendered him untouchable - rather like a certain Mr Saville - but it just goes to show that once you fade from your former glory then suddenly you do become 'touchable' - rather an appropriate choice of words I think in Mr Hall's case Smile

Tragic that such an entertaining broadcaster should have had that dark side to his nature. Awful for his family too. I used to love his commentary and hysterical laughter on It's a Knockout but not being a football fan I never heard his Radio5 commentaries.

It is indeed Eileen, a sad end to his career.

I met him about 20 years ago.

Chris Patten was saying " The BBC might have claims for compensation against Hall " I know there is an ongoing case with Saville, but he's dead and why can't the victims make a direct civil case against Hall? There won't be a new enquiry as there is an ongoing case.. It's going to take years to clear all this up and a cloud will continue to hang over the BBC and haunt them for many years.

Well - to interpret your comments literally of course the BBC wouldn't have any claims for compensation against Hall as the BBC has not suffered any kind of loss

If you intended to suggest that aggrieved parties might have claims against the BBC simply because they employed Hall that would very much depend on whether the offences were conitted in the course of his work for the BBC or on BBC premises

As far as I understand these offences had little or nothing to do with his BBC role and were essentially a private matter so my first thought is that I very much doubt that the BBC has a problem in this case - unlike the Savile one where offences were commited on BBC premises Sad

His summary reports after football games were often astonishing in their prose and vocabulary. A talented fellow, but a sad side to his life has been revealed.

As with Savile, investigations will try to determine if he had any 'assistance' in getting time time alone with his victims. Rather than the BBC sueing Hall, likely victims may sue the BBC, and Hall.

From the report in the Independent newspaper last week (which quoted the letter that started the whole investigation) it seems "a trip to BBC Manchester to meet Stuart Hall" was the lure and how it started, but there doesn't seem to have been any underage stuff going on at BBC premises.

And whose fault is that??

What I find really sad is that he wasn't caught much earlier on in his career (first offence recorded as being in 1967) so that some of his victims could have been spared his vile practices.

This was what was said outside of court on the 7th of February of this year

May I just say these allegations are pernicious, callous, cruel and above all spurious,’

Veteran BBC broadcaster Stuart Hall has said he wants to live long enough to clear his name after being charged with a range of sexual abuse offences, as he revealed support from his family had stopped him considering suicide.

The 83-year-old former It’s A Knockout presenter spoke to reporters before heading into Preston magistrates’ court, where he was bailed until March 1, when his trial at the city’s crown court will start.

He said that his life had been a ‘living nightmare’ since charges were announced, and vowed to ‘regain my honour’.

‘The last two months of my life have been a living nightmare. I have never gone through so much stress in my life and I am finding it difficult to sustain.’

Being under so much stress didn't stop him, two weeks later, transferring ownership of his home to his wife in a deliberate attempt to avoid paying any compensation to his victims

Land Registry documents show that Hall's detached property in Wilmslow, Cheshire – said to be worth £1.2m – was placed under sole proprietorship of Hazel Hall on 22 February of this year. The transfer occurred less than a fortnight after Hall denied indecently assaulting 13 young girls, calling allegations against him "pernicious, callous, cruel and above all spurious". He has since admitted all counts.

He was without doubt a very entertaining larger than life figure that I enjoyed listening to but as Eileen said that was coupled with a dark side to his personality that has no place in any part of our society.

I hope the sentence reflects his actions

I read this recently on-line

Eight years ago when he was on 5 Live's Fighting Talk... he said ....

'Any 10-year-old can instruct you in oral or anal sex'

The comments were defended at the time by the BBC as 'satirical banter'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2013/may/02/stuart-hall-5-live-instruct-sex

An excellent article, imo, in The Telegraph by Katy Brand

I never suggested that it was anyone's fault other than his own Becky so I really don't understand your comments

But that doesn't alter the fact that to many people especially those in the North West he was still regarded as a great broadcaster and what has recently emerged is something which is shocking and makes the situation sad to many people like me

That is not in any way to excuse what he did but it is simply stating an undoubted fact - just as Mr Savile was undoubtedly an excellent presenter but clearly a dreadful human being Sad

I think this is it. I never liked Savile and always found him creepy, but Hall was always a warm and entertaining presenter on many shows I watched I liked, so this is more shocking to me.

Rhetorical questions don't really work on a forum like this though do they Becky - but I do agree that in a perfect world it would have been much better for these things to have been revealed much earlier

But there again one could say the same about Jimmy Savile Gary Glitter Jonathan King etc -it's just the way of the world that hindsight is probably the most valuable commodity Smile

Some great links and opinions from you, Becky. I never knew about the Fighting Talk remarks. Unbelievable that he got away with that.

Stuart Hall. I cracked up every time, when he was in uncontrollable (or were they) fits of laughter on Jeux Sans Frontieres (or It's A C**kout, as I can't help but think of it now)..and listened with glee, at his football reports on a Saturday afternoon. Now, he's gone down further in my estimation, than Rod Stewart...which is no mean feat.
