RA's first words after the news: "The old girl's had a better offer...."

I nearly dropped my razor! Smile

Yes the same old Allinson cliches were deployed.

PS I dont think the main purpose of the paper review is to detail the free CD's and offers available.

It's strange the first day of the london congestion charge extension, and price goes up and Richard who sounded like he pays enough towards it was on air and ranting about it. He's a good broadcaster, but does sometimes come across a little cheesy.

Again what relevance has this to most of his listeners? I wish they would stop going on about it all day. If the cost of parking in Leeds increased, would we hear Allinson, Wogan, Goodier, Vine & Wright go on about it all day?

I also saw Breakfast News, GMTV and Sky News doing live on the spot reprts from a street this morning. Jeeezz for pity sake, is this news? Cars driving down the street............

True, they all live in London or just outside and most of the time they use taxis or public transport to get to western house. Why use their cars to come up from chelsea area etc and moan about it?

Its hard to pay the charge when you only earn £500k for 2-3 hours at the office per day. I must get my violin out.

Blimey Vine has told his listeners he runs to work and wrighty and evans walk to work. London is a big city and people who live in and around it should appreciate it and use their cars when going out of the city. If I lived in London I would walk or if raining get public transport to work.

It's not as if the transport system is not working 24 hours a day.

Thing is it will effect most big cities sooner or later. It's to happen in Manchester quite soon (sorry I've forgotten the exact year) and it happens in Durham. I know we bleat on about all the stories being London based but it'll come to you if you live in or near a big city.

Hi Helen,

You're right in saying that congestion charging will affect most cities in the future. I can see Newcastle City Council just iching to put it in place here.

Am I right in saying that the charge in Durham is only limited to a single street, though (and is a dead-end)? Unless I'm mistaken (and it wouldn't be the first time!) the local council haven't yet decided to extend the system to the rest of what is a fairly small city.

I'm not certain but I thought the congestion charge was on more than one street in Durham. It's a while since I read anything about it and haven't been to there since it came into operation.

Yes we had Steve Wright & Tim Smith rabbiting on about this again in their show.

I am incresingly of the opinion that what will be reported as news is decided in advance and then given saturation coverage for 24 hours only to disappear and never be heard of again.

Unsurprisingly dissent is being quashed on the R2 MB:

Wright must live next door as I doubt he could walk more than 10 yards without having a heart attack.

If he's that prone to heart attacks, no wonder he's not changed his show for years. The shock could kill him.

Top quality show delivered by Richard Allinson today sitting in for sicknote again.

Great music played, first class review of the morning papers and amusing details of the various petitions on the government web-site.

We salute you Richard Allinson.

Then he made a platform to let it carry on in every single show today. I think it was more of a early morning rant.

While I would say that his newspaper review was technically superior [ no stutters, erms, or rustling of papers were heard today], the content of the review was downmarket bordering dangerously on the trashy sometimes. While it may appear amusing to summarise the free give aways available in the papers instead of the news stories on the inside of the papers, the gag wore off pretty quickly. Also he seems to focus more on celeb trivia than on some of the more serious stories. Given that these stories seem to make up most of the "news" on the Radio 2 News bulletins anyway, this lead to more duplication.

Richard was entirely correct to comment on the extension of the congestion charge to the West of London from today in the Dawn Patrol Show. Funnily enough unless the Government have changed things Lonion is stil the capital of UK so not to cover the story would be bizzare in the extreme.

This story is very topical as there are a lot of people who are against this tax. I would also draw your attention to tonights London Evening Standard which has extensive coverage of this story.

Richard also only mentioned the Britney Spears hair story briefly in the review so to say his focus was more on celeb trivia is not correct.

His review was very well balanced and excellently done as one would expect from a professional presenter.

The paper review sounds sometimes like the blue rinse brigade against what anyone reports sometimes?

Well we wont agree but the congestion charge was done to death on Radio 2 today. In a way its not Allinson's fault as he was the first on the air. I would blame the repetition on the hosts later in the day.

BTW the LONDON Evening Standard is a LONDON local paper so I'm not sure what your point is re that.

But Steve Wright already reads the headlines from the evening papers on his show. Wouldn't that steal Dickies thunder? I'm sure there are some good surveys in the Grimsby Evening Post that he could pass on to us ... Rolling Eyes

Even the Grimsby Evening Post is less puerile and so much more interesting than,"what flavour crisps are you eating" Razz
