Following the success of the Sounds of the 60's and 70's Shows is it about time Radio 2 introduced a Sounds of the 80's Show.

Personally I think it is-I would like to see Richard Allinson hosting such a show-indeed where would such a show feature in the existing schedules.

Yes!
Inevitable really, and probably overdue. We'll be getting sounds of the nineties at the same time!

Keeps coming back to the same point - R1 for the teenagers and R2 for everyone else?

If someone was 20ish in 1995, and immersed in nineties music, they are now getting on for 40. what are they supposed to be listening to? 6Music is probably the answer, but there doesn't seem to be any deliberate policy.

Don't we already have one with the amount of 80s music that is already played across the station?

I think we will see something along those lines very soon hosted by Chris Moyles? Wink

I would favour having such a show provided it played some of the very good music from that decade not heard daily already Smile

Helen, you are quite right, Radio 2 seems obsessed with 80s music already!

However, I'd be in favour of a SOT80s providing it didn't play the usual bland rubbish that we hear daily (Queen, ELO, Madonna, Abba, Madness). How many more times do we have to hear Human League's Don't You Want Me? If such a show were to play music we don't hear so much, I'd listen to it. Although for me the late 60s / early 70s was the best era, there was some great music in the 80s.

Who to present? We need someone informative like Mark Lamarr, Mark Radcliffe or Start MaConie. Not the shallow Steve Wright.

I'd like an 80s show, and I guess Zoe Ball would be the obvious candidate for host.

How about just "Sounds" with various DJs over a 24hr period every day. Smile I think that might work. Let me write that down as a good idea for future consideration.

Very Happy

Yes, I like the idea of playing 'sounds' from every era every day Very Happy

That could exactly what they need to satisfy the diverse age range of the audience Very Happy

It's a good idea in principle but I don't think Richard Allinson would be first choice as he is just a stand in/last minute jock. Even Kielty got the depping gig for Wrighty instead of RA.

There was a lot of good music around in the 80s but it is overshadowed by the shite that gets rolled out on a regular basis.

Radcliffe or Maconie would be ideal hosts for such a show.....maybe playing unreleased tracks from albums of that era? ABCs Lexicon Of Love for instance was once a featured album on someone's show and the best three tracks that were offered were Poison Arrow, All Of My Heart and The Look of Love. Typical R2 safe songs.

Agreed. 'Date Stamp' was by far the best track from that album but because it was not a single it never gets played by the cretins who choose the music for daytime radio 2. Too obsessed with Queen, or 'Don't You Want Me' etc.

Couldn't agree more Schiz...

For those that have never had the privelige to own - or listen to - Lexicon Of Love, this is the aforementioned track...

These days, most album releases contain single releases and a few fillers when the artists/producers run out of ideas. Back then, every album track could have realistically made a dent on the singles charts.
