TV is not like it used to be, it's just too complicated now. Radio is easy, and Radio 2 is even easier. Just turn it on, leave it on, and listen. It works. No schedules, no complicated menus to navigate, no booking or alarm calls. Great music, great company, 24/7, apart from corrie and the mentalist on the telly, it's radio 2 all the way. There's lots of people like me out there, quite normal. Very Happy
It's like being on a really long train journey but instead of you having to change trains half a dozen times through the day, new drivers pop along to take over without you having to stop, get off, lugg all your bags across three platforms and then fight for a seat on another train.

If you look at Radio 1's figures (massive drop) then it's pretty obvious what is happening.

I'm still not sure what the overall plan is though..... R1 for teenagers (which is fine, I suppose) and R2 for everyone else?
To be fair to those running R2, that's a hell of a remit!

Although there are certain shows I avoid on Radio 2 in general Rach I think what you say is very true and it might go some way to explain the station's popularity

I have so many TV Channels available I actually find it stressful to find something to watch so I tend to stick to Sky Sports and News Channels Smile

I'm just the opposite, I used to leave it on all day but I don't anymore. I listen less and less now.

The thing is with radio - you can do other things while you're listening - washing, paperwork, hoovering up, making love if you're lucky enough to get the chance - with TV that simply does not apply because you have to devote your total concentration to whatever is going on in order to derive any enjoyment

You may remember I said this many months ago - people leave their radios on without necessarily choosing to listen to any particular show but some people took that as some kind of criticism of Mr Evans - that was not what I was intending to imply - radio is easy listening so we shouldn't put too much reliance on audience figures for any particular show Smile

That is so true Ruddles - I have often felt the same. Life seemed less stressful when we had fewer choices available.

Also, office chit chat was easier too, cos everyone watched the same programmes at the weekend.

Obviously Evans is enjoying himself and is have a free reign not like the others. I think Evans has picked up Moyles lost listeners where some of Wogans have gone over to Simon Bates at Smooth.

I'm with Helen and Angela. I used to have R2 on all the time but now it's Ken Bruce and a little bit of JV and that's it. SOTS, POTP and JW at the weekend. It's all gone a little bit tabloid for my taste

I don't think (from the beeb's point of view) it matters who people listen to on the BBC, if the BBC was Tesco, they wouldn't care if you bought red apples, green apples or tins of beans, they're just very pleased you didn't go to Asda or elsewhere. To continue the analogy, more people are in Tesco so the BBC are happy.

If I'm at home all day and the missus is out I either put on Radio 3 or Classic FM, or TV news channels or Sky Sports 5. Never Radio 2. R2 is now just for Friday nights and Sunday bits.

I don't honestly think it matters how many people are listening as long as the ones that do listen are enjoying it. I've long thought that these statistics are merely there to massage the ego of the recipient.

And aren't these figures based on surveys anyway? So probably more guesswork/assumption than fact.

Most of the stations in London and other capital cities who have their own local stations like Heart / Magic / Capital / Real / etc.. Smooth Breakfast & Drivetime probably blow Radio 2 off air.

I think Mark means that where there is a good local station in a city, then they get more liteners than R2 do in the same catchment area.
Radio 2 do do well because they have national coverage, if the listening figures for Magic etc were (sounding like a pundit on election night special) repeated nationally, then they would be the most popular station.

You could probably prove that to be true with statistics but only because you'd be mapping the results of a densely populated area across the entire country. City stations work because they're in the city. Was that a Jam track? But they have a specific target which is not there in the wider geography of listeners.
