The Six week summer school holiday could be a thing of the past. State Schools will be allowed to set their own holidays. Long holidays and more term times could mean kids are at school longer. This could stop those parents having to work around holidays to look after children. It could also cause a problem if you got kids going to separate schools. I think holiday companies should help and give cheaper deals during the summer break. If that happens they will find a loop hole.

I think this is a crazy suggestion. There was the head of one school on JV that had 7 school terms.......

Apart from anything else you wouldn't know when to go away to get a child free holiday! Wink

If this system actually happened the result would be that holidays would become more expensive in the current cheaper 'off peak' months - so there wouldn't be any financial advantage in families taking their annual holiday at times other than July or August

Rather than altering holidays I think that schools should have a longer day finishing at 4pm as used to happen in my younger days - and with shorter lunchtimes Smile

Agree about the finishing time, it was always 4 pm when we finished.

When I was at Grammar School (although my comments apply to all types of schools at that time) we used to have an 8.45am start with assembly for the first half hour and then eight subject periods of 45 minutes each with 45 minutes for lunch - some periods were doubles for core subjects like English and Maths

Many schools these days seem to work on hourly lesson periods and whilst this might be beneficial for the subjects which are covered I can't help thinking that inevitably fewer subjects can be covered within the current available time so children today are getting a far more narrow based education than was the case forty years ago

I think we need to get back to former practices especially bearing in mind that there are many newer subjects which now need to be covered such as IT and Business Studies so schools need to be open longer rather than less Confused
