Like to have lunch with? Not all together, just your top 3 choices and why?

I'll do mine. Imagine the entire R2 team stood there in a line and you're out the front like when you had to pick a netball or football team at school (I never got to do that out the front and pick a team thing but now is a chance for us all to do just that, with all the best players to chose from)

Ok here goes...no 1 on my lunch sheet is...

Vanessa because she'd know where to go, what to eat and we'd never be stuck for conversation. She is also a lot like me but also very different.

No 2. Sally Traffic for many of the same reasons, she has that London vibe, never stops moving. I know what she's thinking too,, if we saw an icecream van, it would take no more than a look and we'd be chomping our way through a double mint choc chip extravaganza.

No 3 Liza Tarbuck. I think Liza would be my at home lunch guest, I can see her sat on the peninsular in our kitchen, legs swinging, knocking back a tall cactus cooler (coconut juice with lime, lemon and crushed ice.) Putting the world right and laughing at my hubby being outsmarted by Hooby in the garden.

I've spent so much time trying to work out that tune I'll have to come back to this, cos a much more mundane lunchtime appointment is calling...

The more I think about this, the harder it gets to pick three of them.

Vanessa would probably eat me for lunch.

I would be in such awe of Johnnie Walker, Paul Gambaccini and Bob Harris, for their knowledge of music and the industry, that I would be struck dumb.

And for all their bonhomie on the radio, I have a feeling that the likes of Terry Wogan, Tony Blackburn and Alex Lester might be a bit hard going over the dinner table.

So that leaves.....

Desmond Carrington. That would mean going up to Scotland, of course, and I don't know exactly where in Perthshire he resides, but even if the Cairngorms can't be seen in the distance from his dining room window, the chance to explore his personal studio and collection of proper records and listen to his memories of the 50s, and earlier, would be well worth the journey.

Janice Long. Janice is the unsung hero of Radio 2, and the only one of the weekday daily presenters whose show can be listened to in the dark all the year round. She seems to be so down to earth and non-showbiz and I'm sure we could talk about anything.

Last but not least Liza. I've had a soft spot for Liza ever since the early days of her acting career on television. A wicked sense of humour without being cruel, and similarly down to earth. She once said she would rather walk the dog than go to a celebrity junket, and we have plenty of fields and footpaths nearby to exercise the beast and stop at a village pub for lunch. I think she might like something alcoholic in her cactus cooler though.

Ken Bruce - Just because he seems so nice.
Tony Blackburn - Again seems nice but must have loads of good stories to tell.
Fran Godfrey or Deadly Alancoat - They both seem like really fun people.

Janice as said above because she is down to earth and loves a lot of the same bands as me

Huey Mogan because he is one cool dude who knows his music

Bob Harris just because i would talk and bore him with 70's rock music

A mention must go out to Alex Lester but i don't think i could be seen out with a bloke in sandels

Thought provoking!
Actually, there are plenty I would like to dine with, particularly the 'legends' like Sir Terry, JW, Tony B, Sir Kenneth of Bruce, etc.
But also, I can imagine Graham Norton being great company.
I can think of quite a few, some already mentioned above, that I wouldn't necessarily opt for.

Definitely Ken Bruce - I'd ask him how he puts up with playing the dreadful music beloved of the dreaded Mr Bones Sad

Perhaps Johnnie Walker as I'd love to ask him about all the very dodgy stuff he almost certainly left out of the autobiography - probably for legal reasons Smile

And definitely Sally Bozeman - I'd just love to ask her out for a date as she just does it for me and I think she is single as far as I know Very Happy

What's interesting is, from the way I think about things and people anyway, and perhaps it's perfectly normal and the way things should be but, the comments like, they'd have interesting stories to tell, and I'd ask them the truth about what might not have been in a book etc or they'd know loads about music and radio type things. That's all work to them. If you were having lunch with me and opened up with , so Rach, you've been in the defence industry for nearly 30 years, you must know a thing or two. Tell me about the flapping hinge bearings on the EH101.... erm ... they need oiling once a fortnight..... If it were me, I wouldn't ask about their work at all if possible. They have a very visible(if that's a good definition of radio) end product, so to me, asking a question about their work is a bit like saying, I've not really been paying attention all these years. A sort of entertain me type thing. No. I'd want to talk about anything and everything they do outside of work. But , that's just me.

That's why I discounted the likes of Johnnie Walker, Bob Harris - they must be tired of answering questions, stoopid or not, about life on board the pirate ships, or in the back of the OGWT shed, and I don't share the fascination with motor bikes.

I have in my time run across three local radio presenters, of longevity in the business, happy personalities well-loved by the audience, and they were all mean, miserable old gits in real life. (No, they didn't include Simon Mayo or Dale Winton). So for that reason I also discounted TW, KB and AL, just in case I would end up disappointed.

I picked the three people I thought I might be able to eat, chat and relax best with.

I think everyone is different to their public persona, what must be difficult and energy draining is having to be " on " all the time. I quite like to do nothing in particular and it's nice to have someone to do nothing in particular with.

I don't think that real music buffs like Johnnie Walker Gambo or Stuart Maconie would have any problem discussing such issues over lunch as they clearly eat live and breathe the subject - rather like me and probably others on here

On the other hand presenters who have shows on Radio 2 but who have little knowledge about or interest in the music they play probably would prefer to avoid 'talking shop' in favour of discussing other things Smile

I still think your lunch guest choices would soon get bored talking about work, or they'd be the very polite DJ at lunch, not the person and you'd leave thinking - cool beans, he's just like he is on the radio.

Sorry Rach - couldn't put up with your list - 3 women - they'd spend half the time telling me I'm not holding the cutlery properly and the other half telling me what I should be thinking - I'd rather die twice painfully. I'd settle for Ken Bruce, Johnny Walker and the decapitated corpse of Jonathan Ross.................. I would have a 3rd (live) guest of Janice Long however.

1. Bobbie Pryor, mainly because she works weekends like me

2. Rebecca Pike, because I just love the sound of her voice

3. Nigel Ogden, because I just love hearing his show as I finish my weekly shift, and still curse radio2 for cutting his program in half.

And seeing as how he won't be taking up any space because he has sadly passed away Hubert Gregg
