I like the trail. Good to have Ken and Chris involved - makes Radio 2 seem more like a family, and hopefully gets people to listen to some of the music on the edges rather than whatever Gary Bones insists on.

I've just heard the trail for the first time on Tim Rice's programme and liked it. (Shows how little I listen to Radio 2 apart from mostly Friday and Sunday evenings Smile )

Like me, I've not heard it yet. Everyone's gone to bed, just me here with David Jacobs Smile

Ha, he's playing Lady Gaga with Tony Bennett, hey she did OK!

It's great having David back on Sunday nights. A lovely way to finish the weekend Smile.

On Wednesday I'm off to Eastbourne to see him on stage presenting a big band matinee as he did last year. I am so pleased that he has recovered well enough from his operation(s) to do this gig as there had been some doubt earlier in the year.

I love that recording, as I do the duet he did with Amy Winehouse.

I heard him mention it last night Eileen and wondered if that was the concert that you were going to. Hope you enjoy it!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon, the band and singers were great, David was in good form with some funny stories to tell and the huge audience was enthusiastic!

I booked to see David and the Len Phillips Big Band at Eastbourne again this year but unfortunately he is not doing it after all. I was sorry to hear that news but hope that he is well.

Gary Williams (a very likeable and good singer whom I've seen before) will appear as planned but the show will be re-vamped as a Frank and Ella tribute which should be good as Clare Teal will co-star.

I shall miss David, though Sad.

Oh that's a shame Eileen. I heard part of David's show this past Sunday and he sounded okay.

Sounds like it will be a good show anyway.

Ah, Gary Williams is a FNIMN regular - I saw him at a Doctor Who concert and he's good. It may just be that David Jacobs is unable to do much travelling.

Oh that's very sad news Ian.

I listened last night and enjoyed it however it was a repeat that was originally aired September 23rd 2012 and the last 2 have also been repeats.

Yes but it's sort of the end of an era isn't it Raver? Sad Funnily I was trying to recall when his daily lunchtime show was on while I was listening last night.

H

It's just been announced on the 2 o'clock news as well.

It is, Helen. I was actually going to say, it's an end of an era. The cruelty of time spares nobody, I guess, apart from Mickey Mouse.

It's really sad news, though understandable. I love David's shows and have been keeping them to play them in the car. He last presented it back in June, since then we've had repeats.
I suspect whatever replaces it won't feature the same type of music and of course nobody has the breadth of knowledge and has met as many of the stars that he plays each week as Mr Jacobs.

Sad news. I didn't realise he was ill. He'll say goodbye instead of hello.

I bet they get a celebrity name in to host a specialist show?

Thanks Ian.

I thought it was the late 80s, as I worked shifts and used to hear it several days a week depending on my roster.

Thank you Andy, that was lovely to hear.

I am so sorry to hear this announcement. David has been part of my life since the first broadcasts of Journey Into Space. After that I always listened to Cyril Stapleton's Show Band Show on Saturdays just because David did the announcing - and I also developed my love of big band music at that time.

I remember queuing up for ages at the Earls Court Radio Show, which many stars attended, just to get his autograph.

His Sunday night programme presented in his gentle, and gentlemanly, style is an ideal way to finish the weekend as "his" kind of music is also mine.

I look forward to any specials he might present.

PS to Mark: I sincerely hope you are wrong about Radio 2 getting in a "celebrity" to host a replacement show.

A very nice tribute to David in Paul donovan's S Times column in the Culture section if anyone is interested.

David's last show will be recorded tomorrow from his home in Sussex. Sadly he is not well enough to come to the studio. Paul also says he has doubts about future programmes from him which is very sad news.

I wish I'd recorded a few more of his shows, I have a few but not enough really.

Actually, Helen, it was more than good, it was a fantastic show. Gary Williams was excellent but Clare Teal was magnificent. What a singer! And the band which is one of the best big bands currently playing was just outstanding.

I doubt there's many here interested, but David Jacobs has just made a documentary about Jon Pertwee for the new Doctor Who Blu-Ray of Spearhead from Space. The two used to get up to all sorts of stuff when they were starting out in showbiz!

I'd be interested Ian. I watched Dr Who until Jon Pertwee left and didn't bother much more after that.

I didn't realise you'd already been Eileen, glad you enjoyed it despite David's absence. Agree Clare Teal is a great singer. She was superb on the wonderful Hooray For Hollywood prom with John Wilson, the best of all of his Proms IMHO.

So it looks like we're getting Don Black, at least for the short-term.

Oh that should be okay, I enjoyed him when he covered Elaine Paige last year (?). I think he was on Steve Wright the other day I wonder if anything was mentioned?

H

Edit:- Just checked SW page it was Jul 22, so too late to listen back.

Nice tribute Steve Wright paid to David on his Sunday Love Show today. Sad to see him go, but his shows will still live on as I'm sure their is recording floating around somewhere.

Thanks Mark, I must listen to that. I never had the foresight to record David's shows, though I think some on here did, so I hope the BBC has archived a good number of them for our future listening pleasure.

Just shows how well respected David is amongst the rest of the R2 presenters. Paul O'Grady has just said how much he will miss him as he listens as he does his ironing!

I can remember in the very early days of Jeremy Vine's show when David used to pop in right at the end of J's show one day a week and give an observation on something that was happening that day. It was clear Jeremy loved to see him and he used to say David had come in to 'polish his records' for his show, when he was obviously doing a pre-record! That studio (in the old studios) did have a turntable which David may well have used to play some vinyl.

H

PS Michael Ball has just said the same. The ratings will be colossal for tonight's show.

When he first joined Radio 2, Chris Evans was full of praise for David and told a lovely anecdote on air. I expect tomorrow's Breakfast show (if Chris is doing it) will have a mention.

I'm listening now to David, as I don't have to get up early tomorrow. I have to say that he really doesn't sound well. So, I suspect, he has made a good decision in giving up broadcasting. I'll agree that it is, none the less, very sad. I have grown up with David Jacobs. I have vague memories of him being on Juke Box Jury as a child. I wish him all the best for the future.

Nearly every link on Janice's show has been full of praise for David, and quite rightly so. I've been listening to David since the days of his Saturday morning show (about 1978) when he introduced me to the music of Sinatra, Vic Damone, Keeley Smith, Peggy Lee and so on. So I ended up buying not only the latest pop singles but albums such as Ella Fitzgerald's Greatest Hits.
