Whilst Graham Norton is off Chris Evans bought Carfest North today live on Radio 2. Does the bloke need to shout that much on the Radio or has he got a hearing problem. It's not as if the audience was on the other side of the field. Most were standing right next to him.

For the first time in many years I actually did NOT retune my radio after SOTS today and listened to the Carfest event and actually enjoyed it

To me this is the type of thing which Chris Evans excels at and it's a real shame that Bob Shennan insists on inflicting him on us at 6.30 in the morning when his energies could be far better employed in doing what he does best - outside broadcasts like today's

I'd really like to see someone like Richard Allinson or Sara Cox taking over the breakfast show for a couple of months every summer so that CE could be redeployed presenting something like the old Radio One Roadshow in the summer months - with the weather we've had this summer I'm sure it would be a winner with both the parents and their kids and if I was Controller I'd be on to it like a shot

Getting back to Carfest I actually went to see a new client on Thursday who ran a pub in the village of Little Budworth and apparently his pub is the closest one to Oulton Park where today's gig took place

I arrived there never having been before at what appeared to be a very run down pub - in fact it resembled a building site and I thought to myself - Oh dear yet another good local has bitten the dust

On approaching the door I was greeted by the sound of a multitude of hammers and drills going and eventually having been unable to make myself heard above the noise I went inside and tapped this bloke on the shoulder and identified myself and asked whether my potential client was there and what was going on

The very helpful chap told me that the pub was being refurbished and was due to reopen tonight (Saturday) but apparently on Wednesday evening about 500 thirsty people from the Carfest site turned up wanting drinks and food so the owner had decided that the launch would have to be brought forward to Thursday night - I stepped back in amazement as on Thursday lunchtime there was no beer no beer pumps no tables or chairs and what appeared to be some very dodgy electrics Shocked

Needless to say the owner apologised profusely as he hadn't got the time to see me but the good news is that he's invited me back there next Thursday for a three course meal with all the trimmings - I just hope it isn't too hot to be eating T Bone steak at lunchtime Smile

Your radio has a volume knob, and quite probably an on\off button, failing that you have fingers.

The digital desk when he's in the studio can be adjusted to his voice apparently. You can notice it. He's not the only DJ it's been done too. Anyway he's been rammed down the listeners throat until people have got used to him. That's what I believe.

The level of any sound can be adjusted in a zillion different ways. Up down, fat, deep thin high, low etc etc. The traditional entry point for sound into the brain is the ear; by throat is a whole new concept that, even with my limited knowlege of anatomy, I can confidently predict little success. A radio is for listening to, not for eating.

Please Rach - just let's keep off the subject of the current R2 Breakfast Show

This thread is about Carfest which was a live broadcast where you expect a fair amount of shouting in order to add to the atmosphere and for me as I've already said it's absolutely fine

Shouting at people from a broadcasting studio at 6.30am is an entirely different matter

I disagree with Mark as most presenters have to shout during live broadcasts with massive audiences - I've even done it myself although the biggest crowd I've ever entertained is about 700 - certainly nowhere near the 20000 present on Saturday

Shouting can be absolutely fine in the right environment but not in every environment - after all the famous Emperor Rosko made a whole career of it - the best shouter in history Smile

He wasn't shouting at 20000 but the millions on the radio, it was annoying as you can't be expected to turn your radio up for music and down for the DJ.

I agree better than shouting at us between 06:30 & 09:30 but still too LOUD

You have to have some shouting at live events like Carfest though Nod

If you think back to the days of the R1 Roadshow most of the presenters used to shout including Steve Wright DLT Johnnie Walker and many others

It's just par for the course in a live event situation where many of the audience are far more loud than they might be normally being fired up by the likes of alcohol and even worse things

That is exactly why Chris Evans is fine for such events - everyone has strengths and weaknesses and whilst he has many weaknesses his shouty style works well for live broadcasts though not on early morning radio

If we have to have him on the network all I'm saying is use him in a role which he suits his style best which in my view is definitely live outside broadcasts Smile
