Book of the Week on Radio 4

Kerry Shale reads extracts from this first ever full-length biography of Nilsson, in which author Alyn Shipton traces Nilsson's life from his Brooklyn childhood to his Los Angeles adolescence, and charts his gradual move into the spotlight as a talented songwriter. With interviews from Nilsson's friends, family and associates, and material drawn from an unfinished draft autobiography Nilsson was writing prior to his death, Shipton probes beneath the enigma and the paradox to discover the real Harry Nilsson, and reveals one of the most creative talents in 20th century popular music.

I think his rotten upbringing had a lot to do with that ... Sad

I heard the first episode by chance when I was having a long lie-in on Monday after a disturbed night when Radio 4 was all I could bear to listen to. I found it very interesting, heard yesterday's and forgot today's so I must catch up.

I enjoyed this Book of the Week even though, for the most part, it was a sad listen.

I chanced across this on Monday night, and of course, fell asleep after a couple of minutes. But have listened to them all. Such a sad tale.

Harry was a wonderfully talented man. I'm a huge fan. So are the lovely people who run this site. All things Harry can be found here....unfortunately, now you have to have a blogger account, whatever that is. It's been a while since I visited...

This one looks promising though...

I have a wonderful LP recorded in 1973 in which he sang several standards backed by a full orchestra. It is quite beautiful and is called "A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night".

That is a lovely, lazy sounding album,Eileen....one to drift away to on a Summer's afternoon in the garden or to finish the day with.

A friend, very kindly, did a copy of it and gave it to me.

I've played it again after listening to Harry's story.

I would never have known about it but a year or two ago I was recommended to get a copy by a friend who was involved with the recording. Glad I did as it's a lovely LP.
