Yesterday JV played the wonderful Abraham Martin And John by Marvin Gaye. He then admitted that he didn't know until this week that the song was about Messrs Lincoln, King and Kennedy (and Bobby).
I found this staggering. OK, he was only about four when the song was a hit, but surely he, as a broadcaster and journalist, should have known this.

Or is it me just being churlish and overcritical?

I'm a couple of years younger than him and though I never knew for sure (until now) I assumed that was who it was about.

Perhaps Jezza is a bit simple Laughing

I'm not surprised by this at all, one can hear many examples of radio and TV people who don't seem to have a clue about music, history or the real world in practical terms! Jeremy once said he's never heard "Good Day Sunshine" by the Beatles Rolling Eyes
On TV recently, a report on older, potentially dangerous tyres had the female presenter saying "If an older tyre with say 100,000 miles on it... "
Would anybody really think a tyre would do anything like 100k miles?
I've asked before on here if anybody remembered it, but there was a single released back in the late 60s or early 70s of "Abraham Martin And John" with actual news audio clips of the "I had a dream" speech, JFK speaking and his brother remembering his brother shortly after his death.
I always had a big lump in my throat as his speech was very emotional.
I can't remember who recorded it but it was played on Radio 1..

He said he did not relate the song to Martin Luther or the Kennedy's. It shows that all he does is scripted and researched for him. He can be caught out on many facts that make him look a dork.

I was surprised as well that he said he hadn't known the meaning of the song.

If I recall it wasn't played that much when it was originally released, or maybe I didn't listen to the right station.

I get the impression not a lot of research is done for some things on the show

Well I managed to find my mystery track from all those years ago and it turns out to be " Tom Clay..What The World Needs Now (Abraham,Martin and John) "
I still find it emotional and if anybody can listen to Bobby talking about his late brother without a tear in their eye they're stronger person than me..

You might remember it too?

Surely they shouldn't need to do research for something so obvious and well known

If I were JV I'd be so embarassed about being ignorant over such a basic point I would have kept my mouth shut on the subject Rolling Eyes
