Anyone listening?

Lovely music, a surprise to me and it's live.

Has O'Grady left for good now? The trailers seem to suggest Goodman is permanent.

No it's only until October Ian, I think Len said October 6th.

On Paul's show last week his wording made it appear that it was his producer who was really taking the break and I'm sure I heard Paul say he was 'going nowhere'.

A thought struck me though is that Don Black is also covering until October. Is it part of changes to come?

Yes, I've noticed Malcolm Prince appears to be on quite a long holiday (he also produces Graham Norton's show but didn't go on holiday until after Ryan Turbidy had settled in).

Hmm. And Russell Davies leaves then too. This sort of thing is always ominous, isn't it?

I listened to Len's show too, and was also pleasantly surprised.
It's a strange thing, being able to present radio: some can do it quite naturally, and some just can't manufacture the ability (particularly TV people) for some reason.
Len is apparently one who just can.

I'm partial to a little Paulo Gradi of a Sunday. Len should get the later gig. His radio series have all been worth a listen. I hope R2 carry on the tradition of 40's and 50's music, to end the weekend. But knowing the way it's going, it'll be Scouting For Girls, or something equally inane. I despair when I see what the station has become. A bot of Popmaster and a little Simon Mayo on the side are all I have on in the week...sometimes a little Steve Wright, now that Danny Baker's no longer on Radio London 94.9.

Otherwise, it's all Listen Again. Like this...my weekly fix of Dave Cash. Or at least, the first hour, when it's 99% certain to be a sixties chart.

Similar here, Ken when I remember to switch it on, it used to be on from 6am but not any more, then a bit of Drivetime if in the car. I still enjoy the evening stuff between 7pm and 8-30 and then after 10. SOTS on a saturday, sometimes some of TOTPs until I've heard enough of Tony B Rolling Eyes . Then Lisa Tarbuck. Sunday afternoons with EP. JW and PO'G.

I'd like to get a Breakfast show, the Friday Arts show , Saturday 3 till 6 and weekdays 8-30pm until 10pm back to a listenable state Very Happy

Paul is coming back with a tea time chat show for ITV. I guess he's taking a holiday then record the shows over 3 days which will be on for 5 days a week.

I thought Len's show was absolutely superb.
Isn't it great when people show a great love for music and have little stories to go with the choice of songs.
The music was exactly the sort of stuff Radio 2 should be playing, a great mixture of stuff and not the same stuff which is constantly played during the week.
See Rachel, you can have a great mix of music which is not aimed solely at the younger demographic without becoming a "museum".
Also love Paul O'Grady, wish we could have both along with their producers during the week, PLEASE!!!!!

That's exactly right , Gazmando, and what I've been saying for years, get rid of the dull repetitive specialist shows and replace them with shows like Len's show, which had an interesting vibrant mix of old and more recent music. Show's become museum like when they play track after track from the same dull period in pre history. The best exposure for old music is to play it during a show that young people are happy to listen to.

Totally agree with you Rachel, it's so much easier to introduce people to different types of music when it's mixed in with stuff you know.
The only trouble is, is that as you get with the shows on daytime now, all the older types of music will get gradually squeezed out until they're non existent.

I'm all for introducing more music into shows particularly daytime but leave the specialists shows alone. They play music we are not going to hear elsewhere.

We'll just have to agree to disagree, Nod. I think the specialist shows limit the audience and limit the exposure to the kind of music they play. Evenually no one will listen to the specialist shows because the listeners will all have fallen off their perch. Instead of specialist shows we should have music from all eras being played 24/7 across all shows: listeners whom would never dream of tuning into a specialist show , will hear stuff from the past and think ... cool beans, I like that.. and behold... New Fans of old music! Old music isn't just for old people, they don't own it.
My niece aged 14 .... I put on an ELO CD the other day...she loved it so much, she downloaded it onto her phone thing.... can you imagine being 14 and never having heard ELO? I think she is now their biggest fan. Surprisingly she didn't like CCR, and said about them ... Oh not the Beatles:- everyone plays them.... so my niece has now been educated in 60s, 70s and 80s music ( she was here on holiday).

I agree there should be more variety during all shows in the day. The specialist shows only take up 2.5 hrs per day, and I don't believe they are only for old folks, the other shows take up many more hours. No commercial stations offer the specialists shows and that's what the BBC should be doing. Rolling Eyes

It all keeps coming around to the increasingly unrealistic remit for Radio 2 (R1 for teenagers, R2 for every other age-group).
At some point, perhaps, 6 Music could possibly take on some of the specialist shows (the clue being, as they say, in the title)? I don't know what the take-up is now for digital radio, but I can't see any huge reason why a blues/folk/jazz/etc show (or even a 'Sounds of the Eighties') would be out of place on 6?
Discuss.

I like that idea, Uncle B. Specialist shows on 6 would be good. There's always going to be those who will say. Why should I have to buy a DAB just to listen to the shows I like? Soon enough , everyone will need a DAB to listen to 2, so once that happens there can be no argument. Even more so, since all the BBC Radio Studios are pretty much in the same place, they even borrow each other's studios ( seats and mic covers!) The idea that there are separate BBC radio stations is long gone. If you look at BBC Radio as a whole and look at the programming as a whole, then all bases are covered , apart from those 17th centuary sea shanties I mentioned in an earlier post somewhere else (probably): so you can listen to whatever you like at the touch of a button. The remit thing is dead. It's prehistoric and left completely fossilised by the further evoloution of the digital revolution. Imagine, if you will, just for a moment, that the Beeb got rid of radio stations- completely, shock horror, get thee behind me Satan, and just put out radio shows, and instead of tunning into a station , you just pick the programme you want from a menu, ( lots of concurrent programming of course to choose from as there is now) you could even program your programmes into your DAB so you can listen all day to just the programmes you like....... It's coming. Embrace the change, it will make your life better. Smile

The idea that Radio 2 should play all music genres mixed together 24/7 is a no-goer. Fans of Sinatra, Bowlly, west end musicals, Hollywood musicals, trad jazz, and light music just would not listen in for 'their tracks' if they were always interspersed with Spice Girls, Status Quo, Human League and Elvis Costello.

6music should be for new music developments, while Radio 1 is for teens? I really don't know what Radio 1 is now, nor what Radio 1 Extra is supposed to be.

There's BBC4 Extra which broadcasts vintage comedy like ITMA (WWII and after) so it's a shame there isn't a BBC Radio 2 Extra for 'vintage' music, from the Light Programme and before WWII, when it was the national station or whatever.

They sort of do it already, John. It's just they do that as well as the specialist shows. A big change in BBC radio broadcasting is coming and it will be better. No stations, just BBC Radio and a menu of programmes. No more arguments about what sort of music should be on which station. No more internal competition for ratings, just a selection of great programming 24/7 with +1s on all programmes too. You'll have a menu driven system, in a time grid with something like ten 'listen now' choices at any one time, although, evenings and weekends some of those programmes will be repeats. All the existing BBC Radio Shows will be avaliable as they are now but under a single banner of BBC Radio. A better service at a much reduced cost. It's win win for everyone. (Well almost everyone- it will require fewer managers)

It's closely linked to the end of FM, Rudds, so 2015-17, and will require us all to buy a new radio, although dab radios will still work, sort of, they don't have the user interface required to enjoy the new system as it's envisaged. For an increasing number of listeners though, an updated ap on their mobile device will give them everything from day one. And yes you can filter out anyone you like, each programme is a positive choice by the listener. You will effectively,be able to set up your own 'station' and fill it with the programmes you want .

Thanks for posting about this programme,Helen..... I enjoyed it!

I liked that he didn't play an obvious (well not to me) Chas and Dave and also liked he played a Bing Crosby I hadn't heard before ...in fact I rather liked the whole two hours. Paul has made this slot his own but I agree with Raver that Len would be a nice fit following on from him.

Len spoke of a frail old lady (Etta James)coming on stage in a wheelchair on Dancing With The Stars to sing At Last so I had to seek footage of it out on Youtube...........the voice wasn't what it was but I thought she looked good, not quite the frail old lady that Len spoke of... Smile

I didn't hear the programme but the playlist looks pretty good. I like him as a presenter and very much enjoyed his TV series about the Titanic.

I hope Radio 2 hangs on to him as he seems knowledgeable about the sort of music I like. I would like to know what is going to happen when Russell Davies's great show on Sunday evenings ends. Russell was an ideal successor to Benny Green and I wonder if Len could be the next to take up the baton?

Shame that tonight was the last of Len Goodman's shows. I only heard the first and the last but they were both good. I hope they have him back when Paul next takes a break.

I hope Radio 2 find a permanent slot in their schedules for Len in the future.

Amongst many songs he played, that I love, I was really pleased to hear Joyce Grenfell's Stately As A Galleon written by Joyce herself...that was a real treat

Fool's Paradise was my earworm for days after hearing this programme!

That Joyce Grenfell song takes me back to my childhood and remember hearing it coming from a new fangled portable radio that my Mum had!

Hope they get Len Back on the air soon.

I thought Len "done good". Much as I like Paul O'Grady as a radio presenter, Len Goodman's choices and comments were different and interesting and reminded me a bit of Alan Titchmarsh's version of "Melodies for You" (without the light classical).

It was nice to hear some comedy records again.

Yes I enjoyed his choices, and those when he was on a couple of months ago. I'm guessing his producer is different and maybe Len has a bit more input.

The Melodies for You mix is sadly missing from the schedules now.

It sure is.

I like a bit of classic, light classic and operetta music (having performed in a few over the years).

And I'm still in my 50s - so not completely an official "old codger" yet.
