I still occasionally try to dip back into the JV show, just in case my previous assessments were a little hasty or unfair, or in case they were actually spot on but things have improved....
Yesterday I listened, with some incredulity, to a particularly incisive show with the theme of 'accidents that people have had whilst going for a wee in the night'.
Sigh.
One man phoned in to relate on air that once when he was young he had jumped over a wall and not realised that it was quite a way down on the other side. He hurt his leg a bit.
I was gripped.

Maybe I'll try again in another month or two.

Today's story about the cockerel biting off a diamond earring is as bad. Slow news day I suspect.

Could have done with 45 minutes on David Jacobs I'm sure the majority of his listeners would have agreed.

Yes I agree Helen - I think that the DJ sad story because of his longstanding connections with R2 should have been longer than the usual half hour

They have done it before on rare occasions such as when Lady Thatcher died

On JV's show today:

JV: 'you've been in IT for 31 years! My goodness, that's, er, let me see now, er, 1987'.

One despairs.

The show could be better if they spent more time on less topics and had more depth, less hype and sensationalism, did more research and JV stopped thinking up things to try an encourage arguments.

I never listen to this show but have just iPlayered the Tuesday section about David Jacobs. What terrific tributes from listeners and colleagues alike.

He really does seem to have been a lovely chap. I read somewhere that when he had finished appearing in the first series of Journey Into Space, he was so well-liked by the actors and the studio staff that his contributions were expanded by writer Charles Chilton for the next series.

Friday JV

He was talking about strange questions that are asked at an job interview.

One girl was asked to do the lotus position as she followed Yoga.

Another guy was asked if he had 'passed a motion' before attending interview

I could go on but won't. Has anyone had a strange question at a job interview?

As my grandmother would say 'what is the world coming too?'

It was a lovely tribute Eileen and thanks for a reminder that I must record that part onto a cassette for my Mum to hear. She missed it and was a big fan of David.

Well we've all heard of 'lavatory humour' - this must be the journalistic equivalent - the Editor of The Sun will be jealous Smile

It will be a shock to the system when I record it Eileen as I've not used one for ages. You soon get out of the habit. I'll record it to the computer first!

Not so much a strange question but I once went to a job where I had to do one of those psychometric tests.
The questions were ridiculous, e.g what type of biscuit would you like to be? what kind of animal are you? along with would you rather be.
A. An Airline pilot
B. A Dustman
C. A Ballerina
D. A Brain surgeon

It went on like this for 5 pages, there must have been 40-50 questions in all.
I was actually offered me the job but I didn't take it, they asked why and I replied in all honesty that is was because of this test which I found patronising and totally irrelevant to the job I had applied for.

Today during the pre show chat with Ken the topic of tasers was discussed.
Vine asked "do they shoot amps or volts?" followed by "I wonder if the Ohms land on you"

Oh dear.

Ah yes! That blind guy was tasered outside my theatre while we were rehearsing the Panto inside. From what I hear, he might have got compensation if he didn't keep banging on about it (and, for a blind guy, he's remarkably good at spotting pennies left on the street).

Most interesting topic on today's show has to be Voyager 1. And the one I can't help but think 'Why bother?'. Were you unfortunate enough to have your neighbour's pet croak whilst looking after it for them.

A neighbour/good friend asked me to look after their budgie whilst they were away on holiday ..I said 'yes, of course I would' and then she went on to say I wasn't to worry if he died whilst in my care. The thought had never crossed my mind before she said it ....Shocked ..glad to say that Giggsy (they're United supporters) survived his stay at my house...I was relieved to see to see the back of him though. Very Happy

I'm pleased that 'Giggsy' didn't fall off his perch while in your care. Whilst I can appreciate how worried & upset folk would get if a neighbours pet does die in their care, and how difficult it can be to tell the pet's owner the bad news. I really don't want to sound uncaring. But that topic did seem as though it was put there as they had run out of ideas, important stuff to discuss.

I agree it's a fairly silly subject for a show of the kind JV hosts but I really did laugh when the woman caller mentioned about looking after her friend's sick cat which sadly died and her husband storing the body in the brand new freezer he'd just bought for the purpose of storing roadkill - and JV enquiring whether they had eaten the cat - to which the caller rather indignantly responded 'No we tend to stick to venison: Laughing

Thank heavens for that
Shocked

That reminds me of when I looked after a neighbour's hamster and was warned that it was "rather old, so don't worry if it dies!" Well, it did die and its owners weren't due back for about 3 weeks so I wrapped it up and put it in the freezer. In size and shape it closely resembled a chicken breast so I was glad to hand it back to them.

Due to work commitments, I rarely listened to R2 daytime when Jimmy Young did the lunchtime slot, but looking back on it I think the standard of his long-running show was much, much higher than is the JY version. It has sunk to unimaginable tabloid depths, and I don't think JV really knows what he's doing. It's awful.

The thread title "Despair" is most appropriate!

JV was quite good back in his Newsnight days, I'm sure he's a nice enough chap but his show is so predictable and boring.
I like it when Paddy Connell (or is it O Connell) sits in, he seems much more measured and tends not to interrupt guests in mid sentence.

Yes, I agree. In fact, I usually only listen between 12.00 and 2.00pm when JV isn't presenting. I end up swearing at him after about 20 mins. He doesn't strike me as being as intelligent as he'd like us to think he is - especially when you compare him to the regular presenters of Radio 4's "Today" programme or "The World At One".

They are totally different as is the world we live in now to what it was when Jimmy Young left, let alone from what it was when he started!

JV's show is a shadow of its former self but I think it's in part due to the 'tabloid' life we live today. Even the politics are dumbed down because Europe decides so many of our laws, but that's another debate altogether!

That said I listen most days to parts, out of habit I suppose, there is less that interests or affects me these days. Sometimes I'm surprised by something that I'd not have thought about though.

It's a matter of opinion. That's why I maintain that, all things considered, Jimmy Young's show was better. The atmosphere was more relaxed and he was a much better communicator, especially with people who needed putting at their ease. In that respect, Vine is hopeless and is obsessed with pushing one person out of the way in readiness for the next, only to then cut that person off when he's bored with them in order to squeeze in yet another boring track from one of his favourite artists.

That's why I don't often listen. And I'm not mad, even if my wife claims that I am.

That's a very good point, most things these days are so dumbed down it makes many things almost unwatchable/unlistenable.
One Tv example being Mastermind, recent specialist subject - The Muppets. Rolling Eyes

Despairing of Jeremy Vine is one thing but I found some of his comments on today's show utterly offensive. He kept on referring to bank workers as 'muppets' (in relation to the stupid woman in Lichfield who dishonestly spent the money mistakenly sent to her account). He also referred to another occupation (can't remember which) as muppets.

I think the only muppetry on today's show was Vine asking whether pollution in Japan was caused by Saharan dust!!

Vine, you're a MUPPET.

On the other hand, I did like the way he almost went into Spinal Tap mode when asking the bloke how Chinese pollution is worse than ours when ours is at the highest level, 10.

I am beginning to feel that JV has lost the plot. When he is interviewing these days his voice gets quicker and quicker. He starts pushing people and shouts (a bit OTT) in my opinion. I get the feeling he is hoping for a scoope but he is making himself sound a right dip stick

Well just look back to his show a few days ago - the topic being whether animals are racist Rolling Eyes

Give me strength - I seriously had to think whether it was a late April Fool joke

If this is the level the show has reached then perhaps it's time to call it a day Sad

Hi Hedgehog nice to see you!

I do wonder if they have lost it, but as far as topics go and I've said it before, the papers (most of them anyway) are just as bad and that is where a lot of their stories come from.

I don't know what anyone on here thinks about the demolition of buildings as part of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, but I was horrified to hear him say he thought it would be fun! Don't get me wrong I do think it's amazing how they demolish high rise buildings and would watch it on TV news if shown, but as a source of entertainment - no thank you! Maybe I'm getting old!

You and me too, Helen. I thought the whole plan was rather bizarre, I have to say. Funnily enough, I recall seeing the tops of those towers on landing at Glasgow airport - I always wondered if they were in the best place!!!

I'm glad the plan to include the demolition in the opening ceremony has been dropped.

Whilst I agree that it isn't something I would have suggested I can't see how anyone can justify making this subject the topic of a national radio show

The tower blocks concerned are empty and an eyesore and are going to be blown up anyway so quite frankly I couldn't give a toss whether they do it during the opening ceremony or at any other time

Just get rid of them Mad

Actually whilst I didn't like JV's idea of 'fun', I thought it okay to include it on the show, it was news and the bit I heard had some reasonable comments.
