Long Term unemployed could have to report to job centres and earn their benefits by doing unpaid community work. This type of work was introduced in the states under Clinton, but never really worked. I wonder if the Job Centres will have to open at the weekends to cope with the pressure? Also those unemployed will require a CRB check.

What a patronising load of nonsense from Eton-boy Osborne. Yet again he (and his colleagues) are scapegoating the many people who out of work for perfectly legitimate reasons and who are already doing all they can to get back to a position where they're self-sufficient - and he knows full well that such announcements will make headlines in the Daily Mail, Express and the many media outlets owned by The Murdoch Mafia.

Nice one Georgie Boy.

UKIP? The party of the disaffected, righter-than-right-wing Tories who have but two policies? Hmmmm.

Ah Colin you missed a very good opportunity there Smile

I thought you would have said that UKIP has roughly similar policies to the present Government on benefits - note that word as I hate the Americanism 'welfare' - and you would be right

However the big difference is that UKIP would get out of the rip off fiasco commonly known as the EU and following this proper border controls would be brought back so all the jobs presently taken by foreign migrant workers would become available to British workers in which case there would be far more justification for bringing in serious incentives for jobless people to find work

It simply isn't fair on them to do it in present market conditions but if Britain actually gets back to being a sovereign country then that's an entirely different story Smile

" Ahead of his address, Mr Osborne insisted on Sky News that the policy was not a return to the Conservative "nasty party" of old - describing the move as "compassionate".

"This is not about punishment, this is about help," he stressed, but also said: "What we are saying is there is no option of doing nothing any more.

"We are saying we are going to help you into work but we are going to ask for something in return. I think it is a very compassionate approach to people who previous governments just ignored."

Laughing

I thought David Cameron was the PR man
