Bought a Dell PC couple of years ago with Windows 7 Professional. This was so that when I replaced my old laptop I would network the new laptop with the PC, which would be useful for my business, save faffing around with memory sticks etc.

Yeah OK, it's 2 years later, but I have eventually now purchased a new Dell laptop, and with same Windows 7 Prof. After the set up I've looked at the options for networking and my best option seems to be to use the Homegroup system. The set-up is so easy......

Yeah well, I started the Homegroup on the PC, and in the network screens the two PC/laptop can see each other. On the laptop screen it says 'Homegroup available' yet at the password screen it won't let me join, 'Homegroup has encountered a problem'.

I've tried the Troubleshooting tool, goggled other possibilities, checked various settings and 'turn on' things, but still can't join the Homegroup. I have a service contract with Dell so that may be the next option for Help, but maybe someone in the forum here has advice?

John

John, I'm not the best person to advise on this because I've junked all but one of my Windows PCs in favour of Apple MacOS and iOS devices. However, I did have the need to hook a Windows 7 PC into my office network recently and despite the facts that Microsoft this to be something that "you can do in 30 seconds, literally" it proved to be anything but.

What I did was to follow the steps on the this page and then one or two of those that link from it:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows7/start-here-to-set-up-a-home-network-in-windows-7

Obviously, we're still in a different ball-park to you because the network is predominantly Apple (in which it's a helluva lot easier to get devices talking to each other more easily, of course) but I think you may be OK with this.

One thing to consider is any Firewall that may block connections and also any intervention from anti-virus applications.

XP users will have to be on the ball soon because Microsoft is pulling all further support, which will potentially leave machines wide open to hacks.

Forgot to update on this thread, I got a 'Windows 7 Explained' booklet and went through the Networking procedure and IT WORKS! I can now back up everything from PC to laptop wireless easy-peasy Very Happy

I will of course still have additional back-ups on my Phillips hard drive and a few sticks...... Rolling Eyes

.... when I get around to it...... Rolling Eyes
