Oh Lord Kietly is covering breakfast week 21st October. What is happening at Radio 2. He's boring.

It also keeps him out of my earshot since I'm not normally listening at that time of day anyhow.

Maybe now Radio 2 doesn't have to try too hard in view of the closest competition, Smooth having cocked up completely with the Simon Bates Breakfast show. I t now sounds voice tracked and devoid of any personality....

It probably is voice-tracked. Many commercial radio stations now are. It's what I call "drag & drop" server-based programming.

BTW - who is Patrick Kietly?

I've had the unfortunate experience of meeting him and I can assure everyone that the TV Producer is absolutely correct Sad Sad

Yes, I have a friend who has been a freelance TV cameraman for many years and can also confirm the observation!

Patrick is quite good: very dry, like a week-old fairy-cake, he can be very self-depricating too.

I find him very bland and boring, but then again I don't mind him depping on breakfast because I don't listen anyhow!

Patrick did quite well in spite of the production team leaving him hanging a couple of times.
Interesting music choices this morning too:

Mathews Southern Comfort-Woodstock, George McCrae - Rock Your Baby to name two but checkout out the playlist...way off the usual beat. A couple of regulars on there but in the main, good stuff.

Yeah, apparently he's a knob in real life and his marriage is a sham - but he's OK on the radio!

The Tracks Of My Years is always the best part of the show.
It doesn't matter who the presenter is, the music is always completely naff because of the cretin of a 'producer' Gary Bones who is obsessed with The Pet Shop Boys and that awful song that ends 'I'll kick your arse in', both of which were played yet again today. Tedious predictable drivel. The sooner they get rid of him the better.

Listened to Patrick this morning, as Smooth is awful since the change over at the beginning of the month.

I agree Helen that Smooth has deteriorated but it's still a lot better than the R2 alternative - can't really understand why any network would want to change a successful formula in circumstances where its main opposition is so irritating to such a large number of people Confused

Ermm, I don't wish to be too pedantic, but aren't these both about Ken Bruce's show. And no, Ken Bruce shouldn't be got rid of, as a presenter, he's good, IMO.

I miss a bit more chit chat that is now missing from Smooth and I actually enjoy Patrick Kielty so will listen to him this week.

I think and sincerely hope Schiz was talking about Gary Bones Smile

Ruddles, you are right, I was of course referring to Bones, not dear old Ken.

I dipped in and out of Smooth last week on DAB and I got the distinct impression that the presenters are there merely to fill the short gaps of predetermined lengths in the computer-based schedule by saying little more than "that was.. and this is". They have seemingly zero involvement in the selection of music (which is picked by machine from as few as 30 tracks, it would seem) and the whole thing is awful.

Listeners would be better off simply creating their own playlist in iTunes or Spotify and do away with the presenter altogether!

I had a dip into PK show. Know wonder they get the most annoying person to cover, the last thing the station wants is someone who knows what they're doing which makes Evans look bad..

No, they want somebody who's even more annoying than Evans to make Evans look bearable (even if that's not actually possible)! Smile

I try not to listen to intently to PK as he's a bit of a tit really especially with his constant references to The Tweet Machine and the way he keeps reminding us that "the producer is looking at him through the glass"....it's radio Patrick...we don't really care.

One thing that did make me wonder though. Pause For Thought.

Hasn't PK based his entire stand up routine on:

a) The IRA, and:
b) Catholic Priests and paedophilia.....surely an uncomfortable moment there?!

It's not why I listen to radio Colin. I want and need some conversation interspersed with the music, especially first thing. I'm a bit choosy about who does the talking though. Wink

That's the same for me, Helen. Trouble is, some presenters are a waste of the space that their voices occupy and in such instances it's better to do away with them altogether!

David Baddiel was an interesting interviewee this morning, saying stuff I wanted to hear. What a pity Kielty kept cutting him off before the payoffs to the jokes and stories!
