Whilst we have to assume innocence at this stage it would be rather embarrassing for Mr Shennan if anything comes of it having recently been flogging to death the fact that Gambo is marking forty years at the BBC this year Smile

Interesting comments Gambo made regarding Saville recently.

He'll be off air for the time being.

I hope he's innocent for the simple reason that the music he plays on Saturday evenings on Radio 2 is hugely enjoyable, challenging, original, varied, informative.....just bloody good, and certainly a welcome change from the uninspiring bland drivel that the station plays Mon-Fri 9 to 5.

Just hearing that he won't be on air while the investigation is ongoing.

Like you Schiz, I think he's bloody good and there aren't many left who are.

I agree Schiz - it would be real shame if we were to lose one of the few remaining quality shows on the network Sad

I hope he is proved to be innocent, a great broadcaster.
Remember he has not been charged with anything yet (though some on Twitter already think he's guilty ) Rolling Eyes

Those are the twits who need to be shot a dawn.

Correct. Hes not been charged just arrested and answered all questions then later bailed. Normal procedure whilst the police follow up the interview.

Normal procedure would be too not present the show or appear anywhere until such time.

Normal procedure should be for him and lots of others like DLT to go on presenting their shows unless and until they are convicted of any crime Rolling Eyes

Indeed, but I do recall you wanted Chris Jefferies hung after his arrest when it turned out all he was guilty of was a bad haircut.

While I do hope he is innocent, I can't say I'm surprised - I mean, the career of Wes Butters (for instance) raises all sorts of questions, and he did seem to bring undue attention to himself with all his holier-than-thou comments on Savile and the like. It just seems a little like he was asking to be investigated.

From The Independent...

Joanna Yeates' 'eccentric' landlord Christopher Jefferies to be focus of new ITV drama.

The drama will tell the story Christopher Jefferies, played by Jason Watkins
Based on the story of retired teacher Christopher Jefferies, The Lost Honour will tell the tale of “a very British kind of hero”, Oscar-nominated writer Peter Morgan has said.
Morgan, who penned The Queen and Frost/Nixon, explained the intention behind the two-part show.
“No one will ever forget the man with the eccentric hair who became so connected with the murder of Joanna Yeates,” he said. “I want to make sure that no one forgets the same man who was acquitted, and who fought back to clear his name.”

Quite a horrid experience for Mr Jefferies back in 2010, I remember them arresting him and taking his car away for forensics (a massive crane was brought in to lift it onto a truck, all very dramatic).

I recall, though , that he had appeared very odd in the newsreels not just his appearance but also he unfortunately spoke to reporters and didn't choose his words well. I think he said to them or to police that he saw three people leave the girl's flat and nobody seemed to believe that. Not a good idea to talk to reporters on your doorstep.

He did seem, shall we say, a bit unusual but to be fair put on the spot like that who knows how any of us might react. remember he had no media training or anything like that.
I think he fitted the profile the papers love, a bit strange looking, bit of a loner, not confident in front of the cameras, a little 'shifty' etc.

Definitely a case of guilty until proved innocent with Mr Jefferies, not an experience anyone should go through. A similar thing happened with Matthew Kelly.

Well I know both Neil and Christine Hamilton

quite well and one of Christine's favourite saying is 'It's not a crime to be naive'

Never a truer word spoken in my view and that certainly applies in the case of Mr Jeffries

The whole thing stems from the fact that the corrupt British media has far too much power and influence on our society in 2013 and people need to become far more questionning about what is sold to them as a 'so called' true story Rolling Eyes

The problem is that it has always been thus. People seem to prefer having their thoughts and opinions shaped by others. I was talking to somebody the other day who quoting a story about "benefit scroungers" in the Daily Express, and he also cited a documentary (I use the word loosely) on exactly same subject in the same week on Channel 5, both of which seemed to shape his perceptions.

I asked if he was aware that both the Express and Channel 5 were both owned by porn-king Richard Desmond who was making money by speeading misinformation and attempting to infuence his readers and viewers to adopt his own narrow views. The guy I spoke didn't know - and didn'tseem to care. What's worse is that he continue to quote what he'd read and seen as if it were fact.

What amazes me is that people who claim the news media proprietors to be biased and corrupt still hand over cash in return for their product!

It's too late to change it. As George Orwell wrote in 1984, "Ignorance Is Strength". It sure is - for some.

What a waste of money.and all the stress he's been put through.

He might not return to Radio 2 as he took himself off air not suspended.

These accusers are now in their mid-forties. Why can't they be named and shamed for having put Paul G through all this?

Time was that police would not arrest unless 3 criteria had been met -
1) There was valid evidence that an offence had been committed
2) There was valid evidence that the person to be arrested was guilty of the offence
3) There was a power of arrest for the offence

It seems these criteria had not been met.
Perhaps Police should return to the old protocols - they have been digging around for a year on the basis of an unsubstantiated malicious allegation.
How about investigating the allegation and then arrest the perpetrator if there is sufficient evidence.

Thanks Helen. I pop by on a regular basis, but as I usually only listen to R2 now at weekends (excluding Anneke, O'Dreary, Tarbuck and Richard Madeley) I don't have much to contribute. Smile

Great to see that he is coming back but the fact is that in the absence of any charges let alone conviction he never should have been taken off air in the first place Rolling Eyes

And if I were in his position would I want to return to a network which had failed to show any confidence in my innocence? - I don't think so Evil or Very Mad

And what a disgrace that the CPS, having decided there was no evidence on which to proceed, should then divulge that the "victim"(their word) was an "underage boy". Why not destroy the man ........... Mad

5 years on....

Paul Gambaccini secures CPS payout over unfounded abuse claims

Radio DJ Paul Gambaccini has won damages from prosecutors over unfounded allegations of historical sex offences.

The presenter, 69, was arrested in 2013 over a claim he sexually assaulted two teenage boys in the early 1980s.

Mr Gambaccini always denied the claims, calling the case "completely fictitious". He spent a year on bail before the case was dropped.

The amount paid to Mr Gambaccini by the Crown Prosecution Service has not been disclosed due to confidentiality.

But the CPS confirmed: "We have reached an agreement without admission of liability".

There was no greater defender of the BBC than me," he told the paper, (The Daily Mail) "but they never tried to make it up to me after I was cleared".

Mr Gambaccini said he now had "no relationship" with the BBC other than turning up to host his Radio 2 show.

I think so, and if he had Legal Aid the state will pay much of the whole legal costs because it was an incorrect prosecution.

Dunno but although he wrote a book about seeking them out he wasn't allowed to name them or give clues. If he did he may go to prison!
