Well I'll agree there is better music played on his show that's for sure but he and his co presenters still make my skin crawl.. I hate the constant references as to what his wealth and possessions allow him to do whilst some of his listeners are struggling to pay the bills! and Moira - I love anything you say Chris, gurgle laugh Stuart, has me reaching for the off button!
Can you imagine proper presenters like Blackburn or Walker bragging about their personal fortunes?
and, I STILL don't know anybody who likes him!!!

Plus - why does he have to sit SO close to Alex on the One Show???

Funny thing though.... I've always loved Ernie Bilko! and unfortunately for me, Bilko reminds me slightly of Chris Evans! Laughing

Yes, Evans does sit a bit obscenely close to poor Alex Jones who always looks a bit uncomfortable when he's with her, though she's probably more concerned about the ginger idiot interrupting not only her but the guests as well.

Mind you, he's not the only lech on The One Show. That Brummie dimwit Adrian Chiles spent all his time leering at poor Christine Bleakely. Thank God the Beeb got rid of him.

Ernie Bilko! Oh Santa, how I love Bilko. The finest TV sitcom ever made in my opinion. I'd never made the visual connection with Phil Silvers' brilliantly-portrayed character but now I see exactly what you mean! How funny.

By the way, the "geeky" look was intentional in Bilko, so you shouldn't feel guilty in making such a comparison.

Schiz, I agree. I was unfortunate to have to suffer Evans on The Show at somebody's house a few weeks ago and I got exactly the same impression. The on-screen relationship between Jones and Baker very good but with Evans as co-host Alex Jones really looks uncomfortable. I know people at BBC Wales in Cardiff who have worked with her who say that when pushed she's very capable of speaking her mind; somehow I can't see their off-camera relationship being that friendly. On the night I saw his irritating performance she often looked ill at ease.

His "me, me, me - look at me" attitude is what I dislike most about him. Creep!

Ah yes! I do remember. I was bought one DVD set last Christmas. My Dad and I watched several in one go while my mum and my wife went shopping in Plymouth. Fabulous! (The DVDs, that is. Dunno 'bout the shopping!)

After a little research, I'm flattered that you think I might be either of the two posters you imply. You're way off the mark, an entire generation in fact. If either of those two were still active here , they would have shut you down faster than whispering, "her ladyship's soap".

Nice to see the debate continuing, it's almost on topic, page two already and we've hardly started. Just one more sleep to go until the Chris Evans Breakfast show!

Bilko, I had to google that. Laughing very funny.

Lets rephrase this : Chris Evans is Number One National Breakfast Show, he's not Number One Locally in some areas.

I don't think Chris is a bad person xanadu, I understand you worships the ground he walks on. Whatever floats your boat.

Well you can always break things down into smaller and smaller areas and change the result.

I don't worship the ground Chris Evans walks on, he's a really good Breakfast Show presenter, in fact this very morning was a classic example of why. Wet socks and News pods- and that was all before 7am. Oh and not forgetting Always Look on the Bright Side, the fear, the panic that it may not have been the radio version was palpable. Smile

Life: it's your charter, your party. Listen to what you like. This would be the busiest forum in the world, if every time someone posted about a show then everyone who didn't listen to it, posted a message to tell us that. Perhaps I should start letting everyone know which shows I don't listen to. Is that how this place works? Here's an idea - we could start a thread , lots of threads, in fact, on things we don't do. It would be like Clapham Junction. Busy busy busy. I've never been there though.

I heard something about his shoes and socks were off and Radio 2 didn't have a smell like some of his past Radio Stations he worked in. Rolling Eyes

Talking The One Show ( which l find very boring now) and Strictly Come Dancing.

I always find he's trying to impress too many people. I think Ken trys to ignore him, but unfortunately that 9.30am junction isn't as interesting when Terry was there and probably could be scrapped.

Why is there a need for a Chris Evans debate anyway? It's not as if he's a big story in the papers.

Apparently it's by "popular demand" Mark but they don't seem to have shown up yet. I wonder who they are Laughing. Perhaps this thread has become a bit too political for them.

The irony is that they're still popular (or at least their work is). Their work will still be loved and appreciated long after Evans has hit the dust!

Anyway..... I await the "by popular demand" debate. Where's Mrs. Merton when you need her?

It's not for me to name names, Mark but at least two people on other threads asked for this debate (and they have contributed to it), if you add me that makes three which is a significant proportion of the active posting members here. Even taking out all the pointless spam generated by the, my mum would call them prawns but I wouldn't ( prawns are better than that) it's the most responed too, most looked at thread in recent days. So perhaps that answers your question. Chris Evans is apparently big news, on here.

I asked my mum about the various people on here, how she laughed, she was very surprised that one member in particular hadn't been banned by now or at least self destructed in a fit of frustration at being wrong all the time. She's told me not to reply to posts from that member any more, so I won't. For those interested, she'll be home soon.

Whilst acknowledging the contributions to this thread so far, it's barely reached the level of a debate about a debate.
Those that like him, listen, those that don't, avoid him as best they can. No room or need for debate

At last...... somebody has ackowledged what I was trying (perhaps unsuccessfully, I concede) to hint at in the second post of the thread.

Thank you!

(I should add that the thread was created merely as an exercise in provocation and disruption, of course.)

I don't agree.. there was and still is plenty of room for debate as to why Chris Evans was allowed back on board Radio 2 in the first place let alone the breakfast show with such a contrasting style to the previous presenter.

I agree with the point already made that most listeners would listen to paint drying at that time of the day so I don't believe it's his personality winning through.

Plus, where should all the displaced 50/60/70 year olds commute to if they don't want to hear his childish rantings? The immoveable BBC hasn't acknowledged that fact and provided a Radio 2 extra where decent music and presenters could please them.. after all, isn't the older generation in the majority in most respects?

It goes without saying, SOTS, POTP and Steve Wright's Golden Oldies are the best bits of the week.

So, in my opinion, the old debate is still alive and kicking... Razz

I agree with all of your points, Santa, but in essence I think that such a "debate" has no relevance because it will change nothing. The best solution is to simply ignore the broadcasts altogether and be done with it. Unfortunately, the alternatives are non-existent here in the UK right now, given the dire state of over-air popular music radio broadcasting.

Thankfully, other "delivery platforms" are becoming more important.

Such is life.

There's plenty of mileage and fun to be had in a subjective exchange of views over the merits of Evans as a broadcaster, but let's not kid ourselves that it's a debate where there are hearts and minds to be won.

If I'm told that the only spread available at breakfast is marmite then I can scream and shout as much as I like, but ultimately my only choice is to eat it or find another place to eat breakfast. No amount of telling me that marmite is lovely is going to make me like it. and while enough people are prepared to eat it then it will remain the only spread on offer.

Following this through to a somewhat inevitable, but ridiculous, conclusion I now eat my marmalade elsewhere!

I think we're done.

There are plenty of decent alternatives available elsewhere these days which is why I now rarely post about Mr Evans

If people want to listen to that kind of c--p then so be it - as long as I have a decent alternative available every day I really couldn't care less Smile

Although I think that there are pitifully few (if any) decent alternatives to R2 at breakfast - due largely to the way that radio has been allowed to be ruined by corporate ownership groups and utterly useless regulators (eg: OfCom), I do agree that there's little point in whinging about something that isn't going to change anytime soon so "let 'em eat cake" is my attitude.

I also think that the originator of the thread knew that this was the case but did so merely to antagonise and provoke.

I reckon that my proposed option "Who gives a toss?" was probably the sensible choice in the context. My mornings have been Evans-free for a long time now and if other people find his consistently-irritating style entertaining then I'm genuinely happy for them!

I don't "bang on about it" at all. I'm responding to a thread topic (rather than commenting on the antics of a specific broadcaster) and in doing so am merely pointing out the fact that what will be will be so what's the point of a stupid "debate" about a topic that has been done to death?

Does it matter? those who happen to think the Beeb was and is wrong to continue to pay such a ridiculous fee to Mr Evans, let alone the question of his suitability for the station, are not going to change their minds are they?
So the debate still exists.
Even more of a debate for me would be the need to provide an additional station more suitable for people who can't abide listening to post 1990 Radio 1 presenters.
