Earlier today I popped round to an elderly customer's bungalow, which is situated in a sheltered housing scheme, to drop a job off. When I entered, I could hear music playing on a cassette player. It immediately made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck - reminding me of the dreaded Sunday evenings and the fact that it would soon be bath time and then preparations for school the next morning!
(And a reminder that I still hadn't done my homework!)
What was it that gave me such nightmarish flashbacks? The opening bars of "Sing Something Simple" which used to follow Fluff Freeman's Pick Of The Pops on Sunday evenings.
I was polite, however. "Blimey, I haven't heard this for yolks" I said. The old boy and his wife smiled: "We used to love that there programme on the radio. Don't know why they don't put them on like that any more.".
I smiled, politely! Aaaaaarrrrggghh!!
Here's the question: whose singers were they? It was Cliff somebody wasn't it? |

Ah Cliff Adams. Much as I enjoyed much of the 'light' music that R2 Sundays used to offer I too could not bear the sound of his singers.

Odd that there is a wiki page for the Singers but not one for Cliff, so a bio of Cliff has to be read on the Singers' page. _________________ -

Interesting that Dick James was part of the origin having worked with Cliff and the Stargazers. Dick James went on to first publish Beatles songs and then sold Northern Songs without consulting Lennon and McCartney. _________________ -

He did indeed. Lew Grade was involved in or somehow linked to that enterprise (Dick James Music) as well, wasn't he? I know that McCartney was furious at the sale of the catalogue to Michael Jackson, who was himself only acting on McCartney's advice to "buy up music rights" as a solid investment. |

Ah, something we can all agree on! I too disliked Sing Something Simple from a young age. Always sounded a little creepy to me.

Nope, still Sony. Paul got some of the EMI stuff back, I think. |

Strangely enough I always rather liked the Cliff Adams Singers but I do remember thinking what bad scheduling it was to have that show following the great Alan 'Fluff' Freeman whose show was truly groundbreaking - though of course he hadn't adopted the 'Fluff' moniker in those early days _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Yeah, as Colin said, it always reminded one that tomorrow was Monday!
(But then for me, before Monday, I could at least relax again to Melodies For You and Your Hundred Best Tunes )
I don't have such a problem now for two reasons, I don't listen to R2 on Sundays (not much anyway) and I don't work Mondays _________________ -

I quite enjoyed Sing Something Simple, it was pleasant and harmless, though I only listened to it because. as others have said, it followed POTP.
The theme tune certainly was evocative of the weekend finishing and soon it would be Monday... A bit like Songs Of Praise or Countryfile. |

I like Countryfile (as does my 30 year-old son, he told me recently). I must be getting old! (as is my son?) |

Me too - it's worth watching just for the weekly weather forecast alone which in my view is the best one available _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Countryfile is a good programme, it's useful and informative. It's one of those programmes which make me realise that we should actually pay MORE in licence fees to the BBC (I certainly would be more than willing) to ensure good quality broadcasting which we don't get from the likes of ITV and Channel 5. |

If only the BBC hating Tory led coalition would allow a license rise! |

I agree. However, there are many people who favour handing broadcasting over to the Murdochs who won't! |

Just caught-up on this thread...
In our household it was known as 'Sing something for a Simpleton'.
Memories. |

It's funny how they seem to hate the BBC when several of their former people are in it. I read somewhere that one of their leading political correspondents, Nick Robinson was once a 'Young Conservative' leader. I'm sure there are others. Any more offers? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Well of course Chris Patten used to be a high flyer in the Tory Party in the early nineties _________________ Are you ready for a Ruddles? |

Ah, but Lord Patten is chairman of the BBC Trust and is not part of the BBC as such. |

Me too John. I always had a penchant for a lot of the music of previous generations but the opening bars of SSS meant instant headache for me. I don't know what is was about it but I always switched it off asap. |

Watching a documentary on Kim Philby this week, it turns out that Sing Something Simple, was one of the programmes he listened to mostly, while residing in Moscow.
I expect that in Russian, it'd be Sing Something Simples.
